Fictional Places and Characters That You Wish Were Real.

I can think of more then a few places that Ive encountered in the pages of the books that Ive read that I would love to be real places of which I could travel to . And character(s) that I wish were real people , with whom I could have an adventure or two with. Sometimes , I find myself wishing I could be part the action in the story , interacting with the characters , instead of being the spectator.

What are your choices ? What places in the realm of fiction, would you want most to be real places that you could go to? and what characters do you wish were real ?

Let the whimsy begin.:D

This is a classic example of why people like me love sandbox story-driven computer games. I CAN be a member of the Brotherhood of Steel in Fallout 3 New Vegas....

But my choice would be if Amber were real, from Zelazny's Amber series...and if I had the blood of Amber I could walk shadow. In that case, I could create ANY world I could imagine, even ones wherein I was worshiped as an immortal (which I pretty much would be).

Shangri-La in and all of the characters in Conrad Hilton's Lost Horizon. It seemed like such a wonderful peaceful place to be. :)

I've read Thomas More's Utopia and William Morris's News from Nowhere and wouldn't want to live in or for either to be real, so presumably they both (for me at least) completely fail in their task to create a utopian society.

YES!

Most of the places I read about in SF/F books horrify me. I think the only one that is a place I'd really like to visit and/or live in is Iain M Banks's Culture civilization. I can be lazy and eccentric as well as anyone.

Thinking about it, the vision of the future in Star Trek TNG is pretty much the only one I'd like to be part of. Peace (on Earth, if not in the whole galaxy), equality, no poverty, great technology, etc.

No alcohol - no way! Synthenol, pah! No pain, no gain. :D

Culture universe is better with regards to that. I think there is a quote in Use of Weapons where one of the characters says that he believes the universe will end when the last drop of alcohol is drunk by the last human. Or something to that effect.

A night on the wine without the hangover next day sounds perfect to me! Especially if it also cuts out the other side effects, like drunk texting or snogging inappropriate gentlemen.

:)

To be fair, in the Star Trek universe synthenol could make you do the aforementioned side-effects as well. It's just that you are able to have a clear head and get a big dose of guilt much earlier!

Hmmm... The same goes, I think, for many other ultratech fictional worlds and for many of the same reasons. The Edenist areas of the world of the Night's Dawn trilogy (not during the war, obviously!), the polities of Greg Egan's Diaspora and some of the more pleasant places in the Orion's Arm setting spring to mind - but I'm sure there are others.

Riverworld. Not only is the concept cool, but if it were real I'd wake up there upon my death and be immortal. And apparently live shoulder to shoulder with cool famous people (hopefully not Goering). I hold out a sliver of hope that Farmer knew something we don't :D

Indeed, Riverworld is very cool place. :)

The Syfy channel adapted two fo the books, they decent adaptations. I would have liked to have seen them do tv series based on these novels.:)

Odd the top of my head, the first place I can think of, other than those already mentioned is the Mars of Ian MacDonald's Desolation road / Ares Express. Would love to see those nuclear powered steam trains !
