I love the atmosphere that you create in yours Springs! And I really like your clever take Cat's Cradle =)

I was toying with the idea of just going with what the image suggested to me first- some nice straight-up heroic fantasy...but then I felt a little bit playful and ended up with what I posted >_<

Its good void, the twist was timed perfectly and it was very satisfying. Great job.

Springs, ever since the steam punk challenge I love anything with clockwork in, excellent story!

CC, I suddenly feel smarter after reading yours, it was like education entertainment - brilliant :)

We're going to have so many takes on this picture, I wonder if everyone has avoided high fantasy? But I'm sure we'll have a few by the end though ;)

Edit: Alc, I love that ending - for want of a better word - badass!

:) Thank you springs and Void and Remedy! I've realized, for me, that the 'challenge' part of these writing challenges is to better my own writing...to try and improve over time with every new entry. And I'm very happy I've realized that because WOW the other stories are really wonderful! It's amazing what the terrific writers here can do with a few more words than 75! (But also of course you all work wonders even with that low number!)

springs, I love the atmosphere in yours; this seems very real, and the MCs' situation--and need--is so beautifully drawn. Very fine.

Void, I love it! The twist, as Remedy mentioned, wow! Possibly my favorite challenge twist ever!

Remedy, again the atmosphere here is wonderful. It's a powerful story--you really feel for the characters, and the ending is terrific!

alchemist, a fine take on the challenge! A really interesting story, and again the ending packs a real punch.

Well done all! We can all relax, now that our tales are done, and enjoy the rest of the stories as they roll in!

ps--springs, I'm sorry, I DID make up several words!! ;)

Good on you for making up words. So long as you stay under the word count, you're fine - but my made up word should have been two real words. :(

Thank you for the lovely comments, everyone. I'm glad the atmosphere worked - I struggled with that on the first two tries. Then a mad character appeared. What all my stories need, a mad character*

All great stories. I had a Ha! Moment at Alc's last line.

*may, sadly, be largely true.

Thank you all. I haven't read the others yet but intend to soon, and keep up to date this month.

Thanks Remedy and Cat's Cradle! =)

Remedy, I really love how lyrical the descriptions are in yours, they are just absolutely beautiful.
Alchemist, your character feels so realistic that I'm still on her side at the end- morally compromising!

Well, I've posted, and it's purely fantasy from me. I had the idea almost as soon as I saw the picture, but getting it under 300 words was a bit tricky. I love the entries already posted, and I'm looking forward to seeing what everyone else comes up with.:)

I had loads of spare words, so there's a game in mine. A few games... TJ liked it when we used to hide stuff, right? Have at it.

Tis good enough to be voted the winner for all of Europe, that is. ;) i think the Irish contingent will all find the goody. I didn't get the others, though. I was too busy singing along.

Ah, go on, they will. They will. Go on, now.

There's five things to find. And the end bit is the answers to the five things, the clues to which are in the story.

I like you story so far would like to read more.

That's it I'm sorry to say, just 299 words. It was spawned from a fantasy idea I've had for a while (gasp... did Bowler1 say fantasy???) but I haven't done anything with it. I've been far too busy with proper writing and hard SciFi. Anyway jotun913, welcome and I hope to see you around more.

Hi jotun, thanks and welcome! No, that's it; the point of the 300-word challenge is to tell a story (or a slice of one) in 300 words or less. It's a lot of fun! Feel free to join in; have a look at the honor roll of past champions to get a feel for it. :)

It's easy to feel a little lost here at first; took me ages to find the challenges!

And Bowler... Fantasy? What, no ray guns or nanny bots?:D

Must...hold...off...reading the entries...but I want to so bad. I haven't even tried to think of an idea yet but now that I say that, I'll probably post in 17 minuntes.

Bowler...no ray guns...I can't wait to read that. Next one you will need twice as many.

Good luck, everyone. I'm not sure I'll be able to get in this month.

I'm in one of the worst depressive states I've been in for a long time...and I already know I won't be able to match the other entries.

Alarmed by a certain similarity between Victoria's story and my draft effort, I thought I'd better get mine written up and posted before the rest of it appeared in other entries.

Sorry to hear that, Karn. I hope things pick up soon for you.
