Discussion -- August 2014 75-Word Writing Challenge

Your wish is my command... http://www.sffchronicles.com/threads/549132/ :D

(but Ashleyne can vote in the photo challenge, as can anyone!)

I've just had a look through the photo challenge. Lots of pretty and interesting photos; I'm still trying to decide which one to vote for.

Thanks for putting me on you shortlist, Perpetual Man.

A gargantuan thanks to, VALIS13, Azzagorn, Johnnyjet and Juliana for the votes :)

Fifty submissions, forty votes. And J-sun, jastius and Serendipity have voted without submitting, thank you very much.

But when you look at the list of:- Boneman, Dirona, farntfar, Groot, HareBrain, Luiglin, Remedy, Sodice, Teresa Edgerton, The Judge, TheDustyZebra and Ursa major, nearly half of the ones who aren't first time, and thus possibly confused about voting are mods. Hmm.

Many thanks to BigJ, who my analytic arts have discovered has given me another vote.

Ah, and Boneman has voted while I was generating this spiel, so 41 votes and a name off the list.

I think Chris is being unfair with his accusatory post. He obviously doesn't appreciate the pressures and stresses those selfless Mods undergo.

It's all very well for him to come here pointing the finger but what he doesn't realise is ---

Oh, wait a minute.

Isn't Chris also a Moderator.

Mm, yes I think he might be.

Then it's just not good enough!

There's poor old Chris battling the trials and tribulations of a Moderator's lot and ---

Ok, ok, I made it. :D I had it all set last night, but I didn't want to stay up later to do the shortlist. And I hate to vote without it (although I'm only jumping on the bandwagon this month).

*Ashleyne -- Razorlips*
springs -- Mine-Crafting
mosaix -- Another Fine Mess...
farntfar -- The Good Wife
Void -- Flash
alchemist -- You Have Been Judged
StilLearning -- Artificial Innocence

Perp -- Psychopathic Perspective
Hoopy -- Captcha
martin321 -- CSI: New Earth

Parson -- Hard Won Innocence
DEO -- Not Guilty is Not Equal to Innocent

ETA (since nobody has come along behind me yet): Oops! I also had a list that belongs here, which told me I have been neglectful and need to thank johnnyjet, Azzagorn, Tywin, mosaix, Phyrebrat, CC and chrispy for the mentions/shortlists/runner-ups/coulda-been-a-contenders, and WordSpinner and Robert Mackay for the lovely votes, and Victoria and Azzagorn for the lovely reviews. Oh, and Boneman for the ...err... "winner" status, which squeaked in just under "best winner" in the trophy run. :D

Thanks for the shortlistings/mentions Parson (thanks also for the kind words -- I'll divulge my not-so-hidden thing after voting ends!) alchemist and Boneman.

Being my usual pernickity self, I have to say I thought some of the pieces missed the genre by being insufficiently SF-y, in that they could just as easily have appeared in a fantasy genre Challenge with no or minimal changes. That grumble aside, some very fine stories, though, as ever, there were some I didn't understand even on third and fourth re-reads. My shortlist:

alchemist -- You Have Been Judged
Ashleyne B. Watts -- Razorlips
chrispenycate -- The Best Intentions
HoopyFrood -- CAPTCHA
Phyrebrat -- Larry's Retirement Gift
Remedy -- Taken in Lights
TheDustyZebra -- Be the Serpent Under't
Victoria Silverwolf -- Jimmy

When I first read Hoopy's poor unknowing robot-boy I was sure I was going to vote for her. Then I read TDZ's serpentine flower. TDZ gets my vote.

TDZ --- Thanks so much for the short listing!

Thanks, TJ! I was pretty sure I was going to vote for Hoopy, too, but I couldn't get Ashleyne's out of my head (and my head was a scary enough place already, thank you very much).

Oh, and I forgot that I was going to add

Remedy -- Taken in Lights

to my shortlist, but I copied from the wrong ...err... copy. Sorry about that!

I had a few on a shortlist, but got it down to two that I loved: Ashleyne's and Parson's. Ashleyne crept in to win by a whisker. Can I have two votes, please? ;)

I think Chris is being unfair with his accusatory post. He obviously doesn't appreciate the pressures and stresses those selfless Mods undergo.

I disagree. Think of it like the Greek gods fighting, with us mortals watching. It's that or a thunder storm brewing overhead, and with the weather recently you place your bets and take your chances.

I hope, Bowler, that you're not suggesting that any of us are gas giants.

Anyway, it's about time I had my final look through the entries to see who might be offered the Ursa vote. (And less than three hours to do it....)

Thank you Boneman, Juliana, Parson, and telford for the mentions.

******

So I have finally voted and chris can take me off his list of non-voters.

Here are my long list, short list, and ***the story I voted for***

Bowler1
Luiglin
Kerrybuchanan
Void
Dirona
Robert MacKay
springs
mosaix
alchemist
Juliana
The Judge
(Not only did I admire the story, but I noticed that she did something very clever that is not apparent at first glance.)

***Parson*** (Because of all the stories I thought it was the most thought provoking)

Someone must be guilty of winning, but who? Only one entrant, but some are not as innocent as they look....
