Szekret Sztory: Szection Szeven

Werewolf thief story is go. Not sure where it's going, but it's definitely on its way. Plowed through 2,600 words today while I was bored at work.

Also, interestingly, I haven't gotten a "no" from Lightspeed Mag yet. Their website says rejections are sent within 2 business days. It's been 3 business days. Does that mean I made it into a second pile? STAY TUNED.

Wrested keyboard from cat long enough to do some judicious editing and submit.
Don't feel it was finished, just at a good stopping place. Will probably attempt to finish at later date.
Currently working up an old SS for submission to an anthology. Can't remember if it was a request or a spare.
Then I found another half started story that would be just as good for submitting if I could get it to go somewhere...

*what I'm babbling is; I feel like I'm hip deep in half started stories with no ends in sight. But I'm happy too.
Whatever version of weird that makes me I'm ok with :)

Shucks, is that the time?!

We're well past deadline time, and I suppose everyone is due an update.

First thing is thanks to everyone who took the time to submit something, and double spoonfuls of thanks to those people who went above and beyond the call of duty and wrote two stories!

As for the person who wrote three stories, you shame us all.

To the stats!

Out of 15 requests, 10 have been completed and delivered to their recipients.

Two authors have delayed their offerings, and another three haven't been in touch.

One author seems to have dropped off of Chrons altogether.

So well done all, and I think there'll be more to come.

The next step will be for me to set up another thread where I'll post an extract from each story, and everyone can have a go at guessing who wrote what.

Well done, everyone!

And guess what happens as soon as I post that? Two more stories!

I was a bit remiss in my last post - actually there were 13 original requests made, but with some heroes writing more than one story, we have arrived at the strange situation where 11 of 13 requests have been satisfied, but we still have 4 outstanding...

Excerpts coming soon!

My secret?

Constant abuse. Works every time :D

I went down to the demonstration, to get my fair share of abuse.
You can't always get what you want but if you try sometimes, you might find, you get what you need.

Since I missed out on abuse I must have delivered something - oh, and yes, I have received (and read) my story, and haven't informed you yet - and have no idea who could have written it.

OK, most of the stories are in, with a promise on the outstanding ones (you know who you are :ninja:).

So, to recap, here is our list of authors:

Hopewrites
Vaz
Ihe
Chrispenycate
Johnnyjet
Victoria Silverwolf
Ashleyne B. Watts
Sinister42
Hazelrah
Robert Mackay
Kerry Buchanan
Shyrka
Phyrebrat
Johnnyjet

And now I'll begin posting excerpts from each submitted story, along with the original request and requestee.

As they come up, I'll post up a few lines about each story, and you can begin the guessing once all thirteen are up. I'll endeavour to get them all up over the next day.

Well I've pretty much already spoiled mine in the critiques forum, but you're welcome to post an excerpt from it if you'd like anyway. :)

Request: Ashleyne B. Watts: "I like horses, and I also like the idea of jousting. I'd like to joust one day, but for now, I'd like a story which features at least one joust."

For this request there were two responses; here they are. I'll post the first one or two paragraphs from each story, followed by a short review by me, then attach the full stories as uploaded files for whomsoever wants to read on.

Joust a Bit More

We're supposed to sit and be pretty, cheering our heroes in a moderate and restrained fashion, and handing out kerchiefs or whatever to our chosen ones. Sarri had a wicked grin as she handed over her favour – a diaphanous silk undergarment, severely torn – to Rufus, her present companion, and his expression suggested he had some private knowledge about the tearing, as he bound it to his spear haft. Short spear only – he would be spiking objects off the ground, off a short horse, rather than trying to knock other riders around.

An entertaining romp that shows the closeness between a man and his filly, and reveals that there are more similarities between horse and man than perhaps meets the eye. A story of exceptionally good breeding.

The Heirs Of Nothing

Captain Karon and his officers waited in front of the hulking doors, waiting for the guards there to open them. The guards looked straight ahead and made no attempt to justify the wait. Karon stood straight, paralyzed by pride, but they would not move for him. He spit at their feet and their hands reached for their stato-matter swords, not a flicker in their eyes, still fixed on the darkening horizon. Karon stopped his more-than-willing officers from escalating the situation, resigned to the insult, and pushed the doors open. Creaking resounded inside the silence of the Great Hall.

This space-set steampunk depicts slighted war-hero Captain Koren, who gets more than he bargained for when he challenges the kingdom's greatest warrior, Lord Melivant, to a personal duel in which he attempts to upset the odds. Only thing is, he doesn't account for Lord Melivant's beautiful daughter.

Request: Chrispenycate - "A Portal magpie."

Magpie

“So what, you’re a bird? I’m confused.” Ellie furrowed her brow and fiddled with the shiny thing I’d brought back from Earth 1023.

“No. That’s not the only definition of ‘magpie,’ my dear,” I said.

I whipped out my tablet and typed the search in, then passed it to Ellie. “See? Definition two: ‘a person who collects things, especially things of little use or value.’ That’s what I do.”

She nodded, appearing to understand, her child’s mind wrapping itself around the concept. She was finally getting old enough that I could really explain to her where I was going, why I disappeared, why I wasn’t always there for her. Ellie was growing up fast now, and it was getting harder to break away from her. But eventually the Tiding would call me back, get me twisting the dials on the Wing and flitting off to a new dimension.

A collector, or "Magpie" leaps between alternate dimensions to collect apparently worthless artefacts at the behest of the mysterious Tiding, for apparently no reason. After a particularly risky jump yields nothing more than a child's toy, the Magpie decides to find out what's going on with the Tiding. But that might mean taking a leap into the unknown...

That Damned Magpie

George sat frowning at the flies buzzing around his apple pie. He should have eaten it by now, but that damn magpie... "Grrrrr." It'd stolen his spoon, and was sat on a branch above the river, mocking him.

Since his wife died, eighty years old and still too early, sunny days eating his lunch by the river was about the only time he felt content, and that stupid magpie...

He picked up a rock, looked around to check that no one was watching, then launched it, or at least he attempted to; alas, his arm twanged in pain and the rock fell at his feet.

~

A short but very sweet - and deliciously weird - picture of an old man, possibly sans marbles, as he contemplates loss, life, savoury fruit, and engages in an epic, existential tussle with magpie. Truly, the dish ran away with the spoon.

More soon!
