DISCUSSION -- July 2015 75-word Writing Challenge

Time I got my own votes in. Here's my shortlist:

Hex - Hell yeah! I love it when a plan comes together. Those crumbbums fell for the old switcheroo in the long grass - oldest trick in the book!
Venusian Broon - if there's an unfunny story about human sacrifice with willy gags thrown in, then I've not read it.
Littlestar - oodles and oodles of time and effort clearly went into this. The more I read it, the more I love it.
Mr Orange - right up my alley, this. A mystery we have to piece together, with something sinister lurking just below the surface. Would love to see this as a longer piece.
Ratsy - another oh-so-clever story. There's so much implied history and scope crammed in here, and the character of the king is rounded and real.
Moonbat - simple but clever combination of formatting and psychology ensures the reader is the one being deceived. And did MP778 write that last paragraph, compounding the illusion?
Harebrain - witty and wargish, a dark tale of revenge and attempted murder that ends with a boy getting a pet puppy. More stories should end this way.
Chrisp - this fairly skipped along to a JJ Cale-style Cajun beat. Our host with the most turns the rules of hospitality on their head to satisfy his appetite for blood. Only the occasional blip in flow, but overall a dark and lyrically bluesy tale by the Bayou. Would be intrigued to hear it set to music. EDIT: by music I mean bottleneck slide guitar, not string quartet or bangin' Eurobeatz.
Alchemist - That crock of gold at the end of the rainbow turned out to be a crock of sh...enanigans abound as the Eurozone economy problems hit, inevitably, the ends of rainbows everywhere. But you can't fault the ingenuity of those little rapscallions. I like their gumption.

In the end it was a tough decision, with Chrisp probably in third place, Littlestar in second and Ratsy bagging the vote at the top. It was a great story, full of depth and possibility.

Too many to do a long list so I'll just do the short list, very short list and vote*

Cascade
Ratsy.
Moonbat
Culhwch
Harebrain*
Mosaix
Alchemist

I hummed and hah'd for a ages between HB, Mosaix and Alc but HB got the vote in the end. Some brilliant stories again this month.

It's funny how much of a roller coaster these challenges are: last month a win and this month barely a mention. It's one of the things I love about the challenges.

Ever watch Masterchef? I've never seen a cook get the advantage of picking the ingredients and win. (n)

Thanks for the shortlistings johnnyjet and DG Jones

DG, glad you liked the mystery. I was afraid it might be too much work!

Strange isn't it? I think that, maybe, knowing the theme doesn't stimulate the old grey cells quite as much as seeing something entirely new and unexpected.

What to do when your initial shortlist looks very-very similar to a snapshot of the polling thread, *sigh*...
I had come into this month deciding that, finally, I'd whittle my lists down to ten stories, no more; it proved impossible. So here, after many painful cuts, are my lists:

Honorable mentions:
Michael Coorlim, Victoria, LittleStar, Mad Alice, Remedy, HazelRah, Glen, HareBrain, mosaix, TDZ
Semi-finalists:
Cascade, mosaix, alchemist, chrispenycate

Finalists:
Venusian Broon, DG Jones

It was so close--I went back and forth over the last 24 hours. VB's story is beautifully written, and has a remarkably nice punchline, but the emotional impact of DG's story is powerful, and in the end could not be denied--vote to DG. Well done everyone!

And thanks sooo much to Glen and Remedy for the listings! I expected nothing from this month's entry, but the two listings were greatly appreciated! :)

Thank you Juliana, and Kerry for the mentions. And thanks so much to DG for the vote.

There were so many awesome stories this month so my list is a little longer than normal

willwallace
Venusian Broon
Victoria Silverwolf
DG Jones
johnnyjet
holland
HazelRah
Culhwch
Tim James
TDZ

I almost felt weird about voting for the person who voted for me this month, but DG's story was just so good. It had the perfect feel to it for the theme and was sad, and touching at the same time. Great work DG and you can now run away with it!

Well, I've finally made it to vote. I was afraid I wouldn't make it. My dalliances with internet have been heavily restricted since I've been on holiday this past month. Here it is:

Short
:
Venusian Broon
David Doherty-Jebb
Mad Alice
HazelRah
Moonbat
HareBrain
Alchemist
Remedy

Very Short:
DG Jones
Michael Coorlim
Culhwch

Vote:
Mosaix. Loved the humour and light-heartedness of something that is very much a real deception in today's modern (and not so modern) world.

PS: thanks to the few who mentioned my story. It was minimalist beyond exaggeration (in itself another exaggeration :D), and I didn't expect anything.

Hooray, this month I got in before the last minute and had time to make a proper shortlist.

Michael Coorlim -- Sisters
Luiglin -- No Fairy Tale
VB -- The Last Evil Adventure
Mad Alice -- Lady's Choice
DGJ -- Go Softly, My Dear, Go Softly
Ratsy -- Fated to the Throne
Culhwch -- The Famed Golden City of Imalkah
Alc -- Diversification
Tim James -- Freedom
TDZ -- The Sting of Death

I thought all of those were strong (and many others barely less so) but in the end Michael Coorlim gets my vote.

Big thanks to @Kerrybuchanan and @David Doherty-Jebb for voting for me, and to everyone who listed my story.

*Michael Coorlim -- Sisters*

Wow, you guys. More votes, and more mentions. Thank you so much Teresa & Ashleyne, I'm flabbergasted and flattered (and it's nice to get a couple of votes from the ladies :D), and to TDZ and the great HB for the shortlistings.

Not to tempt fate or anything, but I'm starting to allow myself to feel a little confident... :)
