DISCUSSION -- June 2014 75 Word Writing Challenge

"...takes place in the (historical) past" may even cover periods during which some of us were alive....

As I understand it "historical fiction" would mean that the setting has to be "historical" and "allegorical" or "mythical" are not acceptable. But that the characters in question do not have to be "historical." Does that sound right?

Anya --- Seriously creepy!!!

sounds right parson. the way i read it is that it's fictional characters against a historically accurate setting

Well bum. I was going to go for mythical Parson! Thought it might twist around the historical thing...nevermind, I'll keep thinking.

And Alc 1000 posts? What? Where? I don't see 1000 posts anywhere...what's that over there! *runs in opposite direction*

That is also the trouble I have with this one, Kylara. I know exactly what Historical Fiction means and it is outside my scope of expertise. Or even my scope of experience.

And don't worry about the thousand posts thing. I didn't do anything my my marker and you shouldn't have to either. Actually, come to think of it, I haven't posted anything in critiques for years...

I was thinking I could have sphinxes attacking Romans battling Greeks (who are actually Sphinxes in Space Armour that makes them look like Greeks) But that is out of the question now :p

Haha I have something Karn, but not sure what bit of it to plonk up, if at all... ;)

I had an idea, days later, but I'm not sure about it. Fingers crossed I get another idea as I'm a little stumped. I don't think RAY GUNS will do it this month.

AnyaKimlin -- With only a few carefully chosen words, the author creates a grim character study of unusual psychological depth.

springs -- The brutality of warfare is captured by by this strong tale of desperation.

Flyerman11 -- The reader is swept back across millenia in this recreation of an anicent time.

farntfar -- An imaginative variation on classic tales of swashbuckling is offered by this witty story.

ratsy -- The author daringly walks a thin line between history and theology and manages to maintain a perfect balance between the two.

Cat's Cradle -- With quiet diginity, this all-too-real account of the tragedies of the recent past reaches for the reader's heart.

BigJ -- With a sure touch, the author ponders the great mysteries of faith.

(*I apologize for offering an entry so similar in theme; purely a coincidence, since I did not read any of the stories before posting my own. I hope that our pieces can be seen as reflections of each other seen in a fun house mirror.)

Thank you for all of the reviews, Victoria, and thanks for the very kind words for my own story.

Your entry is terrific...it's very well told, very effective, and as always, beautifully written. Well done!

Thanks for the review, Victoria. I don't see any problems with your entry. As CC put it, it's a terrific story and stands alone. Besides, it's up to your usual high standards and is clearly a different and superior writing style. Nicely done.

Ray guns are so 1950's, I'm sure if you put your mind to it...

Fair point. My little yellow mind is not sparking too much this month, and I like history too. I read history books for fun. I should be all over this, but I'm not.

Thanks for the review, Victoria. I thought that your well-written story presented an interesting take not only on the race to the moon, but also on the extraordinary lengths that some people go to in order to achieve their dreams.

Hex, I would have been content with just evil, but fabulously evil: such a tremendous compliment. Thank you.

well, mine's up... hopefully a different take on an age old question...
