I saw an interesting bit of old tech in a Charlie Chan movie with Sydney Toler. It was a post-war movie, so between 1945 and 1947. There was a cafe that had a jukebox with a video camera; one entered the coins, and told the operator what song to play, who then loaded the single record on a player. I have not found anything like that while exercising my google-fu.
I did find the 1940's equivalent of "elevator music", where operators put on long-play records for customers. The music went out over dedicated phone lines, and the customer could then split that signal up to as many speakers as they wished.
