Has @Gonk the Insane gone yet? I thought he was just agreeing with me that we'd both submitted late on the last day.
My bad - did a complete misread - have edited post above - can't edit so have posted new list below.

Apologies to Gonk the Insane (grovel grovel)

Can now edit post above... I really don't get the hang of this system... goes away shaking head in confusion...

Thanks, all. I'm not too worried. The Talent Universe SF stuff is a bit niche, the Solar Alliance had a much weaker start than now and the Fantasy novel a bit young. Next is to see what my editor comes up with. Some stuff I'll hold back and only submit, I'll SP other stuff when it's polished enough.

Best wishes for anyone waiting to hear.

Thanks for the welcome Serendipity and good luck to all those still waiting, also good luck with other next steps to all those who have heard already. This is making me think what my next step should be too.

If you reject my submission, my story will become better written than you can possibly imagine!

I find your lack of proof-reading disturbing.

[Vader does have the best quotes. I was contemplating writing a blog about how he's actually an inspiration for the disabled and those of religious minorities. Second highest in the empire despite suffering serious medical conditions *and* being almost the only practitioner of his religion. Most impressive].

Is it a good sign I haven't been rejected yet? You know, not as in, there is still hope, but in the sense that they didn't automatically assign it to toilet paper?

Nope, not yet. There's a detailled tracker going on on Absolute Write and only about a third have had responses yet. They seem to be thick and fast at the moment, though.

Bah. Huge commiserations. :(

Take the delay as there's some potential in your story rather thinking it was total sh*t, because the execution wasn't polished so much that it shined.

I'm happy enough to be rejected. (I had tweaked a murder mystery to make it paranormal and it sounded more like a rampant porn novel.) The wordage I sent in were good though. Over the last twelve months I've gone off the idea of traditional publishing anyway. Listening to the whole 7p a book and being ignored business I realised I don't need to sell anywhere near as many books (so less marketing to do) as a self publisher.

Sorry to hear it, Anya. I expect to be close behind. Out of curiosity, when did you sub?

About ten minutes before the deadline closed.

It's likely that some to many rejected stories will be "far better" than any or most or some accepted. Because there isn't any objective measurement. It's ultimately the prejudices, expectations and perception of readers / editors etc at Hodderscape.

I went for a nosy on AW's thread after Jo's comment somewhere above. Interestingly, all the responses they have logged so far are rejections and all were delivered on a Thursday, Friday or Monday. Based on that, I'm going to make a conscious effort NOT to check my inbox* over the next two days.

*I suspect the effort will last until second breakfast....
