Discussion Thread -- September 2016 75-word Writing Challenge

A deserved win. It also explains the orange skin and strange comments of a certain presidential candidate. Prototypes will have their little glitches...

(having said that the other candidate scares the pants off me - fortunately I don't live in the US and don't have the horrendous problem of deciding which one to vote for)

I know a lot of you would have got the umpteen references in my piece as well as the title itself, but in case anyone is still scratching his/her head over the allusions, I ripped off a soliloquy from the last act of Macbeth. Macbeth, who has killed King Duncan and stolen the crown, has just been told his wife is dead (to which he replies "She should have died hereafter" which I was cribbing in my cryptic post about Victoria) and he continues:

To-morrow, and to-morrow, and to-morrow,
Creeps in this petty pace from day to day,
To the last syllable of recorded time;
And all our yesterdays have lighted fools
The way to dusty death. Out, out, brief candle!
Life's but a walking shadow, a poor player
That struts and frets his hour upon the stage
And then is heard no more. It is a tale
Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury
Signifying nothing.​


I should have taken that last line as prophecy, perhaps, since "nothing" is what I got in the way of votes! ;)
 
Great work @johnnyjet. These months when the voting is so spread are so hard to call!

Huge thanks to @Jo Zebedee for the vote - I was really expecting to strike out this month so it was a lovely surprise.
 
CHALLENGE ANNOUNCEMENT!


I hope johnnyjet will forgive me for interrupting the well-deserved plethora of congratulations for his win, but now the 75 worder is over, and this post is less likely to be buried or missed, it's time for a short but important announcement.


The 300 worder will be starting on Saturday -- though, as ever, entries won't be allowed until the 10th to give time for those early entries to be polished, rather than posted in haste and repented at leisure.

The 300s have always carried a tangible prize of a book of the winner's choice, and we're all very grateful to Brian for funding this as he has done since the beginning. However, the cost and inconvenience of shipping has become a bit of a problem. Brian has also noted the rise in popularity of e-books since the 300 was started back in April 2011, and it appears these can't be gifted in the same way.

Consequently, with effect from October's Challenge there is a new prize for the 300 Word Writing Challenges.


The prize is now a £5/$5 Amazon gift voucher.


Not only will this make life less complicated for Brian and allow for e-books, but also for the first time it will allow winners to put the money towards a more expensive book that would be outside the previous prize limit, or indeed towards something other than a book if there are those who think they already have enough. (Is that even possible?!)

I'm not sure how the gift voucher system will work, so whoever wins this quarter's Challenge will be acting as guinea pig. Apologies now if there is a delay while we work it through.

In the meantime, I know we'll all want to thank Brian for his continued support of the Challenges, even if we can't lure him back to take part in them. ;)

For once I caught a literary reference, TJ!
I was hoping that my bold use of a prologue in a 75-word story would help my cause...but sadly, no. :)

And thank you, Brian, for your interest, and support of the challenges. The voucher sounds like a terrific prize.
 
I lost my short list, but I'm Going to try and remember what it was. In order of my rememberings:

Phantom of the space opera -haha earthlings think they're so cool

Ladies and Gentlemen -wait, I'm empathic, is that why people hate it when I cry? Brilliant!

School Play -because children!

Posterior Posterity -for <REDACTED> sake, this story was so awesomely plausible it snagged my second place.

Leave it to the Psychoniers- love the idea of psychoniering, way too plausible that if/when this is invented it will be a reality show/game show.

And naturally a hearty congrats to Johnny Jet on the win, and perpetual gratuity to Brian for hosting us in this delightful home away from (and yet within) home.
