Thanks for the nomination, High Eight.

When you put it like that...I'll put my best actor face on for when I don't win. :)
In reality, when the stories are this good, just getting mentioned is a boost to the ego.

I feel that way, too. A mention or shortlisting is as good as a vote.

Congratulations, and well-deserved, HareBrain!

You're not going to go the Kipling-style route are you? ;)

Congratulations to the one, the only HAREBRAIN!!

Parson crawls back into a ball and wonders what deviltry the hairy one is about to faust on us expecting and unworthy peons of pen.

Congratulations, HareBrain, on a great win!

Thanks to all the great mentions and long & short listings from Perpetual Man, Phyrebrat, alchemist, stormcrow, David Evil Overlord, ratsy, Lenny, chrispenycate, Ursa major, and HareBrain.

And an extra special thanks for the votes from springs & TheDustyZebra!!!

Hello,

Now I'm back from Egypt (just in time, if the Foreign Office advice is anything to go by…!) I can catch up here; posting my 300 worder via iPad was not a nice experience – especially with a glacier-slow wifi connection.

So, I wanted to thank:-

Johnnyjet, Stormcrow, Lenny, TDZ, EricWard , Ursa Major and
Starbeast for the mentions; Eric, you have flattered me twice this month and to be accused of channelling Poe is a massive (if unworthy) compliment. Thank you :D

This was a difficult month. I knew my entry was weak and have realised since that the openness of the challenge probably worked against my need for boundaries.

I needed to introduce the obscured ‘control room’ sign before writing it with the blanks (C__n_l R__m). I just couldn’t find a way round it, and now think I should have put the blanks line in brackets to suggest the internal thoughts of detainee 44.

Anyway, at the risk of looking me-me-me-ish ;)here are my other two entries which I did not post as they just seemed too pedestrian.

Anuthabritelight

Ed and Jaye, sloppy shouldered at midnight stood at the bus stop on the corner of Epping Forest. Stoned. Like, totally.

Ed pointed. “See them?”
“Yeah, the Pleiades.”
“One, two, three, four…eight.”
“Since when was there an Eighth Sister?”
“Okay, you count them, then.”

She also counted eight. “One’s getting bigger.”

Blue lights beckoned and soon they were caught within them. Travelling without moving.

The Seven Sisters sang to them, and carried them onwards.

The Honeymoon

I can’t remember when the Ad Astra’s garland of lights vanished over the horizon.

My shirt floats nearby, refusing to sink. The buttons glint like miniature pearl moons.

Unlike my shirt I am leaden and I may sink soon. One thing heavier than my heart is pulling me down; Gold, round, 24 karats. You never got to wear it but I won’t let it go.

Yesterday was filled with excitement. I wish you’d turned up.
