DISCUSSION -- July 2016 300-word Writing Challenge (#22)

Okey Dokey, my votes for this one went to...

HazelRah - The Lust of Avarice
DG Jones - Crying For the Moon
Moonbat - Savior Moon

Cascade, Shyrka, StilLearning and mosaix received a Highly Commended Award. (In form of positive vibes) :D

Thanks, Victoria, for the pleasant surprise of a vote! That's awesome & humbling, especially considering the high quality of submissions. Now I have to make my choices. It's going to be difficult.

Enjoyed reading this months offerings, quite a diverse range of takes on that picture as always.

(Shortlist, Vote)

An Ode to Italo - Cory Swanson
A Cup of Moonshine - Wruter

The Lust of Avarice - HazelRah
Small Steps - Shyrka
The Moon is a Harsh Mistress - ratsy
An Offer They Can't Refuse... - mosaix
Now with a whimper... - BigJ

Thanks to Cat's Cradle and Cory Swanson for the votes - very much appreciated, and also to Victoria for her wonderful little review as always (one of the highlights of taking part in these competitions).

Found this month very frustrating, as I had a lot to say and (as usual) found 300 words far, far too few for my needs ;-)

Thanks for the lovely shortlists and the frankly delicious vote, @Fitzchiv. This month's effort was actually the result of a crisis of confidence - I'd written up one attempt and rejected it in favour of a completely different idea that I was pretty happy with (watch this space) but the original idea kept niggling, demanding my attention until I gave it another try. I'm glad I did, because of the ideas I had, it was clearly my subconscious' favourite.

There were one or two that I didn't understand this month and one or two that I didn't think were a 'story'.

"Amber Waves"

I'm always dazzled by the way you blend a story with elements of the beautiful and the macabre.
I get drawn into your tale's enchanting atmosphere, until suddenly, it becomes hauntingly eerie. Creepy cool.
And a big "thank you" for your work on the reviews.

"A Cup of Moonshine"
by Wruter

What a wonderful fantasy tale you have written. I felt like a kid as I floated through your story.
A marvelous adventure, filled with amusement, and a delightful happy ending. Terrfic.

"Not with a whimper..."
by BigJ

Your astonishing science fiction story fascinated me with shock and awe, amazement and horror.
I smiled at the alien arrival, and raised my eyebrows at your entry's stunning closure. Excellent.

Here's my shortlist for this month:

A Single Fall of Hair, @Jo Zebedee
Penta, @ThomasG
Ten Second Waves, @DZara
The Singer, the Coyote and the Tears of the Moon, @Perpetual Man
Lust of Avarice, @HazelRah
A Cup of Moonshire, @Wruter

Votes:

Vehicular Offence, @StilLearning - I loved the absurdity of this: the mundane destination, the delightfully sordid reason for the man-in-the-moon's visit and the sheepish admission that the moon's service record might not be spotless. Shades of Douglas Adams.

The Bulrush Child, @The Judge - One of a number of fable-like tales this month but the one that spoke to me the most. It has all the hallmarks of the old morality tales - the father's cruelty, the bizarre goal with no concern for reality and the utterly merciless conclusion. Delightful.

Cake & Wotsits, @Fitzchiv - This entry didn't so much pull on my heart strings as swung from them like a demented Tarzan in a Cirque de Soleil performance. It starts so downbeat, the despondent protagonist's fatalism almost comforting in the face of the apocalypse. But the ending - facing down death with his only friend at his side, clinging to one last forlorn hope for the future - gets me every time.
