Star Wars VIII: The Last Jedi

Is it weird I keep forgetting the male protagonist's name?

Anyway, I can't wait to see if he finally asks Poe out. :p

Well, the trailer's out:

I have to admit to being somewhat underwhelmed - but I'm taking that as a positive, as it means going to the cinema without expectations too high.

l agree to being underwhelmed. But I'm not sure that's a positive. And (Parson continues to obstinate!) the Empire Strikes back was the worst of the originals. I hated how it ended.

I guess Luke's too heavy to be carried on the back. It happens a lot to older men.

Having just watched the trailer again, I can't help but wonder if they're using misdirection with the way the Kylo=Leia and the Kylo=Ren sequences have been edited together - and that they may be put together very differently in the film.

2c.

Oh they are clearly either trying to mess with us with those scenes or not. Hard to say but they are very clearly picked out scenes and sequences.

Haha, I always thought the scene in TFA between Finn and Rae in the MF was very oddly scripted. Finn asks, 'You have a boyfriend? A cute boyfriend?'

What heterosexual man would ask a woman if her boyfriend was cute? It's so incongruous with the intention of the scene that Finn fancies Rae, for him to use that. Not that I care whether he's gay or not, but it is a little odd.

And (Parson continues to obstinate!) the Empire Strikes back was the worst of the originals.

Don't worry Parson, you're in good company (I can be good company, I promise!). It's my least favourite SW fim, too. It also signalled the beginning of the fanboy deifying of Boba Whatt? who I think is one of the least interresting figures in the SW universe. Mind you, I love Jar Jar, so my opinions are pretty wacky. :D

I didn't quite understand the furore on social media about spoilers; I liked the trailer and can't say I thought anything was spoilerish; I'd say it was edited smartly to give us red herrings but that's about it. Actually I might watch it again now and see if I change my mind.

The Boba of the Expanded Universe (know known as Legends) novels is much cooler, but even then, i too have never gotten the love, for what was a bit part character, who appeared on screen for mere seconds, said about 4 words. In Legends, he managed to escape the Sarlac, but is very badly burned, he had a couple of books to himself. Also, whilst both wear Mandalorian Armour, neither Fett is Mandalorian in the films, but in Legends, I think they are.

I am one of those many, many readers who will never forgive Disney for dropping the canon of the books, it's such a rich, huge universe, all gone. And frankly, the post Return of the Jedi future history of the novels is more interesting though I do wonder..

The whole First Order stuff has made it feel like they are simply Rebooting the original movies without having the courage to say so, and in the books the Empire was never completely defeated - by around the time the new movies are set, you have the Galactic Alliance, as the inheritor state of both the Old Republic and the New Republic, and the inheritor of the Galactic Empire (pretty much in name only, since most of the Empire is part of the republic), and the Empire of the Hand, the "Imperial Remnant" a much smaller body, now at peace with the GA. The Remnant was (mis)managed for years by the Council of Moffs, then due to various things, Jagged Fel is promoted to the office of Emperor, and iirc, sorts of the Moff's out, and he and his descendents will rule as Emperors/Empresses for generations to come. Jagged is very much a good man, a decent man, and a Hero in the Galactic Alliance as much as to the Remnant.
Jagged's father is the legendary Baron Soontir Fel, the Empire's greatest Pilot, turning the dreadful, lacklustre 181st Imperial Fighter Wing, into the Imperial Navy's most Elite unit, a Corellian himself, the Good Baron married a well known Corellian Actress called Wynssa Starflare, who turned out to be the Sister of Rebel Ace Pilot, Wedge Antilles :D So Wedge is Uncle to the future Emperor!
Oh, and I think at the point the Legends series got to, before Disney got involved, Jagged Fel just after getting the news of his forthcoming promotion, asks his Girlfriend to marry him, and be his Empress. His GF, is the Sword of the Jedi, Jaina Solo (later Jaina Solo Fel) Daughter of Han and Leia, this is not long after her twin brother Jacen fell to the Dark Side, becoming Darth Caedus, and she was the one who fought and killed him the final time - Luke was still the most obvious choice to take Caedus out - Caedus was more powerful than Jaina, but Luke was more powerful than Caedus, but he was terrified of being anywhere near him - Caedus murdered Lukes wife, Mara Jade, and in some ways, far worse, very nearly managed to turn Mara and Lukes' Son Ben over into the Dark Side too, and so Luke feared that if he personally fought Caedus, then he too would fall to the Dark Side, because he would not have had any control over his emotions, regardless of his best intentions, he would be fighting, and killing Caedus out of anger and hatred, the quickest way to go dark.

So Disney has scrapped loads of really cool things! but thinking about this has made me wonder if the First Order is actually borrowing quite a bit out of the early post return of the jedi novels, the continuation of the "Galactic Civil War" After Endor, the Empire was in disarray, the vicious Emperor who held his Empire together with fear and head bashing was gone, the Imperial Navy suffered tremendous losses, and there was no obvious Heir, so as well as fighting the Rebels, various Moffs, Admirals etc declared themselves rulers, and fought each other too.
Then Grand Admiral Thrawn reappeared - the Emperor had sent him and his fleet out to uncharted space, mainly iirc, because he didn't want anyone to see Thrawn but wasn't prepared to lose Thrawns fantastic skills as an Admiral, tactician and strategist. The problem was, the Empire was very anti alien, very pro Male human, so women didnt get much of a look in and Thrawn was an Alien! One of the only in the Imperial navy. He was a Chiss (Race from the Legends books) they looked pretty human but are blue skinned, red eyed.

So I wonder if the leader of the First Order is based on Thrawn. That would be cool.

series 3 awaits you...

is he with or without Captain Gilad Pellaeon? :D

So, it's possible that Admiral Daala could turn up too  drool, err I mean, bad, naughty lady Imperial Admiral!

There's some amazing cosplay from the EU novels!

This is the Sword of the Jedi wearing her Stealth-X Pilot gear. (Stealth-X is a stealth version of the X-Wing deployed by the Galactic Alliance)

I'm a little late to this party, but I got a very suspicious Empire Strikes Back-vibe from this trailer. If the story ends up being that Rey is training with Luke on a remote planet until she realises her friends are in danger and rushes off to help them only to be tempted by Kylo and the dark side... well, I'm not going to be terribly happy.

I hope I'm wrong and they go in a totally different direction...

Culhwch, it's a cunning plan. They're going to have another Death Star, but you'll be so glad they didn't just copy Empire Strikes Back you'll end up being surprised and grateful they're using the same storyline they've used three times before :D

No, they wouldn't do that:

You mean like the dark master revealing a hidden family connection to the young Jedi? No, surely it wouldn't happen ... :D

Btw, I get a funny feeling the point to this trilogy is the salvation of Kylo Ren - and that he will be turned to the light by the end, to begin a new life with Rey.

Simply because there's a scene in that trailer of Kylo marching with troopers, seen from above, that looks like a copy of Anakin from the prequels - which were about his struggle and fall to the dark side. Kylo has already fallen, so presumably we must see him struggle to rise out from that.

Which would mean, of course, that Rylo will defeat Snoake to protect Rey in Episode 9 during a big attack on his base ...
