Oh good.
I hate it when people become "Silent keys".

Not sure in what way that is good, @Ray McCarthy. My 88 year old dad (who has dementia) was rushed to hospital last week with liver failure and my 86 year old mum has had a fall and fractured her spine. I am trying to coordinate their social and medical care whilst separated from them by the Irish Sea, at the same time as coping with a high dependency, multi-ASD family here at home. I'm sorry if I disappointed you by becoming a "Silent key", whatever that is, but please don't make assumptions about people. I'm hardly out partying here.

Sorry ... I only meant it's good you are alive, not about the situations. Which I can only offer rather empty sympathy for, rather than any practical help.

I'm sorry if I disappointed you by becoming a "Silent key"
Silent key = Late, deceased, dead. Applied to Radio Operators, even if they never used morse. You mentioned "Radio Silence".
So I'm glad you aren't one. Which is what I said earlier. I think you took the complete opposite meaning to that intended.

Man down!

Got the standard rejection through today:

Hello,

Thank you very much for sending us your novel during our open submissions period. I’m sorry to say that we will not be moving forward with your project, but thank you again for submitting it.

Due to the huge number of submissions we received, we regret that are unable to provide personalized feedback. But I want to let you know that all the readers were very impressed with your work and this decision was not an easy one for us to make.

Throughout the open submissions process we have been astonished, overwhelmed and wholly delighted with the imagination, talent and ability of the 1500 people who submitted manuscripts to us. Please accept our congratulations, on behalf of the entire team here at Hodder, on your commitment and drive. It’s no easy thing to finish a novel and you have everything in the world to be proud of.

Good luck with your writing career!

All the best,

Anne Perry and the Hodderscape Team

Good luck to everyone still waiting!(y)

Just got my rejection.
Commiserations, David. Hopefully next time...

Hello, Chronsfolk. Tis I! I have not returned (I'll not be staying... rage issues...) Anywho, was Googling the Hodderscape window and saw the threads here and on AW.

I am also out, like... gout. (I dunno, what else rhymes with out? Nobody wants gout, right?)

Locke & Co (my very unfinished WiP) got the bog standard rejection, as posted by Gonk above. However, TBM (a full of which is currently with the Donald Maas agency - I'm terrified, and expecting my rejection any time soon), got a super lovely personal rejection.

Dear Emma,

Thank you very much for submitting The Beautiful Man to us – we read it and really enjoyed it, but ultimately decided it wasn’t quite right for us and are going to pass on it. But I wanted to let you know that our readers were all very impressed with the pacey, breathless speed of the prose, how quickly and well you established your characters and the central conflicts, and how easily the story reads. These are not easy skills to master and they suggest that you definitely have what it takes to make it, so please don’t be down-hearted about this email. You are clearly very talented and I would not be at all surprised to see your name on the cover of a book in the future!

Best of luck with your writing career!

Take care,

Anne & the Hoddescape Team

So, just wanted to thank my beta readers for that, especially the couple I've had recently as it's only got better. If I get good news from Donald Maas, I'll be back. Unlikely though. :D

(PS. if anybody wants to contact me for a natter, you can do so via Twitter, or ask Divbrat for my email addy)

Ta rah!

Spout. Or you could go Yorkshire and say 'nowt'.

[Also, welcome back, even if only briefly].

Gonk, that wasn't totally a standard email unless they were sending out two different standard emails - my two rejections don't have the sentence "But I want to let you know that all the readers were very impressed with your work and this decision was not an easy one for us to make". Mine goes after 'personalized feedback' into 'But due to the huge number...' So that sentence does look like a personal response.
