DISCUSSION -- July 2015 75-word Writing Challenge

Congratulations DG.

Also tons of thanks to Ursa and Mosaix for the totally unexpected votes.
How could I resist?

Star Trek entangled with Asimov's Laws, and (best of all) counting starting at zero, because what makes a robot special isn't the hardware, it's the software...! :)

Congrats DG, that was just an impressive number of votes you got, go celebrate now! :D

what makes a robot special isn't the hardware, it's the software...!

This is very true - that's where all the really clever stuff is ;)

And thanks for the messages guys. I think I've managed 2 or 3 votes in all the time I've been here prior to this month, so it's been a pretty unexpected (and lovely) surprise :D

Congrats, DG!!

Ooh, mentions, shortlists, and even a vote! I fared much better this month than I thought, given I had zero inspiration and a deadline looming. Many thanks to all, and a special thanks to Juliana!

Big congratulations DG, a really excellent story and a worthy winner to romp home.

And a Broon shout out to the swarm of people who mentioned my story, especially willwallace, Bowler and Mr Orange for the vote, but also the other thirteen peeps (!!!) that mentioned my little bit of fun. I will put Juliana's 'killer last line' trophy up on the mantelpiece.

In truth my own story irritated me a bit, as after I had posted it, a minute or so after the 'edit' function had disappeared, when I noticed that I had forgotten an possessive apostrophe and therefore just couldn't amend it. If others noticed that and marked me down for it - good for you, I deserved it! Always check and re-check and re-re-check your work is the moral of that. :)

As for rounds of drinks, I'm surprised DG that you didn't know that rule! When Phyrebrat enticed me to get back into the competitions he made it pretty clear on that point when he delivered the full set of unabridged Chron's rules for competitions to me - it appears in the winners obligations section (volume 3, pages 104-127). :D

Congrats DG! Well done!

Thanks again to anyone who mentioned or voted for me this month. I think I set some personal records, so for that I'm happy. And thanks Cul for the sneak vote :)

Looking forward to seeing what you come up with DG

Massive congratulations @DG Jones

Simplicity is genius and your story was a simply genius take on this months theme. Well done.

Congrats to everybody else who entered. The bar was set high this month and I think everyone posted really well written and varied stories, all were a joy to read :)

Roll on August! :D

Congratulations D.G. that was a very fine story indeed.

Here is my disqualified story: 76 words. ---- I went back after it was disqualified and counted it, 76, and then I had Word Perfect count the story, 75. Then I had WP count the words in each line; total 76. I don't know what's going on, but anyway.....

------------

An Honorable Deception

Captain Harrington looked at her cards, 3 and 7. She sighed and thought; “Junk again.” She was the short stack. Unless she won, Admiral Hemphill’s Gravity Lance with its shortcomings, would become standard equipment for her squadron.

The dealer turned a 5. Honor made her play. She bet big. Hemphill called. A 4 was turned. She bet bigger; Hemphill called. An 8 was turned. Honor slightly raised an eyebrow, “All in.” Hemphill caught the tell “Fold.”

--------------

When I was thinking about deception, I thought about how bluffing plays a part in military revenuers. You want your enemy to think he knows something when in fact he is wrong. I then thought about my favorite character, Honor Harrington, and thought about a story in which she shows he tactical genius. The problem was that kind of a story took way too much background to make work. I was watching poker on television, and all of a sudden, voila! A story I liked a lot. ----- Obviously a lot meant one word too many. (Sigh!)
