Discussion thread -- 75 WORD WRITING CHALLENGE January 2013

It need not be dystopian, Parson. What cyberpunk refers to is, essentially, a world with both magic and advanced technology. It cuts very close to science fantasy, but I believe the difference between the two tends to be the races of cyberpunk are more in tune with traditional fantasy.

My slight dip into cyber punk "Neromancer" and a couple other of William Gibson's books did seem to be dystopian.

Read "The Artificial Kid" by Bruce Sterling, Parson. It takes place on the planet Reverie, with a utopian society alongside the dystopia of the Decriminalized Zone. So, a little of both. Plus, Gardner Dozois credits Bruce Sterling with starting the cyberpunk sub-genre with this book.

 so i hit wordcount about a third of the way through sketching down my idea. and its nearly 300. *woe-begotten sigh* I may have to summerize it after I finish writing it just to have a chance at making the word count.

Or if it has something to do with a boat, a beach, or whatever you get from the picture on the other thread, then you already have your 300 word story. :D

I think my aim this month is to come in below the word count before I start editing. I always feel the quality suffers when I'm trying to pack a bit too much into such a small space.

A core idea and fewer sentences with more natural flow

As for the subject/theme, I really like both! Though my first instinct was to write an erotic piece, it's probably not suitable for the format nor audience!

Just to confirm -- it's perfectly acceptable for members to amend stories, correct mistakes, add titles or anything else as long as it's done within the standard time allowed for editing ie one hour.** After that hour no more amendments can be made, but that's when the editing window shuts, so no one but a mod can make any amendments after that time anyway. Therefore the only people who can fall foul of the time limit and be disqualified are the mods themselves -- so there's no need for anyone else to worry!

** we're pretty sure it's one hour, but it's best not to leave it to the last minute!

A new year, time for a new start, so Happy New Year everyone, and off we go again.

Karn – with higher technology, those things that we might not understand, it is always easy to be suspicious, but there is also a temptation, to be the first, or to just use it because it sounds so cool and exciting. What I liked here was the fact that temptation could not be resisted, but what happens next is up to the reader.

Hex – A gripping look at the negative side of technology, someone using it to make a make a woman your girlfriend though subversive technology. The result is probably terrifying, something akin to rape, literally forcing someone to love another against their will. Fortunately it seems that our protagonist has the strength of character to break free. The chumpo that did it probably needs more than a message on a table though!

BigJ – Another great story that looks at the negative side of progressive technology, especially when applied to human biology. When we look at the world now where people pay to have their attributes enhanced or improved it is easy to see them using technological breakthroughs for the same. Of course there is a cost, and perhaps that is something that they would start to reach out for in the end.

Reiver – Avery powerful story that looks backward instead of forward, where everything has been made available reading a book might be more trouble than it is worth. But then there are always some things that slip through the cracks. It was fun to imagine how people might view the idea of reading a book, but the book itself is something else. Would it actually change the way people think about their world, or would it just be eventually adapted into electronic format?

Bowler1 – Great title! A future where even aging can be combated with high-tech. But it seems that to do so brings a cost. From a death bed to a new life may seem impossible, but ultimately it can happen. However here we are presented with a different perspective, are there those who would bend the rules to make sure everyone gets the chance, no matter what the cost.

Well, I've posted my first entry in a while. I finally managed to get my confidence issues sort-of under control, and found a little inspiration, too, and decided to give it a try. It's a great theme, and I really enjoyed writing to fit the challenge again.

There are some great entries already!

Nice one Talysia, and that is why I prefer the printed book :)

Talysia -- in my book you are officially a contender. Scary, but possible scenario.

Whoa, the challenge is off and running, nearly one page filled with tales of Cyberpunk with "changes". I dare not look at the other entries until I can think of something.

I've got plenty of time to think..........hmmm.....
