Discussion Thread -- December 2015 75-word Writing Challenge

Hex (Naughty) – A rather tantalising piece that might be a little risqué in places, I mean bustiere of all things! That being said it is always good to see someone not get diverted from a path of action, no matter what is offered.

Ursa (Good – A friend for Thread Bear) – As one would expect a wonderful array of wordplay and double meanings; ultimately a nice little story with a double meaning running throughout and a great payoff.

Mad Alice – (Good – Supernatural DVD’s) – Fortune favours the foolish, or perhaps the brave. Those who have the courage to face down Old Nick and win, even if it involves a bit of mechanical trickery, deserves all they can get.

StilLearning (Good – An orange) – No matter how unexpected something might be, using the same modus operandi might actually become familiar, leaving the unexpected as the surprised…

TJ (Naughty) – If there is a lesson to be learned here it is to always see things through to the end, because you might not know what you have missed. Of course this tale is a paradox, because if he had read the note to the end he might not have gone to the door and so not been in any danger….

Well there it is. A portion of my list, a snapshot of all the good and bad little girls that I keep my eyes on during my travels.

I hope those good boys and girls appreciate their presents and play with them well, and although it goes against my nature I do have to admit that I happen to know, that sometimes, just sometimes the naughty ones have a lot more fun.

I mean, I can tell you about a nurse called Matilda, now she was soooo naug…

Anyway, it’s a busy night!

Where’s the whip? What do you mean Matilda still… errr.

On Rudolph, on Dancer and Prancer!

Ho! Ho! Ho!

Thank you Droflet.

I've had a terrible head cold that has laid me up for a few days. I have a glowing red nose, seasonal, but annoying and painful too. I have battery packs fully charged and ready to go (from lack of use these last few days), and I'm waiting on a Santa fly by to let loose. If your missing all your presents tomorrow, you can have them back for a small release fee - heehee!

I'll be back to cast my vote later and merry Christmas everyone.

Once again there were some truly wonderful entries and I enjoyed them all. From the Bear's wordplay, to Chrispy's mindbending genius.

However for me there were two which just blew me away from the moment I read them.

So HazelRah and Titanium Ti take a bow.

In the end it was Hazel who just procured my vote, the emotional kick at the end of the story, combined with the double meaning of the words was just achingly beautiful.

A quick thanks to Drof for putting me on the thin line, and a huge Yo ho ho, to Judderman for the stealth, and greatly appreciated vote.

Thankyou hope writes! Thankyou Victoria! Oh! Giftie!! Ta Tim James! And thankyou for the lovely review!
Claps her hands over the Christmas prezzies of Lovey reviews. :)

Steampunk usually gets a 'meh' response from me, but the entries in this challenge are superb.

My favorites are:
Bowled Over - Droflet
Harbinger in the Smoking Room - HareBrain
Gifts For the Wise - LittleStar
His Every Need... - Mosaix
Stand - Langadune

The price of progress (and glue!) - Bowler1
And those who do.... - farntfar
A Saint by any other Name - Mr Orange
Paint & Powder - Bob Senior
Taken For a Ride - Jo Zebedee
Grate Expectations - Ursa Major

My vote, for a perfect gem of a story (also industrial-quality diamond, of course), goes to Paint & Powder, by Bob Senior.

Christmas is a fitting time for steampunk, and it was good to bring out Jenkins and Smythe for another run, and another port.

Great stories, one and all. My favourites:
  • Cat’s Cradle - mmm, gravy…
  • HareBrain - quick draw
  • Victoria Silverwolf - don’t panic
  • Gone the Insane - be careful what you wish for
  • Alex The G and T - mmm, cognac
  • hopewrites - the Comfy Chair
  • DG Jones - I want to be…
  • johnnyjet - clapped his hands
  • Bowler1 - !
  • Lenny - onomatoepoeia
  • farntfar - ayup
  • Mr Orange - A low rumble…
  • Starbeast - (sniff)
  • TitaniumTi - merry christmas to all
Bowler1 got my vote - for nailing Steampunk and the Unexpected. !

Merry Christmas everyone, and a Happy New Year!

Got my short list down to twenty... still pecking away at it.

Thanks for the mention Glen, always a pleasure to know one's words have tickled a fancy or two :)

Marry Christmas all!

