Thank you for the mini review Titanium Ti! Very much appreciated. :D

I really hate this part, because each and every story I read has merit. I would vote for them all if I could, but that rather defeats the purpose! So, I finally managed to whittle it down to my longlist, shortlist and votes*:

TitaniumTi, Juilana*, Alc, Victoria, LittleStar, Remedy*, Robert McKay, Phyrebrat, ratsy, Mr O, Sancho, Starbeast, TDZ (both Starbeast and TDZ were very close runners-up for me), and of course, The Judge*

Really strong entries this challenge; it was harder than usual to make cuts. So many stories were deserving of votes, but we can vote only for three, so here goes:

Honorables:
Ihe, Mad Alice, LittleStar, TDZ

Ones-I-Wish-I-Could-Also-Give-Votes-To:
Juliana, HazelRah, alchemist, Cascade, Victoria, Phyrebrat, Venusian Broon, The Judge

Votes:
Void--loved the atmosphere in this one, and the imagery.
Starbeast--Wow! Just...wow! This made me very happy to read.
Remedy--Wonderful, and beautifully written, and really moving. Easily my favorite of the challenge.

Thanks so much for the mention, TitaniumTi! :) And best of luck to all participants in the voting, CC

Wow, what a surprising start to this Saturday. Thank you so much for the votes and kind words, Victoria, Kerry, Jo, Titanium and CC! :)

I just wanted to say I haven't forgotten my reviews. I'm cleaning the duck pond then I should be able to finish the last 10 later this afternoon (y)

It's far from being a mere formality, given the pool of candidate stories....

* Wonders: Should there be a Lake button...? *

Take the groan as a given. Yes, I hope he doesn't strain himself mentally. I'd hate to see him quack up.

This month I was attracted by the strange and the unusual, so a handful of stories really stood out for me instinctively.

However I would like to mention those that were pipped to the post (by whatever measure my subconscious was using to try and judge such a large number of excellent entries.)

So I feel I must mention, Phyrebrat's echoes of Pet Sematary, Mosaix's bittersweet elergy to a dying earth, Moonbat's brilliant blues jam (Second time in a week you've just missed my vote by a whisker - sorry!) and TJ's elegantly crafted fairy tale.

However the three I chose stood out just that bit higher on first reading:

Glen's Kansa - I just enjoyed the language and the dirty visceral feel, Dumpspotting perhaps.
Kerrybuchanan's Cornucopia - A lovely delicate alien tale that didn't see them trying to take us over or make us better. Brilliant.
Ursa's Decision Tree - I'm always a sucker for a bit of multi-verse tomfoolery. Even if it is a depressing conclusion.

In the spirit of giving out made up awards, after receiving one in this months 75, I'd also like to award Starbeast the 'best Red Dwarf fan fic'. It did make me smile!

Uh oh.

Right. Here’s the thing. I’ve voted for the 300 wd comp, and I’ve only used one vote. Now my vote went to what I think is the best story, and, in my view, was a full star (in a five star ranking system that anyone familiar with the ABC Movie Show will be familiar with, except I don’t use half stars) above the rest.

However, if I had remembered that the 300 wd comp offered two other votes, I would have used them. Not least because of the raging controversy that practically melted down my wi-fi router last time someone only used one vote.

Hell’s teeth. I can’t take it back. There is no option to add other votes. Let’s just live with it. I’m letting you know ahead of time if anyone reckons I’m unfair or whatever, well, you’re welcome to your opinion I guess.
Moving on. My favourites in this lovely month of stories were:
  • TitaniumTi - family ties.
  • Cat’s Cradle - an earlier age of writing.
  • Juliana - metal dragon.
  • Ihe - astonishing wild landscape
  • Cascade - funny farm.
  • Victoria Silverwolf - vote winner.
  • Remedy - strange gifts.
  • DG Jones - a story with deep roots.
  • Phyrebrat - drawrings.
  • Venusian Broon - Paradox.
  • The Storyteller - Bugs!
  • Kerrybuchanan - a moving feast

Hurrah for flash fiction! It’s almost as good as the Ashes.

Right. With a quick nod in the direction of my honourable mention, I move toward the array of levers.

With a pause; something akin to a dreamer awaking in front of an orchestra, baton in hand...

Juliana - clear winner by a distance of 'lots'.

TitaniumTi - for intriguing me.

Mad Alice - because you made something inside, that normal dozes through this bit, sit up and smile.

A close fourth place in a field of three, my commiserations to johnnyjet.

Hmmm. I notice a lack of 'ly' on the 'normal' above... Strange.

But, at least, consistent...

Thanking me, spellcheckingproofslacker, for not spotting the heinous typo in my own offering until after the voting started. LOL. Somedays I really shouldn't be let near a keyboard.

A. Fare Wells – Lost in the Brambles

With a rhythmic progression, AFW feeds us a character full of mystery and misdirection. Answers are contradicted and questions get rebounded like a squash ball, until delivery of an imaginative ending. Commendable Chaos

Sancho – Saint Peter of Tau Ceti e

Using only a handful of well-selected words, Sancho provides numerous inventions and designs that can clearly be pictured. The inclusion of a biblical nod gives perspective on the whole story and a pause for thought. Gregarious Gateway

Mosaix – Moving On…

Moving on… is an incredibly comfortable and soothing conversation that welcomes you in and settles you down for a story. The characters’ discussion gives a realistic approach to a futuristic concept. Strength lies in the beautiful painting at the end. Precious Precipitation

Starbeast - Kryton Discovers a 1980's Rap CD called, "Metal Tree - The Gathering"

When it’s cold outside, with no kind of atmosphere – you need SB’s cheerful parody to pick you up and remind you of hilarious times spent with the RD crew. Cleverly pinning down individual attributes we can enjoy this tale with a fresh mango juice! Reminiscent Rendition

Tim James – Ashes to the Winds

Knowing that something sinister is approaching in Perp’s story, doesn’t make it any less terrifying when it surfaces. The malice of the faceless growth is palpable as we join the last humans in their countdown to a total desert. Dormant Destruction

How lovely to wake up this morning to so many votes and kind comments. Perfect end to my beach vacation. :)
I'll wait to vote until I get home on Wednesday and have plenty of time to peruse at leisure (funny how little time we have on holiday!). But I wanted to say thank you to Victoria, Kerry, Rafellin and Droflet (Droflet? Did I miss something while I was away, Drof, or have I had too many umbrella drinks lately?) for their votes and lovely comments, and also thanks to Glen, Ti and CC for the mentions. Ti and CC, how nice to be on your 'almost' list. :)

A vote! Thank you, Rafellin.

Thank you for the mentions, Droflet, Kerrybuchanan and Glen.

Getting a vote and mentions in such strong competition is truly encouraging.

Oh yeah, Juliana. While you were away I killed the other guy. We no longer speak his name. Call me Drof.
