DISCUSSION -- July 2016 300-word Writing Challenge (#22)

Victoria Silverwolf's reviews were terrific - can't beat those, but I couldn't not say something for each one, at least this once.

A Detective’s Tale – First line of the story wins the ‘Best Metaphor of the Whole Contest’ award. Very funny, and loved the ‘Never-Ending Story’ breaking of the fourth wall near the end.

Awesome job everyone – and thanks everyone who voted for my first-ever effort (curtsey). I’m totally flattered!

Firstly, nice to meet you DZara. And second, you did an excellent job with your first entry. And thank you for the wonderful comment on my story. :D

Was worried I'd forget to vote for this, so I'm getting in now, ather than dill-dallying for another few days. Really good stories all, I like the amont of created myths that the imAge has brought up.

My shortlist is as follows:- Starbeast

Thank you LittleStar for including me in your Short List. You made my night.

I guess I can say this now. (ahem - cough, cough)........"Great Galaxy!!! The 15th is Monday. The poll will close SOON!!!"

Many, many thanks for the votes and mentions (I think I liked them all as they happened. I hope so.) Happy dance. And many, many thanks to @Starbeast for the kick up the bum to remind me to read and vote! :D

You're immensely welcome Jo Zebedee. I'm not a kicker, I pat. Besides, I didn't want members to panic in the final seconds.

Life has been... uh, life lately. Didn't get around to writing an entry for this one, but I'm spending my Saturday morning reading all these great entries. Whittling down from first impressions to the second glance, I've come up with a shorter list (below). Folks not mentioned, be not disheartened for I am forced to cull it down to only 3. As always, the choices are difficult.

(Vaz) A Ballad of Light & Night
(Victoria S.) Amber Waves
(Wruter) A Cup of Moonshine
(Cathbad) Blood Moon, Man and Beast
(JD Foster) Dust
(Cascade) The Delta
(Perp) The Singer, etc.
(HazelRah) The Lust of Avarice
(Shyrka) Small Steps
(DG Jones) Crying for the Moon
(mosaix) An Offer...
(Phyrebrat) C-- D--
(Judge) Bulrush Child
(Ursa Major) Can you...?
(Fitzchiv) Cake & Wotsits
(BigJ) Not with a whimper

Busy week but managed to vote:
The Space Between -- LittleStar
Cake & Wotsits – Fitzchiv
Dust -- J D Foster
Will follow with a short list (which will be long, and in current draft is too long, because the quality here is high as always) as soon as I can. Thanks for the votes mosaix and Shyrka, and mentions to those that did!

Always hard on the 300 to choose not least because there is a greater investment in reading and considering. This time around I've tried to read entries as they were posted and those that are short listed are those that grabbed me at first reading and that when it came time to *vote* I felt compelled to go back to.

Corey Swanson
Wruter

*Littlestar*
*Mosaix*
*The Judge*

Wow thanks for the votes StillLearning and Zebedee, and for the shortlisting Denise Tanaka. Great start to a Sunday to see those!

Ode to Italo - Imagination food with a thrilling flavour and a slightly bitter after-taste.

A Cup of Moonshine - A thowback with a satisfying twist.

Dust - The beauty of destruction is brilliantly portrayed. Sadness and awe combine with engaging characters.

And that's where my 3 votes.

Abig thanks to Victoria and DZara for your splendid reviews.

Wow, didn't think my story was gong to get much recognition is month as its such a strong challenge. I was very happy with just two votes, but I woke up this morning to find myself with 5! And joint third no less!
Thanks a heap :)

A good crop of stories this quarter, and what's more I understood most of them, which is some achievement!

My shortlist:

Cascade -- The Delta -- disturbingly voyeuristic
Cat's Cradle -- oh dear god -- silliness in the slush pile
DG Jones -- Crying for the Moon -- simply perfect
DZara -- Ten Second Waves -- lovely use of voice
Fitzchiv -- Cake & Wotsits -- powerful and heartbreaking
LittleStar -- The Space Between -- magical true love
mosaix -- An Offer They Can't Refuse -- frighteningly real
Phyrebrat -- Conscientious Deserter -- lyrical Armageddon
StilLearrning -- Vehicular Offence -- wonderfully daft
Victoria Silverwolf -- Amber Waves -- elegant, atmospheric writing
Wruter -- A Cup of Moonshine -- a perfect fairy tale

Whittling down a long list to this sensibly-sized shortlist was very difficult (and a number of stories only just failed to make it eg those of Perp, ratsy and Shyrka) but voting was very, very easy, since I picked my winners on the very first read. My votes went to DGJ whose story is among the best I've read, Fitzchiv for an ending which brought tears to my eyes, and Victoria for a sense of magic and otherworldiness in dystopia.

Some mythic swimming-moon thanks for the mentions, long- and short-listings and runners-up-ships Victoria, Vaz, Starbeast, johhnyjet, LittleStar, nixie and Denise, and a great many fabulous small but immensely powerful bulrush thanks for the wondrous votes Shyrka (and many thanks for the wonderful words), Cascade and Dan!

So in my haste to vote, I also accidentally deleted my painfully selected shortlist  so if I miss you out of this re-creation please feel free to take it as an honourable mention anyway :ROFLMAO:
