Infused with the primordial energies of the big bang, these space-faring life forms float on the tides and currents of inter-steller waves. Unlike terrestrial based bacteria that grow in colonies, a hundred thousand years could pass before an individual particle comes into contact with another of it's kind, making divergence and evolution very slow within the species. Certain colonies of Bactero-Celestial particles have, over the billions of years, traveled far and mutated to become sentient. Such colonies are drifting repositories of history, and graciously welcomed and treasured when passing through. Several religious institutions have been founded upon the words of these floating ancients. Other particle clusters have yielded great scientific data on the early stages of the universe.

Bralgellian Brandy

Most alcoholic beverages consumed by the various races passing through Stonewall fort waxed and waned in popularity over the seasons. In the summertime, light beers, fruit wines and punches were the order of the day. Barrels of each were being consumed with a thirst that was seemingly unquenchable in the warmth of the long lived sun.

In the wintertime tastes changed as the nights drew in and the air grew frigid with frost. Strong, dark ales were served in sturdy tankards and the refreshing fruit concoctions were replaced by fiery spirits and spiced liquors to warm inside what the welcoming fireplace could not.

A particular favourite around this time of year was Bralgellian Brandy. This potent, viscous beverage was renowned for its high price tag as a result of the closure of the only distillery some decades ago. Little was known of its formulation or production though legend would say it was the brain child of an ancient wizard. Tired of the humdrum drinks served in every tavern one would enter he decided to create something with a little more challenge.

Left long enough the contents of each glass would crawl over the rim to try and reunite itself with its fellow Brandy-brothers. If one was not careful it would sneak away from the glass, off the table and meld with other escapees before rendezvousing, usually on the ceiling of the establishment.

Such was the mischief that several unattended glasses could cause, it's sale was carefully monitored to ensure the troublesome drink did not completely coat the surface of a tavern by careless drinkers, and also to reduce the effect of the knock-you-down strength of a single glass.

Gamma 314

Gamma 314... accessing.

File found.

"Gamma 314 has proven to be the most adequate stabilizing agent for the creature." Professor Cliffhaven noted in his report. By isolating the genome of the creature, Missionary scientists synthesized a chemical compound that inhibits and shores up the creatures' natural biological mechanisms. In truth, the creature is placed into a suspended animation whereby it can neither move nor mutate.

WARNING: Experimental compound Gamma 314 has been officially classified, under direct orders of his Imperious Majesty, Lord President Geranimar. Access of file prohibited, access by this ID has been logged.

2 Headed Daffodil

Malachi Jazeera stepped off the slidewalk into GreenDreams Flower Shop. The door scanned his retinas, discovered that he had a B+ credit rating, and opened with a quiet purr. The shop was full of translucent cylinders of various sizes and a variety of pastel colors. Within each floated a holo of exquisite blooms. Perfect blue roses; phototropic vines that moved like sleepy snakes; mushrooms the size of large dogs, yellow as sunshine. As he passed each display a fine mist drifted from the ceiling, carrying the appropriate scent to his nostrils, followed by a neutralizer that prepared him for the next sample. In a lonely corner he found a tiny cylinder which held a single two-headed daffodil. The price for this rare object, inscribed in the holojector's smart glass, was alarming. Was it too extreme a gesture for a simple thank you note for a first date?

Windsingers

Windsingers, Allosol vextris, are the subjects of more contention than any other scientific specimens. Regina Vulpes has hypothesised that windsingers are of extraterrestrial origin and reached Earth with the great meteorite shower of 2015. Other allosolologists argue that, even in their inert, macro-crystalline form, windsingers are not sufficiently robust to survive transit through space. These allosolologists suggest either that prehistoric, subterranean deposits of windsingers were exposed and revitalised by the 2015 meteorite impact or, most controversially, that windsingers are a man-made or even an AI-made life form.

The use of the term 'life form' to refer to windsingers is itself contentious. Windsingers are complex, ferrosiliceous, variably crystalline structures with feathered silicone filaments that are succeptible to movement by the wind. Movement of the filaments induces small electrical currents and leads to non-random changes in crystalline structure and alignment. In their influential 2032 paper, Jones and Jones argued that these changes are analogous to growth and replication, and that the transmission of individual variability in crystalline clustering through generations enables evolutionary change.

Traditional biologists have refuted Jones and Jones' paper, by pointing out that evolution is not a uniquely biological process, and by arguing that biochemical processes are fundamental to the definition of life.

Suggestions that the sounds generated by windsingers' filaments have a communicative function are almost universally disregarded.

Longshots

The People of the Valley. The very words bring to mind the tall, feathered figures of warriors and wisemen, healers and farmers. The villages and farms spreading out across the valley's basin and gentle slopes were a massive realm, all controlled and guarded by the elite Moondancers.

