Discussion thread -- August 2016 75-word Writing Challenge

@EmeraldTempest -- it's a pretty good story too! Perhaps you would like to haul yourself down to introductions and give us a bit of bio. You've already passed one of the normal suggestions.... checking out the monthly 75 word challenge.

Okay I have had a severe time issue this month and have been playing with an idea, but getting it down on paper, then cut down to size has been problematic...

However it did trigger another idea, again it was too long and in >ahem< truncating it, it has lost most of the New Weird from it, leaving just the slightest hint. It is however weird. :D

I've been tossing about an idea for a while now, but only today it decided to visit me fully formed.

I love the genre choice, and have just caught up with the entries; there are some crackers in there. Why do I get the feeling it isn't coincidence that the genre of "weird" brings the best out of the Chronners? :alien:

Why am I immortal? Why? @EmeraldTempest – An undead hunter laments the loss of their predatory instincts in this introspective tale of a nightmare creature made impotent by the kindness of its benefactors.

Not Nellie, the Other One, @Perpetual Man – This elephantastical story tells of a city, steeped in magic, in which a dynasty of sacred pachyderms is key to the peoples’ happiness and prosperity.

The War on Terrier, @DG Jones – Worth it for its puntastic title alone, this tale (or should that be ‘tail’?) of canines taking over shows that our new overlords may at least be merciful. A shaggy dog story?

Thankful for the Small Things, @ratsy – With parallels to a well-known sci-fi franchise, this chilling story of xeno-horror is – like the death of its protagonist – mercifully short.

Complete Integration, @ThomasG – The story of a disturbing world where humans are ruled by monstrous alien creatures that have forced us to integrate with them in truly alarming ways.

Thanks for the comments Victoria and Shyrka, as always I appreciate (and know) the time and effort that goes into them.

Brand new to the forum looking for a Scifi group to chat with when I saw your writing challenge. It looked like fun so I gave it a shot with my first post. I have to say I found the topic a tad confusing but from reading others I think I got the idea.

fun fun!

Ok, I've done my bit, but c'mon, guys -- less than a day left and we're still far short of 42. Don't let chrispy down!

Chrispy's one of those who're letting you down - I seem to have shot myself in the foot with this genre. But I will make it (somehow).

Those missing (and expected) are:- Cat's Cradle, Cathbad, chrispenycate, HazelRah, Hopewrites, J5V, johnnyjet, Mad Alice, mosaix, Mr Orange, Old Man Steve2016, Parson, Phyrebrat, reiver33, The Judge and Ursa major. I think.

Whither come rhymed comments glorious?
They can't be mine, must be Victoria's
After half a million lousy rhymes
I wonder if I'll merit mine this time.

You gave me nasty moment there, Chris. I was sure I'd entered last night. Just checked and I did. Phew!

The Indescribables, @Dulahan – This story of first contact with an alien race warns us to choose our friends wisely.

The Ginger Bread Man, @AJB – The heart-breaking story of a fairytale creature that gives too much of itself.

Works Both Ways, @Culhwch – A rich, evocative tale with a Lovecraftian bent, this entry tells of a young squid boy’s attempts to survive on the streets. One stranger’s act of kindness may prove to be a life-saver. For both of them.

The Iron Lands, @Cascade – With power comes responsibility, something that the ruler of the world described in this bleak tale knows all too well.

The Disciple, @AstroZon – Marooned in a deserted, unfamiliar town, a traveller finds help from an unlikely – and furry – source.

Just The Two Of Us, @mosaix – A conversation between two halves of the same mind takes a dark turn as they make a bid for freedom.

Hungry and Homeless, @Bowler1 – A vagrant with a supernatural gift to heal others of their ills asks little in return but few are prepared offer the hand of charity.

Don’t, @TheDustyZebra – This marvellously meta tale of a writer treating their story like a pet to be nurtured ends abruptly when