Thankyou so much for the vote Tim! It's a lovely surprise... It almost feels like Christmas or something :giggle:

Time to get my voting in before all the fun/hecticity starts tomorrow. I really enjoyed all of the stories this month, though most of my favourites I think followed the Festive feel... Though my vote goes to a decidedly un-festive story by Bowler. I thought this was quite heartbreaking and well written, a thoroughly deserved vote for me :)

My mentions this month are going to:-
Ratsy
Robert McKay
Glen
Hazelrah
Juliana
Bob
TDZ

Well done to everyone for entering and Merry Christmas, team :)

I felt two entries really hit the mark of Steampunk and unexpected. Bowler1's The price of progress(and glue), was one, Bob Senior's Paint and Powder the other. By a hair Bob's won my vote, but it was a tough decision.

So little time, thanks to...CHRISTMAS! First and foremost, happy holidays to everyone!
Next, tough competition this month! Very nice choices, StilLearning.
So, my lists:
Honorables: Victoria, LittleStar, Hex, Glen, HazelRah
Semi-finalists: Robert Mackay, DG Jones, Saharren, farntfar, Ursa, TJ
Finalists: HareBrain, Alex, Lenny

Vote: I suspected I'd vote for HareBrain from the very first reading, and my suspicions were proven correct! That was really cool, HB! :)

Well done all! Best of luck with the voting, and a safe and happy new year to all! CC

Aha… he tried to stop me… excuse me? Alright, you. I’ll start again shall I? Fine.

Aha… he tried to stop Minion hacking into his account by blowing his CP… what now? Really? Fine… by blowing his PC up.

That didn’t last long. He’s now back on line and so am I.

We Two Kings by one Phyrebrat – The Rustplains? Didn’t we fight a battle there against the Last But One Alliance of Men and Elves back in my cyclopean fiery eye phase? Seems to be have been taken over now by Silvery Snobs; they’ve got to be elves. Now my only concern is this secret weapon called myrrh. That doesn’t smell right.

With Apologies to Blitzen by one Culhwch – Clockwork Elves? I bet I could wind them up. What? Look that one was funny. What do you mean predictable. At least we came down in the end to the pure evil in this tale… lawyers.

Don’t You Cry by one TheDustyZebra – You should never knock innovation. Let them keep trying and trying. Then when they ultimately fail and their future lies tatters of imagination and scraps of persistence… then you can truly gloat.

Taken for a Ride by one Jo Zebedee – I have to say that I had nothing to do with the ex-wife that came to visit. She looked way too scary for me, all wild eyed and thin lipped. Minion helped out though. He can never resist a wild eyed, thin lipped banshee out for vengeance.

The Promised Land by one Parson – Clean air is a myth. There’s no such thing. All air is polluted by tiny creatures called Franklepipsqueaks. They take root in your noses and swing on the hairs. Take a close look in the mirror and take a deep breath through your nose and then watch those hairs dance.

Lacquer Blue by one Hex - Minion, I want a band of these Angelines. They could be perfect sexy shock troops, all bustierey, straddley, whiry and staby.

Grate Expectations (An extract from Locomotives in Love) by one Ursa major – As any other Dark Lord, I love a bit of innuendo. The fun that can be had with the simplest of words followed by a well-timed ‘Oh Matron’ can make anyone of a certain proclivity for dodgy English humour grin inanely. Adding it to trains though is a track too far.

Fortune’s Fool by one Mad Alice – Never trust St. Nick. He’s an evil son-of-a-bit. Trust me, I should know. So if you get the chance to do him in… take it. Never give him the opportunity to talk his way out.

Expect the Spanish inquisition by one StilLearning – I like teddies… especially on witch elves… that frilly pink silk over velvety blue skin… what? Oh, not that sort of teddy? Right, sorry got side tracked. Ahem, yes, naughty bear that kills. I like.

Risk of Lost Profits = Certainty of Lost Prophet by one The Judge - I think the quote here should be ‘If you build it, they will come’. Pity he never thought about that one. What? I know it’s the wrong quote but it wouldn’t fit in the singular would it?

Hope everyone had a lovely Christmas!

I really enjoyed the festive theme that snuck though this month.

First of all, my honourable mentions go to:
TitaniumTi
Culhwch
Harebrain
Ratsy
Littlestar
Droflet

And for the vote itself I was torn between Bowler and hopewrites... Both very enjoyable stories, but in the end I had to give Bowler the vote for the Rudolph glue
