HBO TV series sneaking in possible hints for the book series? !!! SPOILER ALERT!!!

Re: HBO TV series sneaking in possible hints for the book series? !!! SPOILER ALERT!!

Howland Reed knows, and he's in the neighborhood.

Yes. I've been having a debate with a friend about how the show is going to "fix the error of not including the Tower of Joy" (her words, not mine), and I figure that Howland Reed will end up making an appearance at some point to give us the backstory on the ToJ, simply because visual media is more difficult to execute properly regarding subtly. (This is the reason why they had to say who BFS was from the get-go.)

Re: HBO TV series sneaking in possible hints for the book series? !!! SPOILER ALERT!!

My only concern is how the show will deal with it. So far they have not shown any flashbacks, even in dream form, that I can recall. The only dreams we've seen are Bran's wolf dreams (briefly). This leads me to believe we won't SEE the ToJ, but we may very well get to meet howland Reed and have him tell us the story. Visually less stunning of course but I can't see the show doing a "fade-out to flashback" story being told as narrated by Howland Reed.

we will see.

Re: HBO TV series sneaking in possible hints for the book series? !!! SPOILER ALERT!!

A tv series does make you look at things a bit differently.
In the books i can barely stand Danaerys, on screen, at least in the third seasons, i'm liking her.

Hahaha yes. Id also like to add that i was surprised and pumped that they actually showed Robbs body with the wolf head sewn onto it, being i dont remeber it actually being seen by any of the POVs in the book. It was only mentioned and rumored to have happened in conversation with the characters.

Also do we think they will have Theon saying " reek reek, ryhymes with ______" lines on the show now?

I would also like to add, that i didnt expext to much for the finale being it was right after TRW episode, how u ganna top that in 1 hr long episode? But i felt that for those who are just veiwers it didnt leave them with much to get excited about for season 4. Im excited but i know whats still to come. I think they should have @ least introduced Coldhands, or the Red Viper ( @ least announce that those from Dorne are on their way for Joffs wedding). I think at least the intoduction of one or both of those 2 would have left veiwers with " omg whos that guy and wats ganna happen w him around now?" Hence excited for next season already. I dont think coldhands was cut but just slightly delayed in his introduction, ahhhhhh! I cant wait to see him and the Red Viper!

Re: HBO TV series sneaking in possible hints for the book series? !!! SPOILER ALERT!!

Yeah I think Coldhands will be introduced in the next season, now that they aren't paying Richard Madden, Joe Dempsey, Michelle Fairley (maybe) and Oona Chaplin they can hire some new actors.

I also wanted to say that Tyrion Lannister is quite possibly the best character of any series ever. The whole seen with the small council was absolute gold. You're right that they didn't leave a whole lot for non-book readers to be excited for in the next season, but hopefully the first episode will take care of that. As a reader, I can't friggin' wait.

Re: HBO TV series sneaking in possible hints for the book series? !!! SPOILER ALERT!!

Michelle Fairley has been dancing around the questions concerning her death. She said stuff like "I knew how many seasons I was signing on for" but I've yet to hear her say she's leaving for good.

I thought this episode was solid. I laughed out loud at least four times which is good by my standards. Epic scene with the Hound casually ripping those Frey men to pieces. Also pretty certain now that they will cast him for the next season - they can't leave it like that!

Tyrion, Tywin, and also Joffrey. I do think the kid who plays Joff does one hell of a job, because you keep hating him. It's a good build-up between those three and what's to come.

I wish Gilly hadn't named her son. It takes ONE sentence to keep it in line with the books, and come on, we know she's grateful to Sam already. A good scene with Bran and the rest at the Nightfort. Even though that storyline is dull as dishwater I think all the actors do a really good job, especially considering their age.

What with Jaime being back in King's Landing a bit early I'm hoping we'll skip the godawful scene in the Sept of Baelor. Incest, dead child and period blood all in one go. I felt physically sick reading that.

Re: HBO TV series sneaking in possible hints for the book series? !!! SPOILER ALERT!!

Has anyone else noted that Sansa's actions towards Tyrion are much less cold and mechanical in the show than in the books? On my reread I started believing that Sansa does end up happily married to Tyrion and giving him children and through watching the show it seems that she is already beginning to not despise him (right up until she found out about TRW that is). Thoughts?

Re: HBO TV series sneaking in possible hints for the book series? !!! SPOILER ALERT!!

The sweet scene between her and Tyrion last episode was an emotional build-up to her getting the news of the red wedding, so that it would hurt even more. I think that was the only purpose it served, really.

Re: HBO TV series sneaking in possible hints for the book series? !!! SPOILER ALERT!!

I am actually at the same spot in my re-read.

agreed. I actually like the way the show handled it. If she had been so cold and angry right off the bat it wouldn't have fit her character (as interpreted in the show) as well. Of course the show changed things, like her finding out about her marriage to Tyrion much earlier (rather than 10 minutes before the wedding like it happened in the books).

Re: HBO TV series sneaking in possible hints for the book series? !!! SPOILER ALERT!!

The scene with Joff and his counsil where he gets all pissy and throws a tantrum about serving Robbs head to sansa all to be put in his place by grandpa Tywin was just awesome!!! I couldnt help but snicker and giggle. The actor who plays Joff does such a good job and makes it so easy to hate him. Poor fellow as being his 1st break out role i hope it doesnt damage his career should he pursue other project because i feel no one can get over him being Joff and hating him so. The curse of being to good @ playing the role.

Re: HBO TV series sneaking in possible hints for the book series? !!! SPOILER ALERT!!

