What are you working on right now?

Right now I'm working on a short story taken from a childhood fairy tale, Little Red Riding Hood. It's going into an anthology, which I'm proud to say, so I've been trying to look up how to make everything work. I read a lot a while ago, but I think I forgot a lot of things. Anyway, the theme of the anthology is on the dark side, and after I found an app to confirm, my story seems to go along with that theme.

I have decided to write a 12-part novella series, which I am publishing on Smashwords for free: Smashwords – Chasing Cockroaches - Novella Series Book 1: Hail to the Thief – a book by R.M. Howard

Set in a deprived part of Bristol, each part of Chasing Cockroaches follows the adventures of a man who has decided to go vigilante in order to rid his community of its low life. Each month the stakes rise and the morality gets murkier.

Being a writer who has spent years pouring over the same texts, I wanted to challenge myself with the pressure of producing a new work to deadline each month. Already I think it's brought out a different tone and think I will enjoy the process - although I guess I have to stay disciplined.

It's free to download so would love it if anyone on here wanted to add to their libraries.

Hi,

Well the first draft of Samual (previously Shavarra - damn I hate the new name!) went to the editor at 2:00 am this morning. Already been abused by her for sending emails at such an hour! And she hates the title too!

Now I'm playing Skyrim.

Cheers, Greg.

If you hate the name, surely you should change it?

Hi,

Too close to Shannara. I put the cover out on facebook and that comment kept coming back and can't afford to be conected in any way to another book.

Cheers, Greg.

But if you hate the new name that's almost as bad. I'm pretty awful at naming things myself [another Sir Edric example, every title is Sir Edric And X, or Sir Edric's Y], but unless there's a hard deadline I'd advocate trying to change the name to something you like, or at least can tolerate.

Hi Thad,

I tend to agree, but one thing about the new title - it fits the cover so much better than the old one. Less letters I suppose and the L works better than the A. But yeah, I'm crap at titles. Most of my books have had half a dozen before I finally settled on one.

Cheers, Greg.

I'm currently organising my notes for a critique but my main work at the moment is inking a comic that I'll be sending off to the printer at the end of the month.

Following a rather encouraging meeting, I am now in research mode, drinking Spanish draught lager in a busy bar alone, it's quite liberating. Register and note emotions, noticing others noticing me, the subsequent rush of insecurity/confidence and shy quick glances n smiles from the attractive, yet, to young barmaid. The cold slide of the hoppy liquid, as it gently fogs this light drinkers head. Another? Well it'd be rude not to ...

I wish I was in London, pre-gaming for the Chrons mash up later mind.

I'm working at getting my book's first draft done finally. I went crazy on it for NaNo then let it sit while I did other things...mainly Woodbridge related. I am back at it, hoping to get the words all down for the end of March where I can start working on fixing some plot holes and rewriting scenes. I hope to have it betable...(did I just create a word?) by May or June. And then I will see if anyone thinks it is readable.

Trying to get back into a YA that I've had kicking around for a little while. Making slow progress, but some progress at least. My goal is to have a draft finished by year's end. We'll see how that goes.

I am currently workig on a piece about deliberate isolation.

I've been trying to get 500 words a day down in my book, and so far it seems to be working. I've added about 4,000 words in the past week and have a clear path on the final climax and denouement. If I keep this up I should be on schedule to have the draft done by the end of March.

I've just today finished my 4 book series, first drafts. I started on New Years Day and gave myself until today to finish it. So, Right on target. In total it comes out to 343,764 words (about a quarter are probably spelled wrong). On top of them I've written 3 challenge entries, one of which was a winner, and an 800ish word short that I've submitted to a local annual anthology, which i'm hopeful will be accepted.

Busy busy.

But im back to reality tomorrow and my wordcounts are going to plummet drastically, for the next while at least. But second drafts will be in order soon.

Beginning the intensely awkward business of self-promotion.

Dwelling in a cavern on a small island in the North Sea, where my social interactions are limited to attacking seagulls and being gifted seven red-haired maidens annually by the local village to appease my wrath, does not endow one with natural extroversion.

[The Adventures of Sir Edric (Volume One) is out on 31 March, incidentally. And you should buy it. Not because that will enable me to buy food, but because it's funnier than a mongoose wearing a fez].
