DISCUSSION -- November 2018 -- 85 Word Challenge

Parson seemed to be a little more of a romantic back then

I remember the idea that kicked off that story. It was the phrase: "I come from a long line of love." and I do. My dad was madly in love with my mom until the day she died after nearly 65 years of marriage. My wife and I are a month away from our 45th anniversary. Not one of my uncles or aunts were divorced, nor were any of my wife's uncles or aunts. Among our roughly 100 cousins there are less than 20 divorces. --- It's easy to be romantic with that track record.

The new Challenge comes to you from last month's winner, mosaix, and is now up November 2018 -- 85 Word Story Challenge -- READ FIRST POST! REALLY! READ IT!!

And to celebrate and commemorate mosaix's TENTH WIN in the monthly Challenges

we're delighted to announce we're all getting

AN EXTRA TEN WORDS

for the Challenge

Yep, that's right, this is a 85 Word Challenge for this month.

Because we know some people won't read the first post where 85 is written large, and probably won't read this post either, the Challenge thread is locked for a few hours to give the early posters pause. After that, you're on your own!

Make the most of the extra!

AND CONGRATS AGAIN TO MOSAIX ON HIS MAGNIFICENT ACHIEVEMENT!!
Where is the post you want us to read first?

The one at the beginning of this month's Challenge thread, which is here November 2018 -- 85 Word Story Challenge -- READ FIRST POST! REALLY! READ IT!! (click on the link)

The monthly Challenges usually have a limit of 75 words, but this month it's 85. I was worried that a lot of members would go on autopilot and post a story without noticing they had an extra 10 words this month, so I stressed it in the thread title as well as here in the Discussion thread.

And welcome to the Challenges -- I hope you're going to post a story!

Quick question please

How many words is the time classed as when it’s written as follows?

19:46

Many Thanks

Pedro

This is madness.

Madness I tell you.

Surely it should be the other way round. Winners should have words deducted compared to the rest of us.

So people should be handicapped based on their win count. So 65 this month for you @mosaix.

Oh they'll be griping. It's difficult enough to see the word count for a story is correct without adjusting the count for every winner, they'll say. But that's not us, "pathetic losers" problem.

We need to nobble the winners and make it more difficult for them to win.

Sadly, I suspect this will fall on stoney ground

Not often I slip in to the discussion at the moment, but just thought it better to clarify - when it comes to numbers a string of digits, 100,000,000 would count as one word?

I'm in. Enjoyed writing this one, never written a ghost story before. Took a little more time over it than I usually do. Hope you like it :)

One word pep

Thanks Nix!

Uh oh, do you ever get the story all ready to go, and then have an idea, an idea that might be brilliant it might be catastrophic, brilliant or stupid?

What the heck, I'm going to go with it, long time since I have done something this crazy with an entry.

(If any Mods want proof that it is 85 words, just ask, and I'll send a copy.)

Thank you Cathbad, that's very kind.

@Pedro Del Mar .... The Curious Significance of 12:34 .... Pedro tells a tale that begs the question where does coincidence end and cosmic significance begin.

@Perpetual Man .... Big Numbers .... I don't what to say about Perp's story. It's both erudite and memorable. It will stand forever in the short story hall of fame. The nuance is beyond belief, and yet it takes a clear moral stand for everything that is right and good in the world. It has the perfect title because anything less than Big Numbers would have failed to catch the eternal significance of this binary blessing.

@Fivestrings .... Just Stop Counting .... Fivestrings puts down a tale that reminds us that we can be masters of our own fate with only a little bit of trying.