To facilitate communication between the farthest edges of the valley, the People utilized remarkable devices called the Windsingers. The Windsingers created and collected the wind, which when trapped could be understood as a message. Coloured dust was added to a Windsinger which when utilized released the dust with the message contained within to float on to the village the message was meant for. Each village had it's Windsinger, each one cared for and operated by a Moondancer. Some said the souls of the dead traveled to a Windsinger to then be sent out into the winds and on to the afterworld. How the dust cloud knew which village to go and why it did not dissipate was never truly understood, however it was believed that the winds of the valley were the domain of the daughters of Ehaa, the Lord of the Sky, and it was these guardians that worked tirelessly to deliver message back and forth. Blue dust was used for the warriors, green was for official communications, and black was used for the wisemen. Simple white smoke was for the everyday man and woman, who were summoned when a message was received.

The Never-Diminishing-Always-Glistening

"Whitebait with soul," murmured the Swordbearer, eying the Never-diminishing-Always-Glistening with wary contempt. It had taken the pioneers almost a millennium to recognise the source of their many troubles, and to realise the wisdom of treating courteously with the indigenous life form. Recognition and realisation had finally won them the tranquility needed to move from precarious pioneering to stable settlement, but the costs had been great. The greatest cost had been to their pride.

Longshots

Used only in carefully deployed numbers in all but the most pivotal of naval fleet engagements, Longshot artillery was considered the flagship killer on the battle grids of the 32nd century. While energy weapons were the mainstay of the bristling surfaces of spacefaring warships the few solid shell weapons that had carried through the long and brutal history of warfare were minuscule in comparison to the Longshot Naval Artillery Gun.

A massive shell the size of a mid range destroyer would be transported into the colossal breach of the weapon, easily reaching a diameter of hundreds of metres. Each shell weighed several thousand tonnes and were loaded with a warhead of inert Tungsten, Iridium and Lonsdaleite.

Fired at a massive range of millions of kilometres using hundreds of banks of linear accelerators the weapons avoided detection by leaving no emission signature or exhaust trail, relying on their speed of a fraction of the speed of light, to reach their target unscathed. The impact would result in a blinding flash of nuclear fusion coupled with forces in excess of the structural limits of any warship design to date. Simply fielding one of these weapons would be more than capable of turning the tide of a battle.

The use of these weapons was strictly monitored due to concerns that any shot fired would not dissipate or neutralise as it travelled through space and could one day reach a colony or planet resulting in a catastrophic loss of life.

Hoarfrost ferret

The hoarfrost ferret (Mustela glacialis) was first discovered in a remote part of Baffin Island, after the GoogleLife Biosphere Analysis Project was completed in the late '30's. The unusually high albedo of its fur renders it nearly indistiguishable from the ice fields in which it lives. Surviving on the smaller mammals, birds, and fish of the Arctic regions, the hoarfrost ferret spends nearly all its time eating, pausing only briefly to sleep and, once or twice a year, mate. Attempts to domesticate the hoarfrost ferret as an exotic pet have led to results tragic both to the animals and humans.

Quickgold

A crucial component in the construction of Titanium concrete, quickgold interacts violently with water of a Ph over 5 kilohoos, and then mixed with the titanium powder formed a solid mass of titanium concrete. Discovered by Terran scientists as a further state of Gold Hydroxide, the interaction similar to salt peter utilized in limewashes of old. The heat produced by the water and hydroxide aids in setting and sealing the titanium mass. Used exclusively in ship building, for unlike pure Titanium sheets, titanium concrete is easy to seal and very easy to shape. It is as strong as the original titanium, but uses a mere quarter.

Jewel of September

Take care.

A single Jewel of September is more valuable, and more beautiful, than any collection of real jewels. September Jewels are most valued for their medicinal qualities rather than for their beauty or their exquisite flavour, as extensive medical studies have shown that their unique egalstrogens interrupt the aging process.

However, the risks of harvesting the fruit are almost insurmountable. The carnivorous September plants are found on wind-blasted island cliff-faces, and their fruit hang from the uppermost tendrils, above metre-wide pitchers. The report that the pitchers emit a soporific, addictive vapour is supported by the observations that very few harvesters are successful, that most successful harvesters feel compelled to attempt a second harvest, and that no-one has successfully harvested more than one Jewel of September.

Smigriffles

The name of a particular form of pie found throughout the low countries. Smigriffles was first developed at the court of King Gerald the Fair, where it was unveiled at his coronation banquet. The basic filling is a mixture of herbs such as Crabgrass and spices such as SpruceBane, imported from the southern Kingdoms. These are joined by raisins and cranberries that have been stewed in liquor. This potent mixture of flavour is then combined with the main meat component, minced griffin. Indeed it is because the main component is griffin that smigriffles is so costly and only created for special occasions. A substitute meat used by the lower orders is marinated elk, which gives a somewhat similar gamey taste as griffin. The pastry though is the most impressive component of the pie, usually being shaped in the form of a griffin's head covered in gold leaf after baking so as to give the illusion of a severed head. It is tradition that a silver Crown Sovereign is placed somewhere in the pie, and the lucky finder is thus awarded a special token by the King later. As only certain individuals within the King's court is permitted a slice, this tradition has become regarded as an egalitarian gesture of feudal goodwill.

