Discussion thread -- SEVENTY-FIVE WORD WRITING CHALLENGE November 2013

Wey-hey! Thanks for the vote, springs. And if they're too dark for you, I expect to get nightmares once I've read them!

Runners up: ratsy, glen, Brev, Abernovo, mosaix, Parson, Hex, The Judge, Moonbat, jastius

My vote went to Culhwch.

Thanks for the mention Victoria.

Thanks for the mention, martin!

I had another I meant to mention. I thought farntfar's story was quality.

Certainly some dark ones this month. It was a hard choice. I excluded a few (some really good ones, too) as I didn't feel they fitted the genre. Personal reading, though, of course.

My shortlist comprised

mosaix
alchemist
Glitch
HareBrain
The Dusty Zebra
Hex

The vote went to mosaix.

And, while here, a Special Mention for Starbeast, who once again brought a smile to my face with his own brand of wacky, wonderful humour in his entry.

An interesting and enjoyable set of entries this month. With a diverse take on the theme making it difficult to compare like for like, it had to come down to personal taste. So, the stories I liked and admired the most were from...

Victoria Silverwolf, Culhwch, alchemist, Hex and (vote) Ursa major.

(And, thank you to Martin for the mention.)

I've mentioned my favorites so far. The one that stood out for me was Culhwch's, about a detective who keeps his own secrets for the sake of the families of murdered children.

Mentions for Springs, Mosaix and Judge.
Karn was 3rd for me and Culhwch a vote contender for a while, but you were shamelessly piped at the post.

There will be no surprises here, my vote goes to Starbeast who really did make me laugh out loud – good job. The blank vacant face of Ray Gunner seems very familiar and he does seem like my type of guy! I have been trying to catch up with Ray, but all I’ve been able to find it this rusty old shopping trolley with a squeaking wheel. Of no use, as I watch the flashing strobe lights disappear off into the sunset. Ray Gunner, you’re my hero!

I was solidly in the blonde camp this month, which is very crowded, so I’m not expecting much for myself this month. I enjoyed it, but well out of my comfort zone when reading, so I was stuck with the old cliché’s.

Voting, schmoting... this month I only need two votes, because two stories tied equally in first place. Can I give them half a vote each? There are dead heats in every other competition...

So, another great challenge and another round if inventive, funny, horror-ble and ingenious stories. Shortlist, finalists, *tied for 1st place* and the one the coin favoured

Martin 3231
Brev
Chrispenycate
Culwhwch
Juliana
Farntfar
Mosaix
Harebrain
DEO
Ursa Major
*Glen* his unmasking of the perpetrator who has caused so much mayhem (and didn't give us two votes, either!) was masterful, and incredibly well-written. I had to do a best-of-three toin coss, because there was nothing between him and Starbeast. Glen, you were a winner in my book, and I truly wish I'd had two votes.
*Starbeast* This story was laugh-out-loud, and it's amazing how so few words can conjure up such a clear picture. Great job Starbeast!

woods -- Blends science fiction with crime fiction, and manages to add a bit of true detection into a entertaining whole.

Thanks for the review Victoria! My first entry to the 75 word challenge. Great just to be here, awesome little chunked stories!

Brilliant entries. I liked the range we had here, from deliciously dark to clever comedy.

Shortlist:

Martin321 - (for the clever circle)
Springs - (for the cheeky nod: "- elephants, they're smart -")
Victoria Silverwolf - (for the wit & making one of my heroes a cross-dresser)
Bob Senior - (for the language and "oozing life like red out of a cheap box of wine.")
Boneman - (for a wicked 75 word farce!)
Jastius - (for the strong imagery and scene)

Runners up:

Brev - (for making me laugh)
David Evil Overlord - (for originality, a great idea)
Ursa Major - (for the strong story and a fantastic title)

Vote:

Culhwch - Wow, I want to be able to do that one month. A full story, a cracking ending, a whole character and all set at a perfect pace. Very nicely done Culhwch!

Thanks for the short-listing, BM. :)

And thanks for making me a runner up, Remedy. :)
