Discussion - March 2015 100-Word Anon Writing Challenge (#5)

The Moomintrolls have just applied for Norwegian nationality on the basis of noisy neighbours.
Hey!

All the neighborhood dogs began howling around that time...
HEY!!!

:) Thank you Juliana!! And very clever, ratsy, I'm smiling! I've actually been thinking about a just-for-fun karaoke thread, over in the lounge...we could attach voice files maybe; 60 seconds...one take, just like in a karaoke bar. Maybe I'll attempt that someday, and see if people are interested. Anyways, on with the challenge!!

* I will be singing this loudly as I do chores around the yard--I'm afraid if I just stand and belt the song, as though I were performing on an opera stage, the poor neighbors would be terrified at the oddness of it all! :)

So singing "Bohemian Rhapsody" while doing chores around the yard won't seem odd at all. Sure. I wonder if this will end up on YouTube. Any of your neighbors have cell phone cameras?

EVERYONE has cell cameras in Finland!:) Land lines are almost non-existent here, and reception is nearly omnipresent...amazing thing, after living in the States.

I could grow a fake mustache in several days ratsy, and should I encore this performance, I will certainly do so! :)

ps--would you folks allow a videotaped version of me singing Bohemian Rhapsody, while wearing a fake mustache, as my entry in this month's challenge? (The genre is horror, after all!:))

pps--oh, the indignity of a moderator becoming the butt of so many jokes! And after my selfless act of public humiliation in an attempt to increase the story count for our cherished new challenge. Shame..I say shame!

(If a karaoke thread does ever emerge at the site, I promise to one day do a serialized version of Bohemian Rhapsody...might take, what, seven one-minute segments? :))

Gotta run! Hoping for more stories!

:) Hi everyone! There's still a bit more than 24 hours left to enter a story. Just a reminder for any who might stop by to take a look at our discussion thread: the genre for our challenge is Horror, the theme is Family; we have 22 wonderful and weird tales entered so far, and we would love to add a few more in the next day. And for anyone who can't make the writing deadline I'll mention that voting is open to all, and begins just after midnight tomorrow. Please consider taking a look at the entries over in the story thread, and letting us know what you think, with a vote.

It's been a blast moderating the challenge this month! Thank you to everyone involved for a fun event! I hope to be posting more stories soon, CC

I'm thinkin' the biggest blast should
have been you moderating it, but that completely paled in the shadow of your glowing rendition of Bohemian Rhapsody!

Actually, I installed the karaoke some time ago, at http://www.sffchronicles.com/threads/43501/, but the site does not accept attachments in any audio format, so to do what you want you'll have to transfer it to YouTube and install a link I suspect this is so Brian can avoid all the problems of performing rights, as he said when we first met almost ten years ago that he was intending to add a music showcase - someday.

Pops in and checks all the mixer channels work, and dust hasn't clogged the tweeters.

Greetings all! Well, at this moment, as I type here in Finland, it is 12:25am...it is also 10:25 GMT, which means our challenge closes for new stories in approx. 1.5 hours.

I will be staying up to attempt the creation of a voting poll at midnight GMT. Here is where I've fallen down as host of this challenge...I had meant to post earlier today to ask about the procedure for the guessing portion of our event. I have read through comments in the discussion threads for the last two challenges to try and figure a good way of handling things, and I will make a suggestion, and I would truly appreciate it if anyone who might read this would let me know if they think things should go a different direction than what I will suggest.

So, after reading through those earlier comments, this is what I've come up with: I will create a voting poll at midnight GMT; I will try to create the poll so that the names of the voters will appear next to the stories they've chosen; once the poll is up, I will post a randomized list of the authors who've participated, for the guessing phase..there will be a red-herring name entered in the list, to add a bit of spice to the guessing (and should some new member whose user name is 'red-herring' enter the challenge before the deadline, I will point this out to the body Chrons, to help avoid confusion:)); I will mention in a post that guessing is completely optional; and I will try very hard to make a post for anyone who has posted guesses to let them know how many correct guesses they've made. Voting is open to all Chrons members, and the poll is open till midnight GMT on the 22nd. And finally, after midnight of the 22nd, I will post the challenge winner's name, and a list matching authors to their stories.

I hope that sounds okay? My one concern with separating the voting and guessing is that, should we do so, once the voting is over, interest might shift away from our challenge, and over to the 75 worder...people may forget to come back and guess at the 100 worder.

Yikes, I'm tired...I hope the poll-creation works for me. :) Best of luck to all in the voting, and I'll see you again after midnight, GMT, CC

Can we do our guessing and comments in this thread, and voting in the voting thread?

That's a good question, Cascade! I hadn't considered a separate voting thread; we hadn't done that in the past. Quick thought is that we would have a separate voting thread only if we were separating voting and guessing--for example, if we have the voting round now, and then the guessing round, say, in 4-5 days. If we are voting and guessing at the same time, to me it makes sense to combine our shortlists and voting with our guessing, all here in the discussion thread, as we've done before.

Does that make sense? Sorry all, I should have posted about this twelve hours ago; it was such a busy day!
