What are you working on right now?

I'm researching medieval men's names in England. Very interesting. You have the Norman names becoming dominant, but mixed with Saxon, Celtic, German, Nordic... a real mash-up. And names I'd never imagine existed back then (Curtis, anyone?).

Rather fond of 'Botolf' and 'Filbert' myself. :ROFLMAO:

Also, Beavis! (But not Butt-Head)

Juliana, it's like Raymond (in that period) or Jason. They sound really modern. And really aren't.

Ralph, Roger, Alan, Brian, Conan... Okay, maybe not Conan nowadays. :D Yes, I was impressed by how many current names are old as the hills, and I'm not talking about classics like William and Henry!

My own name, too; I knew it was old, but not THAT old.

I've (at last!) reached the endgame of book 2 of my series, so I've spent a large part of the day wading through old plotting documents, which were written so long ago that a lot of the names are different, trying to remember what's supposed to happen here. Frankly, I'm not much the wiser.

The Sir Edric Effect, Jo ;)

Having struggled with a fairly simple chapter, this heavier, more complicated one, is flying by. About 80% into the first draft of Traitor's Prize.

[Whilst not delighted I couldn't get Kingdom Asunder out last year, that delay does mean there should be a shorter distance between that and Traitor's Prize, so hopefully it'll turn out to be a blessing in disguise].

Also reading through Sir Edric's Kingdom for errors. Comedy is great to write, and terrible to check, because all the humour runs away. So, I end up reading a comedy, but almost nothing makes me smile, let alone laugh. The to-do list is already enormous.

Hi Juliana,

What have you got against us Curtis'? It's an ancient and honorable name which supposedly comes from the French Curtisse - or politeness. And we have a family motto "We shall not inherit!" while our coat of arms includes three ducks walking to the left wearing gumboots - as in presumably we don't fly! Apparently we were the third sons etc, and ended up in the priesthood or the armies.

And the sad thing - most people probably think I'm kidding! (Hangs head in sorrow.)

Cheers, Greg Curtis.

I'm working on a sci fi novel about humanity's first trip through a wormhole to a habitable planet where the crew are captured by an alien federation which are planning to diplomatically subjugate Earth by appealing to the elite classes. Members of the captured crew escape their holding cells and find them selves in the bowels of the ship where they meet a resistance group. They explain how their home planets were subjugated and now everyone works for the federation, is conscripted into their armed forces and their is mass inequality as it sucks up all the wealth out of the planet with the help of the planets elite. Its going pretty well so far.

I'm currently working on proposals for the next two Manifest Delusions novels (which are already written). One is a sequel of Beyond Redemption and the other is a new cast of characters but in the same world.

Proposals. Yay.
Query letters. Party on.
The short pitch. Let the okay times roll.
Plot synopses. Please kill me.

Surely the plural of Curtis is Curtes?

Oh, and still plowing through book 2. The bugger is fighting me but I'll pin it down and beat it into submission. Get that, submission. Sigh. o_O

Ha, I know that feeling [well, with killing people rather than romance].

I am about to revise my 6-novel series "Seeds of a Fallen Empire" for I hope the last time. It has proven difficult getting an editor for this apart from my father and sister. I already self-published the series on amazon, but I feel it could use some minor revisions which will take a while (and like many aspiring writers, I can't afford to pay a professional editor). I've been writing this series for 30 years, so I think this will be the last revision--I hope! I finished revising book one: The Last Immortal, but I now have 5 books to go and feel overwhelmed. I started revising the second book last summer but laid it aside and now hope to start on it again. I got so fed up with writing endless queries to agents and publishing houses, for more than twenty years. I finally decided it was best to self-publish.

I am also now writing a short story called "Mindreader". Hopefully, this one won't take long to finish. I would like to write another novel or story set in the universe of "Seeds of a Fallen Empire" that I created as well. I just have ideas so far, and have yet to write anything new. But hopefully I will start on this soon.

There were times when I was writing my series that my sister had to drag me away from my computer and shut the light out on me so that I would go to sleep. I think the energy I had then (fifteen years ago) was amazing. When your novel starts to spring to life easily, it is wonderful. I just wish I could find again this kind of energy and inspiration now. To create a character and group of characters that seem to have a life of their own to you is a great gift. It feels good to be almost controlled by the idea that has taken over your life with such creative energy. It's a private joy that you hope to share with others in the work that you've created.

I think now I will just start to write something new, and see where any new ideas lead me, whatever kind of story springs into my mind...

I spent most of the afternoon/evening/night planning out a sequel to my previous WIP, The Hammer of God, (finished a 2nd draft of it and wanted to do something different so that when I go over it again, it will be fresh).

I had breaks in my concentration (two different episodes of The Professionals on tv, watching game shows Tipping Point and Pointless and a fascinating hour-long episode of River Monsters about which combination of river predators attacked the people on a sinking ferry on the Amazon thirty years ago where possibly 300 of 5/600 passengers and crew died. The Sobral Santos disaster.)

I also wanted to plan out my chapters to my story plan but I will have to do that tomorrow now.

I am working on episodes for Kraxon Magazine, and plan to get back to the novel this week too.
