Let's form a crackpot theory together

Maybe for the purposes of our search in this book we should look for someone who has newly arrived to the narrative after a certain point?

I think this criteria should be used when we are looking for a specific FM (Jaqen H'ghar for instance), but not if we are looking for a big shocker of a character who has been around forever on a long undercover assignment.

I'm late to this thread...

Potential FM already undercover... Ser Shadrich, the Mad Mouse. Mayhaps he is who he says... but maybe he's working for Illyrio. If he does find Sansa, he can switch guises and escape with her.

And a recently deceased character ready to be impersonated, I suggest... Ser Kevan Lannister.

Varys murdered him in secrecy. If Varys is a FM or has access to FM, Kevan could be impersonated.

Kevan's death most benefits Aegon.

If Kevan is impersonated, then he can continue to undermine the Lannisters and their alliances. And then pull the rug out from under Mace when it will do the most harm. Kevan is one person who has total access to Tommen. He can also easily gain admittance to see Cersei... and Jaime and Myrcella if they ever go back to KL. Kevan would even be entrusted with a high command in the defense of the realm... a position from which he could easily allow Aegon to win a victory.

Conversely, they Tyrells stand to also gain from Kevan's death. Sure, Kevan invited them to take the reins of the government, but eliminating him means that it will be nigh impossible for the Lannisters to exert any control or protection over Tommen. So, if Olenna, Mace, Margaery, and Loras are still supporting the Targaryens (i.e. hoping to marry Margaery to Aegon or either Willas or Loras to Dany), then they can easily present the returning dynasty with a fait accompli. Impersonating Kevan until the time is ripe just keeps the Lannisters off balance that much longer.

But if Varys is acting on his own without thought of Aegon, then he can continue to keep the realm rudderless by impersonating Kevan. Mayhaps Varys and Baelish are in this together.

Along these lines, I think that a possible face for Arya to assume in order to kill Cersei is Tyrek Lannister. He's the son of Tygett, another of Tywin's brothers. He and his cousin, Lancel, were squires to King Robert. He disappeared during the riot after Myrcella's send off. If he were to return, he'd be close to either Cersei in Casterly Rock or to Tommen in KL... or maybe close to Ser Daven... or he might be sent to serve Jaime, if he ever returns. Impersonating Tyrek would give Arya almost unlimited access to the Lannisters.

One more thought regarding a potential FM... We assume, at least I do, that Balon Greyjoy was assassinated by a FM. I assume that Euron had his FM dropped off on Pyke at night and then pretended to arrive the next day.

There is a certain amount of skill and insider knowledge that a FM must possess to fit in as an Ironborn... and I do not think that disguise would hold up for long on a reaving ship. The escape from Pyke needed to come as someone overlooked by the authorities... a salt wife or a slave.

If Euron was willing to use a FM once, why not twice? But what could be as important as gaining the Seastone Chair? His bride... the Mother of Dragons. But he entrusted this mission to Victarion... the thing is... he does not trust Victarion.

Euron knows the fleet is loyal to Victarion. Euron knows a FM cannot pass for an Ironborn on a ship amongst real Ironborn over the course of a year. But he needs a spy and mayhaps an assassin to deal with Victarion if he proves treacherous...

The dusky woman. Euron said she was captured off a slaver out of Lys. He said her tongue was cut out. She is beautiful. Like Ser Ilyn, she is a perfect listener. As Victarion's woman, she sees all his moods and hears his plans. She has access to him when he's injured and when he's asleep. And she does not have to mingle with the rest of the Ironborn.

I really like the idea of Kevan being FM'd. Also, it would confirm my theory that varys is a FM or allied with them in some way.

I also like the idea of the Dusky Woman for the purposes of this thread. As you said, and as I pointed out in my OP, a mute would make a perfect FM.

If the Dusky woman is a FM then that leaves Illyn and Wex open as well.

jules, you're correct! The Manderly's were teaching him to read and write! That's how they're figuring out what really happened at Winterfell... I'd forgotten.

So here's a question....

If we assume all these Faceless Men are running around, they don't murder and meddle with the best laid plans of mice and men for sh*ts and giggles. Who's employing them?

Refer back to my Varys theory :)

Ever, Skagos is the most remote location and the most god-forsaken land in the Seven Kingdoms. It's also rumored to be filled with cannibals. Which southron lord would seriously go there to look for anyone? Lancel? Mace? They Freys? Which northern lord, believing himself to be a hard man, would willingly put himself back into the food chain for a boy who must have already been the appetizer? Only a die hard Stark loyalist or a man with nothing to lose would investigate Skagos.

Osha knows that and the fact that winter is coming and the Others with it. Osha left the North to escape, would she really go back to the place known for cannibals and what not? If I were Osha, I would dare fight against a live, breathing thing than the one who breathes naught and dead cold. How, with the Boltons at the East, Ironmen to the West and South, with neither coin nor food, did they come to that desolate island?

I have yet to finish my reread of AFFC...I'm so looking forward into reading ADWD to enlighten myself again...

I somehow figure that Osha thinks she will be able to fit in with the people of Skagos. One of the houses of Skagos is called Magnar. That sounds like Styr's title, the Magnar of Thenn. Mayhaps, Osha was from Thenn... maybe she's counting on the Skagosi (is that a word?) being more wildling than kneelers. I figure that the rumor of cannibalism are false... they're old wives tales to frighten children. Mayhaps someone ate from a corpse in a decade long winter... like the Donner Party... but I cannot fathom Eddard, of all people, allowing cannibalism in his domains. He'd have made them repent, at swordpoint, like Charlemagne and the Saxons.

Mayhaps Osha knows the Skagosi are not cannibals, but wargs. Mayhaps the cannibal stories like bloodthirsty savages creeping through the moonlight in search of blood are actually misrepresentations by southerners of the true nature of the Skagosi as people who can telepathically link with animals. If this were true, then Osha might be looking for a teacher for Rickon.

As for surviving the trek... I think Osha could live off the land and Shaggydog is both a guardian and a hunter. But how do they get to the island?

But how do they get to the island?

That question among others.

House Magnar is somewhat different from the Thenns...though they both may prefer speaking in the Old Tongue I think(?) Thru Jon's POV, it was known that the Thenns haven't been to see the Wall so depended on Jarl's team to scout and climb...hmm...I don't know anymore. I must stop writing gibberish and return to my re-read while it is still weekend.

OK, divine inspiration has hit me, and I now think that our unkown Faceless man is Syrio Forel, posing as Ser Merryn Trant. based on the Vardis Egen/Bronn foreshadowing fight, I've always felt that Syrio SHOULD be alive/ Being a FM would explain how we are able to see Trant afterward.

Im not sure if im sold on it just yet, however it would be a brilliant in that most readers in general are so fond of syrio, and of his fans those trying to come up with theories of him being alive or a FM would want him to more like some one else they like such as Jaqen and not want to picture him taking the place of some on as cruel as Trant( whos personality would have to stay the same to avoid anyone to suspect). And it is that which makes your theory so appealing to me. I wanna go back and re read more of trants parts now.

your post made my day

thank you for considering my crackpottiness

Syrio is Trant? Watch your crackpotty mouth! You might as well say, Finkle is Einhorn.

I think Trant=Syrio and I'm sticking to it.

Wasn't Ser Merryn outside Kevan Lannister's apartment the night that Varys got in to kill him?

THE WIKI OF ICE AND FIRE STATES YES IMP!

Ser Meryn is present at the Red Keep when Queen Cersei completes her walk of penance.[15] He guards the Hand of the King's apartments in Maegor's Holdfast on the night of Ser Kevan Lannister's death.[16]
