Discussion thread -- 75 WORD WRITING CHALLENGE February 2013

They are a bit creepy, it's true, but I think I would like that box of chocolates. It would save all the time I spend staring at the chocolates, wondering if this one has the yucky fruit cream stuff inside or if it might be a caramel or a coconut instead. :D

Thanks for the review, perp. I'm just sorry it was so troublesome for you to dissect. You nailed it, though. :)

Ah not troublesome because it was hard, I think I had it, but due to its nature I wanted to get to the bottom and enjoy it in its entirety.

And I did

RJM – A beautiful and yet sad story that examines the downside to a long life, one that it seems cannot be stopped to easily. An android that outlasts its creators, with no real direction other than to live, but the ending is of hope and light, of possibility, a solid reminder that nothing is forever, and that a light can come to even the darkest of times ...

Aw, gee.
Thanks Perp :)

TSP- Another excellent story that examines the wonder and advancement of technology until it begins to blur at the edges. When does artificial life raise itself to the next level? When it can create life on its own, in a matter that can only be described as natural . But what really makes this stand out is the feeling of excitement that emanates off the page as the beings bask in the pregnancy.

Parson – There is always the fear that as we advance more; technology becoming more and more miraculous, that we lose more than we are willing to admit to or even realise. There is a place for science, but there is also a place for faith. Sometime books, even those whose message is forgotten or ridiculed can bring something more. In a soulless society they can bring back heart, give life.

Hex – There is something incredibly tragic in this story, almost as though this attempt to create life is not so much a wonder as a cruelty inflicted upon a helpless creation. A being forced into life against its will. Sometimes the quest to advance science at all costs can blind the scientist to the ills he inflicts, a tunnel vision for the end rather the means. This really catches the torment of the creation, and in so few also the obsession of the creator.

Glen – A great riff on the Trainspotting promo wording. But here the words take us into out future, a world that seems all too possible, a society slowly being absorbed by the games they play, by the luxuries that make life easier, slowly becoming little more than zombies. If this is the future for life why choose it? But inevitably it seems we will.

Juliana – There is a certain feeling to this one that manages to incorporate so many different interpretations of the word life, from a strange life form that has been unwittingly captured; to the free life given back to it; to the liberator choosing something that will make their life more difficult, but probably improve their spiritual one; and the captor so intent on making his name and cementing is life’s reputation that he is at risk of becoming a cold, driven thing, living but barely alive.

Perp - A 70 word review of a 75 word story. I think you should get into the Bible Commentary business. You know, 365 pages of commentary on 3 pages of Biblical text. :p:D

Anyway, as usual, you got it in one. Thanks for the review.

My pleasure Parson, not to sure about Bible commentary, I might get more carried away than normal - and who knows where I would end up.

(Well technically the Book of Revelation would be where I end up...)

You know what would be cool? The book of Job, rewritten in first person from Job's perspective. Imagine the inner turmoil of that tortured soul...could be a bestseller...

Ratsy, You thought of it. You go for it.:):D

Ratsy, You thought of it. You go for it.:):D

I don't think I have the knowledge nor skill to pull that off but it does have me kind of intrigued. Maybe another thread would be a good spot for this discussion but I am imagining a whole series of books, first person of Biblical Characters. Showing the humanity behind them and the struggles they went through mentally.

Hey Abraham you must sacrifice your son...."Issac come here a moment, just lie down on this stone slab!"

There could be a really interesting feel to this. How did this make Abraham feel and so on.

Judas...Soloman...lots of cool stories could be made.

You heard it here first ;)

SB – Alien abduction, a place where humans are in luxury and comfort. I loved the way the new arrival was swayed so easily, and then there was chocolate. They’d have had me with that.

Thank you for a tremendous review Perpetual Man. I missed it the first time, I glanced over "SB", silly me.

Monsterchic - Whoa, talk about a virus attack. Gritty and mean was your tale, you captured the aggressiveness of those little nasty bugs. extremely well.

David Evil Overlord - Great battles are fought in a grim future by mighty warriors of cybernetics, covered in human skin. Creepy and nightmarishly cool world you have created.

Thanks Starbeast :) The story turned out WAY different than planned, but I was pretty pleased with the outcome
