October 2018 seventy-five word discussion thread

Peter V: Sometimes it’s better off to be without ability. Though I often wonder myself what telepathy would be like, if it were uncontrollable, I’d probably consider the same course of action this guy is taking. Unless, of course, his powers expand into full psionic abilities, in which case, that would just be awesome. Either one of the saddest examples of the Legacy, or one of the happiest. I really can’t decide which.

Hugh: I’ve said that trying to get a cat to do anything beyond its own whims and desires would be like trying to touch the sun. Well, here you’ve proven that it’s even more difficult. And a thumbs up there for Tab-tab…he gets extra kitty treats once safety is reached again.

StilLearning: Well, there’s much to be said about this kind of situation, not the least of which, awkward would come to mind for the one commander. But, even if the one beside you isn’t of your own species, that doesn’t mean they can’t be trustworthy or dependable, as it seemed was the case here.

Plucky Novice: Sometimes when the grass is greener on the other side, you need to question why it is, and this is one of those times. Especially when, apparently, there’s no oversight department…

Shyrka: A chilling tale, this one. The force of a hurricane packed into a shoebox. Disease is still a very real contender for the reason behind mankind’s sunset, and it’s doubly worrying when it comes from one of our own. Let’s just hope confusion and delirium aren’t symptoms of Varren’s, huh?

Azzagorn: Perhaps there’s really nothing sadder than a fool of a martyr. Sacrifice is supposed to mean that something good comes from the loss, but when it doesn’t, that’s just a terrible tragedy.

Glen: Interesting take on the end of the earth. It’s more than what’s deserved, and less than what is needed. I wonder, however, if version 2.0 would be any better…

Artorarius: Honestly, I really don’t think there can be many things more satisfying than karma and being able to laugh at someone whose manipulations were doomed from the start. Gave me a smile.

Parson: A good little drone in a sea of drones. For some reason this reminded me somewhat of the Stanley Parable, except for the fact that Jon Cleese would not be gracing us with his voice for narration this time, and that James Henry and his line would have no chance of escaping the monotony. But, if one is satisfied with one’s lot in life, and can meet the next with an open heart and a smile, then isn’t that really what’s important in the end?

HoopyFrood: The sad thing here is, this is exactly how I would imagine society would be in a thousand years, if it continues on the track it’s on. Not even Futurama levels, but far worse. A good grin there at the end.

HareBrain: Very punny, HB, very punny. Set up in a pretty decent way, and as I said before, toilet humor, if done tastefully, can be effective, and this is another example of just such a scenario. I was shaking my head with a grin reading through this, but that punch line at the end was golden.

Phyrebat: Greed, fear, hatred, corruption…when those four dark sides of humanity meet, they can only reach one destination, and I feel like this is a warning about our ultimate fate. War and the destruction of global society can only lead to such a place, and that is when the shadows of mankind in the time before would finally get the chance to shine.

The Judge: One generation to the next, to the next…it only takes a single break in the chain for it to all fall apart. A good decision upon this mother, for multiple reasons, honestly…the idea of eating any part of a human turns my stomach like a dreidel.

Ashleyne: A morbid way of keeping our loved ones with us, and to say, serendipitous in a very macabre kind of way that it followed The Judge’s entry. But, this is the month for such things, and I kind of get the vibe of ghouls from the Fallout series over it.

Paranoid Marvin: Sage advice indeed, and solely reminding of JFK’s words as well. Don’t let greed overcome your hearts, but try instead to live the life you most want to, do what you desire to experience. Material possessions come and go like the ocean’s tide, but memories will last.

TheDustyZebra: I would love to read more of this fairy tale, it sounds like it would be quite an interesting story for it to continue. It reminds me of an old fable called The Farmer and his Sons. Let’s hope that the brothers here will learn to work and cooperate and live with one another as well as the ones in that fable had.

Ursa Major: And leave it to the bear to come up with such a pun. A good mix of the Halloween spirit and punny humor, I would probably be angry enough to kick my computer down the stairs if it ever gave me that terrible curse. And let’s hope that AI gets punished for its misbehavior.

I got even extra insight into everyone's stories doing these reviews, and that made my vote a little difficult, but I had to go with Hoopy at the end there, it's just a perfect amount of dread and humor to edge out. TDZ was a very close second, though.

Thank you for the review, Karn. :)

And thank you for the short listing/favourites, Kerry, and Nixie!

I'll thank you all properly after the poll closes so I don't miss anyone (I'll get confused if I have to do two posts).

Yeah, I honestly never really bothered with posting runner-up lists because often there's far too many to choose, and even voting sometimes can be hard. Good stories all around this month, as there usually was back in my day there too, and glad to see this is still going on.

I remember when laying out the rules and foundations for this was going on...75 words was the compromise. Some thought fifty, others a hundred...but in the end, I think this was a good balance.

Very scattered votes so far, no clear favourites as yet.

If you ain't voted yet then drop me one or two so we can have ourselves a competition!