Cosmoculars

Cosmoculars

When early astronautical pioneers, such as the great Percival Dash and the gone-but-not-forgotten Captain Briony Silvers, reached the great cresting heavens in the sky above our own they brought back tales of leaping space dragons and lightning wielding Merpeople who chased them back to earth spouting flames all the way down. It seemed in these strange tales that any means of navigating the outer heavens was sorely lacking.

Compasses, sextants and all manner of other gadgetry failed in the void, where up and down mean nothing and the motherly tug of our beloved world was nowhere to be found. Cast adrift in the blackness an eminent alchemist and scientific extraordinaire, named Clarence Harlowe, devised the prototype of the Cosmocular a fiendishly clever piece of instrumentation that would turn our aimless floundering into an eternal dominion of the outer heavens.

A pair of viewing lenses affixed to the face of the wearer displaying different images in various spectrums of light and colour. Arguably the most helpful of these different views was the starlight navigator. By tapping into the ethereal fluids that ran throughout the known cosmos, magnificent rivers, streams and raging torrents could be seen and safely traversed resulting in journeys to our neighbouring planets lasting but a matter of seconds and travel beyond that being only hours or days. The bountiful worlds of our galaxy were now open to claim and command in the name of Britannia and her Allies.

Hyperia's Toolbox

Among the many tragic losses which occurred when the great library of Alexandria was destroyed, the complete destruction of the manuscripts of Hyperia must be counted as one of the greatest. Just as the more famous Hypatia was the earliest known great female mathematician, Hyperia was the earliest known great female engineer. Thought to be a student of Hero of Alexandria, who developed a small steam engine, Hyperia is best known for her so-called "toolbox." Although we have only hints as to its contents, this fabled container (more probably a large wooden chest, rather than a portable box) is said to have been filled with a variety of devices far in advance of their time. Claims have been made that Hyperia invented an unusually precise lathe, as well as a simple slide rule. We can only imagine what our world might be like if her inventions had not been lost.

Hellflowers

Hellflowers were a type of large anti-personel mines developed and used in the Franco-Greek war. The mines were deployed under ground, and when stepped on, would explode a capsule containing highly flammable napalm-like liquid, drenching the surrounding area and soldiers; a time-delay would then ignite the liquid, while the capsule was still spraying, and cause a violent fire. Sometimes the mines were rigged, to cause other mines explode, thereby creating a so-called "Flowerfield".

Black Sun Drive

The Black Sun Drive was the name given to the first line of Sub-Stellar Confinement Fusion Reactors. The principle method of function was to create and contain a plasma sphere inside the largest fusion reaction cask ever made. with a diameter of 200 metres, the usual magnetic containment methods used in smaller reactors was insufficient to stop the reaction from evaporating away.
Like the countless billions of stars in our universe, Researchers used gravity to focus the reaction into a stable form. The energy output of the fusion reaction was carefully manipulated resulting in the visible light portions of the reaction to be all but removed.
As a result the reaction was only visible as a huge tumultuous black sphere produced by a bizzarre quantum effect known as "Null-light"
The researchers stationed near the Cask reported a whole range of phenomena such as objects levitating of their own accord, visual anomalies and altered spatial awareness. Due to the unpleasant working conditions associated with these power sources they were generally automated and isolated from large populations as orbiting stations or isolated power plants for the largest of installations.

Chrome Hammer

Lord Chrome the Hairless, founder of the Irsan Empire and Warrior-Elite personally led his troops into battle carrying the massive war hammer, the Chrome Hammer. Able to penetrate even the toughest plate armour or shatter the hardiest shields, it was a weapon of legendary status that required all of Chrome's skill to handle in battle.
The hammer was two feet in length, a dull black metal shaft wrapped in red leather with a hardened steel spike on the bottom and a large steel hammer head on the top. The reverse of the hammer head held another curved spike.
The weapon was alleged to be sentient and somewhat vampiric requiring it's share of blood, hence the war-like stature of the Irsan race, however since the Hammer is lost, this is more myth than fact.

Namkoll Horn

The legendary Namkoll Horn, drinking vessel of the late Gerrhardt Stormcaller. Stormcaller lived to the ripe old age of four hundred and eleven, old even for the reclusive mountain dwarves. In his lifetime he was warrior, blacksmith and poet, his later works including the great Rolling War Call of Hammerfound; a thousand word epic spanning two centuries.
The Namkoll Horn itself was gifted to Gerrhardt by the sidhe prince Ebonflower Darkheart for saving his life during the siege of Nagglarheimr, said to imbue it's owner with remarkable good fortune and longevity. This certainly seems to be the case for Gerrhardt who died happily, horn in hand surrounded by twenty seven children and over a hundred descendants in total.
