I think I can see Disney's plan in regards of this series, and them denying some of the canon that was made under Lucas's guiding hand. His palm print can be seen in everything that there was, but when it comes to the Mickey Mouse company they're doing some slaughter, but they're actually shaping the universe by opening it up rather than coming to the end of the road.
The Droids, The Jedi Order, The Works had to go out from the window without doing them some disorder. And in there we have to accept the truth that Empire's Stormtroops cannot shoot if their life depended on it, but you can see that the brotherhood hasn't forgotten their own. The memorabilia from the Clone Wars lives in the settings, while the whole thing moves towards the Episode 4 - New Hope.
So, like it has been said, it's refreshing to see that Jedi's aren't all too powerful, but they actually follow the blueprint that was developed for the Knights of the Old Republic. They are kind of lost, just like the whole order, while Empire has spread his evil around the galaxy. And in the heart lies the Sith - The Emperor Palpatine, and his apprentice Darth Vader.
But what they never said in the Episode 4 was that the Sith weren't there, that they didn't spread their evil through their lackeys like the Inquisitor. I strongly doubt that he follows full Sith order, but he's actually something that Vader developed under Emporer's acceptance as the next phase enemy - as something bigger than just two of them.
Droids however are bigger than just R2D2 and C3PO. And in there Chopper presents different side of the Ai that powers the Astromechs. He has same kind of personality that we saw in the Clone Wars droids, minus the humour that we saw deeply rooted in the battle-droids, or other mechanical lifeforms. And his humour through what he does is definitely funny, if you allow yourself to laugh at it. He isn't perfect like 3CPO, but something that has been going through a hard-life after it's model had come out from the assembly line.
