October 2018 seventy-five word discussion thread

@Victoria Silverwolf, thanks so much for your review. I love the summation contained in the phrase: "tradition and sacrifice ."

@jackwinabox57, Lovely review! When it says, "review of Parson's "Legacy": A fantastic voyage across Time and Lifetimes." I think it got at the heart of the story.

---------

@HoopyFrood .... Ancestry.com .... Hoopy (time out while Parson chuckles) sends us a perfect counterpoint to serious legacy.

"Noob_slayer69!" Classic!

@HareBrain .... The Halloween Toilet .... Harebrain has given us a legacy story many will want to flush away.

@Phyrebrat .... The Wall Artists of Pripyat .... The Brat turns his eyes toward a horrible legacy and a horrible truth to create a memorable story.

@The Judge .... Sorry, Mama. It’s the vultures for you. .... Her Honor tells a tale of a legacy scorned and for good reasons.

@Ashleyne .... THE FAMILY DEMON .... Ash tells a ghoulish tale of a legacy kept.

@paranoid marvin .... Sage Advice .... Marv indeed is in the advice giving legacy mode, but it seems JFK is channeled in the wrong direction.

@TheDustyZebra ..... If You Will .... Dusty has given us a tale of a legacy that sounds like the beginning of a wonderful questing tale.

Dusty, if you ever write Fantasy stuff this sounds like the opening nugget of a great story.

HoopyFrood bequeaths a wry tale, which points out that romantic ideas about the past may not be entirely accurate.

HareBrain bequeaths a Rabelaisian comedy, with multiple layers of wordplay to amuse the reader.

Phyrebrat bequeaths a heartrending account of a tragic event with long-lasting consequences, but also a touch of the undying courage of the human spirit.

The Judge bequeaths a dark fantasy, the premise of which is explored with remorseless logic.

Ashleyne bequeaths a grim tale of terror, with an allegorical representation of the way in which others become part of our own lives.

paranoid marvin bequeaths a rousing ballad, which teaches an important lesson about the things that really matter.

TheDustyZebra bequeaths a modern fairy tale, which offers a thoughtful moral of the importance of cooperation.

Ursa major bequeaths an imaginative account of a possible future crisis, with an ironic touch of wordplay.

I had to go back and reread all the entries twice in order to come up with a list of finalists. What resulted was a five-way tie for first place. I only have one vote, however, so I used it as best as I could.

Short List

Justin Swanton -- For important social commentary.

jackwinabox57 -- For emotional power.

Parson -- For creating a novel in a few words.

Phyrebrat -- For a powerful portrayal of tragedy.

The Judge -- For a fully developed premise.

VOTE

D.A. Xialoin Spires for an image of extraordinary beauty.

With reference to the earlier discussion on the story of a certain @HareBrain , I may as well begin the day with an unfortunate posting from Robert Crumb's "Pete the Plumber"...

Personally I struggled for inspiration this time around, partly due to reading the early entries which set the bar so high. It was a great choice of theme and brought out the best in the group.

Thank you again to our wonderful reviewers Victoria, Parson and Joshua Jones.

My personal favourites:

A Life, Less 21 Grams LittleStar Fantastic and immediately set the bar for me. Really like the clever title too.

A Personal Legacy Cathbad Echoes of the real world and a lesson to many of us.

Arrival Luiglin I can identify with this amusing tale and well imagine the results of a years old version of Windows trying to run. I usually have trouble when mine is only a couple of years!

" The 1st Anniversary of a New York City Legacy "jackwinabox57 A sad and poignant reminder that sometimes good can come from tragedy and possibly the greatest of legacy's.

Where There’s A Will... mosaix I have a penchant for time travel tales and paradoxes.

The Halloween Toilet HareBrain The groan inducing pun of the last word has to be worth a mention :)

The Wall Artists of Pripyat Phyrebrat A long lasting and unwanted legacy from the real world. Unfortunately I suspect the lesson of Chernobyl will not be heeded.

Sorry, Mama. It’s the vultures for you. The Judge Sounds like a good call to deny this legacy.

THE FAMILY DEMON Ashleyne Coincidentally similar but with a different conclusion to TJ's entry. I really liked it that these two are next to each other.

The Will To Win Ursa major Pun number two. Not sure which I prefer but it is equally as groan inducing!

I have voted for LIttlestar - when I read this I knew it would take something exceptional (in my opinion of course) to beat it but I would like to make a special mention for jackwinabox57 who ran it a very close second.

Well done all.

Peter

And I thought voting for the monthly photo contest was hard!
Ok, here are ones I liked very much:
@Luiglin Arrival We always think of future tech as being so superior and perfect. In reality, there is always some annoying issue that crops up.
@M. Robert Gibson The Ageless Legacy and @Parson A Long Obedience in the Same Direction I like the twists in both stories
@HareBrain Halloween Toilet Made me smile all day.

Ones I loved:
@D.A. Xiaolin Spires The Corporeal Voice Just beautiful and lyrical writing. The whole story tinkled like a bell.
@mosaix Where There's a Will Great idea on a time loop.
@HoopyFrood Ancestry.com Great zinger at the end.

One I am voting for:
@chrispenycate Out of the Autoclave Endlessly Rocking Very clever, and sends a message I can easily relate to.

@nixie You liked it! You really liked it!. Ok, a bit overboard, but it was my first, and when I see how many talented writers there are here, well, I am honored.

My shortlist was:

The Natural Order Of Things – Ihe
Don't Make Me Turn This Asteroid Around – David Evil Overlord
Simon Hagstone's Will – Starbeast
In Their Father's House – johnnyjet
Andersonville. 1864. - Bob Senior
Where There's A Will – mosaix
Coming of Age. – Peter V
Legacy: A Long Obedience in the Same Direction – Parson
Ancestry.com – HoopyFrood
If You Will – TheDustyZebra

I then boiled it down to this shorter list:

Simon Hagstone's Will – Starbeast
Where There's A Will – mosaix
Ancestry.com – HoopyFrood

Then it got tough. Ancestry.com's punchline twist was perfect. Where There's A Will was clever in that you had to make a mental leap to complete the story. But in the end I just loved the writing of Sim Hagstone's Will - a whole Gormenghast world brought to life in 75 words. It gets my vote.
