Discussion thread -- September 2015 75-word Writing Challenge

Tim – Who is this character? I mean he enters the challenges with the verve and attitude of someone who has been doing it for years, yet has little more than a month or two under his belt. I liked that Perp fellow better anyway.

Kerry – Could this be the last man alive in the system? You can ju7st see him digging away, a lost soul, serving, biding his time only for that twist of fate that leaves him ensnared. All things considered though, he might be in the better place.

Phyre – Justice meted out decisively and at speed. Also rather harsh one thinks. Is this what we have to look forward to? Probably. Great idea it had a certain ‘feel’ to it, that made it work well.

StilLearning – A nicely inverted tale, where we see redemption snatched away at the last possible moment. Good characterisation, Loki as a trickster god was spot on, and the updating of everything to a cyber age was a great idea.

Grim – For every great achievement, or invention there is a downside; the things that people want to manipulate and corrupt just because they can. A double whammy as the world seems doomed, but is saved, then doomed again.

Cul – The things that we do, that then get out of hand. When people do malicious things It is sometimes just to prove they can with no thought to the consequences. What defines them is how they react…

MB – an offered future where the individual is able to eradicate his memories to hide truths from all those around and themselves. But more frighteningly is the ability to put back what has been lost…

mosaix – Another form of justice is offered, showing a future where it is terrifying and perhaps anything but just. The impression that a innocent man, found guilty might become dangerous is probably frighteningly real

TDZ – An updating of classic fairy tales given a cybertastic spin that works really well. The idea that there might be some form of cyber child care is believable. That someone (or something) might try to pervert it, is just as believable. Unfortunately.

TJ – There have always been those that work behind the curtain, in secrecy and darkness. But they cannot go forever, so who trains those that have to replace them, and what if someone develops a moral backbone?

Alc – Catches the surreal/real feel of a virtual reality quite well, how it could all run out of control so easily. Who knows whether pulling that trigger might be putting things right, or might be making an either bigger problem.

Ursa – What can I say? Genius as always, but worthy of a BIG groan at the same time.

Alright, jacked in and ready to meld, there's always that tricky bit of disassociation...

> We're in.

> Looking over this cyber-sphere it's difficult, so many things to look at and admire; but after crunching the raw data through a few transforms and perturbations there were a bunch of sophisticated routines that really stood out: their structural ingenuity sparkling with energy and cheeky hacker humour:

>Cat's Cradle, Ashleyne B. Watts, Glen, DG Jones, Mad Alice, The Judge

>But I identified a few kernels, deep level code, where I thought there was something even better going on. I'd go over them and find my output going off in all tangents. Slippery little buggers but a joy to hack.

>Victoria Silverwolf, Holland and Ursa Major.

>One of them was the source, the prime, the one that would solve this little conundrum.

>........Found it.

>Holland's The Redemption and the Redemption.

>Lovely bit of dual tracked code, so neat, but so powerful.

> I'm having that.

> Copying..........

Choice made, democracy to service - take the program and make my vote.

Two votes already! Many thanks to HazelRah and Venusian Broon :)

Thanks for the nice reviews, Mme. Silverwolf and Sir Tim.

One of the drawbacks of waiting (or lacking inspiration) until the end is that the creature one creates might be loosed into the challenge, only to find others have already laid claim to its niche. So, after delivering the newborn 75-worder, I then finally read first the other offerings then the discussion with no small level of trepidation, hoping that mine is different enough (not to garner comments or votes, just to be different).

Anyhoo, just like the elves with Bilbo's verse, "we'd better have it again". Time for the re-read, and (cue sepulchral music)...the VOTE. :D

I do the same thing!!

Ah ya, what a great month.

There some veritable humdingers in there, some real cyberdiamonds.

This little lot made my shortlist:

Victoria
Robert Mackay
Holland
Kerry
TDZ

And it came to three in the final:

Mr Orange
Ratsy
Cul

I loved the cocksure, hacksurfer MCs in Ratsy's and Cul's tales, and the razor-sharp writing in both efforts.

But Mr Orange's Korma Chameleon won it for me - sheer brilliance: a clever twist on the theme and genre, a belting, laugh-out-loud payoff, and it even made me want to order a curry the evening I read it. And there ain't much higher praise than that.

Must... resist... curry... at... least... until...rugby.... tomorrow....

Bowler1 does a quick draw of his CURRY GUN - which is actually a RAY GUN that stuns the victim, ahem... DG Jones, with wonderful curry aroma's and tastes. Works best when the victim, ahem... DG Jones, is hungry.

ZZzzzzaaaappppPPPPP

Why resist, it's fat Friday - stuff yer face full.

I can't help feeling that if all the world's military arsenal were replaced with Curry Guns it'd be a much happier place.

And I could make a small fortune selling off some of my stockpile. And yes, I also have a custard gun.

Voting has been a bit slow.... Watch out, you could get blasted with a whole three course meal if your not careful!
