Gonna re-read The Keep by F. Paul Wilson. I last read it 10 years ago and back then I said I'd read others in the Repairman Jack series. I might just do that this time.

Robert Silverberg "A Time of Changes"
This got the 1971 Nebula and was nominated for the Hugo and Locus.
Sadly I found it tedious. Fortunately only @200 pages. About halfway through I remembered that I had perused it at length in a bookshop in the mid 70s and decided it was not for me - so my taste has not changed that much.

Finished Dark Matter by Michelle Paver. Well-done ghost story set in the Arctic, so a good addition to cold weather ghost/horror stories.

The plans of a 1937 expedition to gauge weather changes goes awry when they pick a particularly inhospitable camp site. The characters are sketched in nicely, especially the main narrator, Jack, who isn't entirely likable, but is certainly relatable. Without beating us over the head with it, like Sarah Waters in The Little Stranger, Paver uses the tension of class differences to supply motivation and perspective as it also guides the characters' decision-making.

I'm glad I finally got around to this one.

Walking to Aldebaran by Adrian Tchaikovsky - a brilliant novella in which Tchaikovsky has great fun giving nods to a bunch of other books and films. I loved the ending! More here.

Is Adrian Tchaikovsky your new favorite author? You seem to have a lot of very good things to say about his books.

He's certainly heading that way! I think it's fair to say he's on route to joining my favourites of Banks, Asher, Reynolds and Hamilton. The thing is that books from them are relatively infrequent whereas Tchaikovsky only came to my attention with Children of Time a year or so back and as this is only my fifth book from him there's still some back gatalogue to work through but I've loved all of his books so far! However one point to bear in mind is that all my favourite authors are Brits as is Tchaikovsky so part of it may be that I just prefer the British SF writing style.

Interesting comment about British SF authors. I've read little of Banks or Asher; but quite a little of Reynolds and Hamilton, both of whom I would call too verbose and too "out there" to be among my favorites. They are still authors whose work I sometimes consider. I did really like the Hamilton's Greg Mandel trilogy, and I was excited for the Confederation Universe novels. I did read all the C.U. novels but in the end I would have almost preferred a visit to the dentist to the utterly weird way everything changes in the story.

Don't worry you're not alone in that, my mother was born in 1930 and has always been an SF reader but of course was brought up on a significantly earlier breed of author with the likes of Azimov, Heinlein, Silverberg etc. I was brought up them too but shifted more towards fantasy in my youth and by the time I returned to SF it was to a much more modern bunch of authors such as those I mentioned. My mother has never managed to get on with them and prefers the more traditional style of space opera that is (or maybe that's was!) provided by authors like David Weber. I enjoy these too but do prefer those slightly more "out there" authors, as you put it. That verbose aspect is also something I like as it gives me a much greater sense of immersion.

I finished M John Harrison's The Sunken Land Begins to Rise Again, which I enjoyed despite not much ever happening in it.

It's clearly something the author enjoys doing, there's very little in the way of plot and it feels like it's more about creating an other worldly mood which unsettles you than about telling you a story with a coherent beginning, middle and end.

If I'm honest, I doubt I'll be going to rush out and buy his next one, but that's not to say I disliked this. I think that Jeff Vandermeer's Dead Astronauts aims to create something similar, now I think about it, but for me, not quite as successfully. I shall read that again at some point with this in mind. (he was much more successful with the Area X series, IMHO).

Next up is Rivers Solomon's An Unkindness of Ghosts

Malorie by Josh Malerman.
The sequel to Bird Box
Any good? I found Bird Box bleak, and unfocused (no pun intended considering the subject matter), and I thought the ending left too much in the air. It might just have been it didn't connect with me at the time (most likely explanation, in fact), but I'm half way interested in a sequel.

Just finished The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

Ridiculous and sublime.

A short list today, only nine titles. Pretty good though since it's just six days since my last update.

“The Night Realm,” book 1 of the Spell Weaver series by Annette Marie
A decent read and I'll be continuing the series, but it's not as good as her Guild Codex: Spellbound books. This one at least, while still urban fantasy, leans more toward paranormal romance. We'll see how the rest of them go.

"Land of Wolves," book 15 of the Longmire Mysteries by Craig Johnson.
The latest of the Longmire Mysteries and certainly among the best.

“A Minute to Midnight,” book 2 Of the Atlee Pine series by David Baldacci
Sequel to "Long Road to Mercy" and by far a better book. I knew I'd have to give this series another chance since Baldacci so rarely disappoints.

“Soulless,” book 1 of the Parasol Protectorate series by Gail Carriger
Brought to my attention by @tonymuhs, this first book in the series was a very enjoyable read. Like "The Night Realm" above, it leans further toward paranormal romance, but it was so much fun that the rest of the series is definitely "on deck."

“As You Wish,” book 3 of the How to Be the Best Damn Faerie Godmother in the World (Or Die Trying) series by Helen Harper.
“Best Wishes,” book 4 of the How to Be the Best Damn Faerie Godmother in the World (Or Die Trying) series by Helen Harper.
These two books are the end of, if not the series, than at least this cycle of books. It's a bit of a bad girl makes good tale spliced into an urban fantasy with just a hint of romance. While tying up all the current story-lines, she certainly left enough room in the universe for many more books and I do hope there are more to come.

“It Burns: The Scandal Plagued Race to Breed the World’s Hottest Chili” by Marc Fennell
Another Audible freebie that isn't a topic in my usual wheelhouse. An entertaining read about hot peppers and an insider's view into the world of "pepper-heads."

“The Blessing Way,” book 1 of the Navajo Mysteries by Tony Hillerman.
I've been sitting on these books ever since receiving them from a friend over a decade ago. I never really thought I'd be interested until a different friend told me they're similar in tone to the Longmire Mysteries. Lo and behold, they're right.

"A Symphony of Echoes," book 2 of The Chronicles of St. Mary's by Jodi Taylor.
Finally getting back to the St. Mary's books. I've been waiting on a Linux tool that would transfer the Audible versions to my player before I got going again. Incredibly fun reads about the historians at St. Mary's who do not time travel, but who view historical events in contemporary time.

281 titles so far this year anf still on pace for just under 500. 124 left to reach my goal and 156 days in which to do it. Not a lock, but certainly within the realm of easily attainable. :)
