As ever, some stories didn't to me seem to hit the genre, and weren't fables as such, and one or two left me puzzling where "Growth" was. A few others just left me puzzling.
Anyhow, my shortlist, which is shorter than I'd have liked as several stories wanted to sneak in because of their good writing or cleverness, but were barred by my pernickityness over genre (and the moral is...):
Cat's Cradle -- The Jewel Thief
Jo -- The Tale of Aster and Moss
Parson -- A Growth in Intelligence
Sapheron -- The Warmth of Experience
Shykra -- The Ivy and the Mushroom
TDZ -- Let It Shine
Victoria -- The Woman and the Moon
I had real problems making a decision this month, and wavered back and forth for a goodly while, each one of the above having at least one aspect that put it above its rivals. I managed to whittle the list down to three -- CC, Parson and TDZ -- and despite CC's most moral moral, and Parson's clever chicken brilliantly outwitting sly fox, in the end I just couldn't resist
TDZ's unmossy tale and daft proverbing moral!
Many grown-big, bully-defeated fabulous thanks for the mentions/shortlistings Droflet, Storm, Starbeast, Parson, (damn that Zebra for swiping my vote!), DGJ, johnnyjet, Perp, farntfar, CC (that will teach me to post so late!) and Phyrebrat. And fast, strong and smart, perfectly sized shrewd thanks for the lovely votes Stable, Kerry, Luiglin, nixie, Chris P, and stealthy Wruter! Far more than I expected, and undoubtedly far more than the doggerel deserved!
EDIT: by my calculations, we've only got 30 votes recorded. After her success in persuading people to enter, can the stripey one -- or anyone else -- send out more FaceBook messages, guilt-tripping members into voting?