I actualt felt in the books (with the conversation in the litter(?)between Sansa and Tyrion, amongs others) that Sansa doesn't think too badly of Tyrion. It's just Tyrion is a Lannister and a malformed dwarf. Not exactly the combination a young 14year old Stark girl will swoon over for. Hell, i'd say most woman whilst come to like Tyrion for the person that he is, could probably not bring themselves to love Tyrion as a guy. I'm saying this ofcourse as a heterosexual guy who doesn't really know what most woman think, but that is just my hunch.
That and i don't ever see myself falling in love with a dwarf. I got nothing against dwarfes, i just don't think i'd ever feel sexually attracted to one. Ofcourse you never know in live. Might be i do end up falling in love with a dwarf (or small person, or .. not really sure what the political correct term is). I just don't see it happening.

On another note, i'm not exactly sure how old the actress who plays Sansa is, and i know kids grow up quick these days BUT i laughed when Tyrion referred to her as 14y old. I actually thought they had increased the characters age/tweaked the timelines a bit when making the show. That sansa was 14 when meeting Joffrey but 16 by now. Srly though 14y old? That is how old i give the actress who plays Arya.

K looked it up Sophie Turner is 18, Maisie Williams is surprisingly 17. Must be her boyish outfit that makes her seem younger.

That and her small stature. Or is it just that she keeps being put next to huge people like the Hound?

This doesn't really have anything to do with anything but has anyone noticed that Pod kind of looks like Gendry?

Re: HBO TV series sneaking in possible hints for the book series? !!! SPOILER ALERT!!

I was surprised they brought Jaime back to KL before Joff's wedding. I wonder how that will end up changing things...like how it's going to play into the choosing of champions at Tyrion's trial.

Also...what's this about the hound? Is HBO having issues negotiating with the actor for next season or something? He's too good as the hound to change him now!

Also not entirely sure how I feel about them aiming Stannis at the Wall so clearly. I remember that Stannis's appearance there caught me somewhat off guard the first time I read the books. Then again, that might be because I simply couldn't put them down long enough to think about what was happening and just needed to readreadread.

Re: HBO TV series sneaking in possible hints for the book series? !!! SPOILER ALERT!!

I am rereading this part now and they definately lay ground work, but its not nearly so obvious. much of it happens the same way, with Davos reading through the old scrolls and letters and finding the letter from the night's watch, and then after he helps Gendrick escape he brings the scroll to Stannis as a last hope for Stannis to save his life. the only difference is that in the book, It cuts off with Davos starting to read the letter, and we don't learn what the letter actually says until Stannis shows up at the wall.

Re: HBO TV series sneaking in possible hints for the book series? !!! SPOILER ALERT!!

I actually was extremely disappointed by what they did with Stannis. They changed the essence of the scene and thus the essence of Stannis' character.

When Stannis tells Davos off for releasing Edric Storm, he casually mentions killing him for treason, he doesn't sentence him to death. Secondly, Mel is nowhere to be seen in that scene. Stannis wanted to talk to Davos candidly and without her interference. Since Davos' life was never threatened (and even if it had been, he would never have pleaded), Davos calmly mentions the letter and implores to Stannis' goodness and fairness. Then yes, it is left open until Stannis actually shows up at the Wall.

That being said, the way it's done in the series completely changes the context, and thus the impact, of that whole scene. Stannis was never super "down with" killing Edric Storm, so he wasn't totally invested in a punishment for Davos. (Yes, he threatened it, but halfheartedly.) Sentencing Davos to death thus seemed really out of character. Secondly, when Davos "pleads" for his life, he throws the Watch letter out as a means of saving his own life, rather than a "well, even though you're going to kill me, you should still know this" (which would have been way more in Davos' character), Mel is right there to read the letter and thus tells Stannis what to do rather than the decision coming from moral, upright Stannis himself out of a sense of duty to protect the realm.

I felt like they did Davos a disservice in the scene, and that they totally changed the one element of Stannis that made people cheer for him. When Stannis shows up on the Wall, he's the king who cared when no one else did, and that makes him a bit of a hero. To take that decision away from him, and have it be Mel's no less, makes him a thrall completely under her power, incapable of making decisions for himself. Not cool.

Re: HBO TV series sneaking in possible hints for the book series? !!! SPOILER ALERT!!

I feel like they marginalized Davos a few times in the series. I remember feeling the same when they had Davos leading all the ships into Tyrion's Blackwater trap when it was Ser Imrey Florent (against Davos's advice) in the book.

Not true at all actually. Like I said, I literally just read that chapter and Mel is indeed there when all this goes down. Stannis is very angry and though he never says he will execute Davos, he does imply it by drawing his sword and waiting to hear what Davos has to say.

Davos knelt. "If I have offended, take my head. I'll die as I lived, your loyal man. But hear be first. Hear me for the sake of the onions I brought you and the fingers you took"

Stannis slid lightbringer from it's scabbard. It's glow filled the chamber. "Say what you will but say it quickly." The muscles in the kings neck stood out like cords.

Davos is down on his knees begging to be heard and Stannis is standing with a sword drawn, and we all know what message is sent by naked steel.

In the book, the scene is cut when Davos starts reading the letter so we never find out exactly how Stannis or Mel take that news or how Stannis decides to go north to fight the wildlings. For all we know, it could have happened just like in the show

What? Is there some info out that I'm not aware of? Rory McCann is a huge fan of the books and his character, and I very much doubt he would be the one to break off a contract. That being said, his storyline doesn't exactly go very far from here in the books unless they want to make the gravedigger theory explicitly canon.
