Discussion -- November 2017 -- 75 Word Challenge

Congrats @mosaix.

Thanks for the vote again @dannymcg and the mentions folks.

I'd also like to apologise for an inappropriate title and first line that could be read as me trying to get around the 75 word rule. It was a genuine error and one that I hadn't realised I'd made until reading through all the entries again at lunch today.

If there's something strange in your circus tent...

The Shaman sang as he shone a torch around the tent...
The title was a play on the Ghostbusters theme song (as was the rest of the tale). However, I hadn't intended for it to look like the Shaman was singing it. He was meant to be singing a power ballad to evoke the spirits. Sorry all.

I didn't notice that at all! That is, I noticed the Ghostbusters bit, but didn't think the Shaman was singing it. Now that you mention it, I'm not sure why I didn't think that, but there you go. :)

CONGRATULATIONS MOSAIX

At the risk of self-absorbed pedantry for what may be glaringly obvious to all, in my story "Sister Agnes":

a Chicken Geek was/?is a freak show attraction who'd bite the heads off chickens.

Zip the Pinhead was a famous character in Barnum's travelling circus, and of course inspired Griffiths' Zippy the Pinhead.

Salt Chunk Mary was a significant character in the seamier side of the railroad town of Pocatello, Idaho in Jack Black's autobiographical memoir of turn of the century theft and vagrancy, "You Can't Win".

Congratulations Mosaix! An excellent story and well deserved win. (y)

And thank you so much Johnnyjet for the vote. And a surprise stealth vote from Farntfar! Thank you. :)
Thank you also for the lovely mentions from Vaz, Cat’s Cradle, Mosaix, Shyrka, and Jo Zebedee. It’s been wonderful to receive them.

Congratulations, mosaix! It's a fine story. Looking forward to your genre/theme choices in ... two days! :)

To my earlier thanks, I'd like to add SPoots, The Judge, and Ursa Major ... wow! Good results in one challenge can really rev your motors. Fun challenge, everyone!

Congratulations, mosaix!!

That, by the way, is mosaix's 8th win and he's the first to reach that exalted level!

Thank you for the shortlisting, Ashleyne -- very gratefully received!

Luiglin, I'm with TDZ -- I didn't read the title as the opening words to the story, so don't worry about it.

Thanks, everyone.

Thanks to mith, Dan Jones, nixie, hugh, Teresa, johnnyjet, CC, Luiglin, Shyrka, TJ and UM for the shortlists / mentions.

A special thanks to Talysia, Suzanne, TDZ, Starbeast, Droflet, Phyrebrat, Victoria and HazelRah for the votes.

Commiserations to CC and Suzanne.

I'm intrigued by CC's entry. I didn't quite understand it. Clearly others did as it attracted votes. Please, please explain it CC, just for my peace of mind.

Regarding my own entry. I found Teresa's choice of theme and genre a bit daunting and had no ideas at all until I was watching the Father Ted episode where he goes into the fortune tellers tent and draws four Death cards (love the music!) from the tarot deck when there's only supposed to be one. I looked up the tarot deck and five or six sprang out at me immediately. Once I'd got them in sequence the story practically wrote itself.

As for theme and genre for next month, in the past I've picked a random word from the spines of books or CDs on my shelves, but December is Christmas month so watch this space.

This just reminded me; you picked Toy Story! Do your normal picking; please! Maybe I can pull out another "Insurrection"...
