Yep, Dying Inside is required SF reading, Hugh. Essentially anything he wrote between about 1967 and 1976 is an absolute gem.
Excellent. That's good to know.

Continued reading The Complete Stories and Poems of Edgar Allan Poe, and I see I'm not the only one here reading it. I just finished "Thou Art the Man," "The Oblong Box," "The Conversation of Eiros and Charmion," and "Metzengerstein."

I'm also still battling the blasted flies.

I've been listening to Alexis Henderson's The Year of the Witching, which is excellent so far. I'm hoping to have it finished (and possibly The Mercies) before John Connolly's latest arrives, all being well.

Finished The Hobbit. Interesting rereading it after 20 (30?) years. It's a great story, especially towards the end, but I'm still so familiar with every sentence, from multiple childhood readings, that nothing has any real impact. What I most appreciated were Tolkien's illustrations.

Have you read The Annotated Hobbit? I bet fifty to one you have.
I say this because I found it gave me a bit more distance/perspective. His illustrations are there too.

Twenty years then. My re-read was much the same as you, after @thirty, and I think the Annotated format made all the difference. Beautifully produced.

Philip K Dick "Flow My Tears, the Policeman Said"
I could say something about this book but I'm worried that if I do start to write anything, plain clothes policemen will arrive at my door within minutes and arrest me for crimes that I haven't committed, then, once at the station, they'll claim that there is no record of my existence and that I am in fact someone else of whom I've never heard. For these reasons I think it best to say nothing.

you mean to tell me you actually exist? uau i always thought you were a bot... ;)

I'm reading Jasper Fforde's latest book Constant Rabbit, recently out in hardback.. It is so political and socio-political that I can't possibly talk about it here, but if you are a fan of his book you will enjoy this one. As usual a very clever use of words and literary references. Not his best book though. I still want a sequel to Shades of Grey,

The new Peter Grant book of short stories was released to Kindle only today, so I have that to look forward to next - Tales from the Folly: A Rivers of London Short Story Collection by Ben Aaronovitch.

I've finally managed to boost my reading this month, thanks to some novels which were rather shorter than I've been encountering in previous months.

I started with Artemis by Andy Weir. Jazz yearns to live in comfort in Artemis, the moon's only town, so she supplements a porter's low wage with smuggling, and when a contact offers her a million to carry out acts of sabotage, she goes along with it. Needless to say, nothing goes to plan, and then people are killed and her life is threatened. A short book, easily read, chock-full of detailed science and technology which largely went over my head but slipped down easily, and if the plot seems contrived it was cleverly put together, and the voice of the first person narration was fun.

That was followed by a non-fiction book, Operation Mincemeat by Ben Macintyre. The true story of the WWII deception to convince the Germans that the Allies would attack Sardinia and the Balkans, not – as was actually intended – Sicily in 1943, and fake documents are planted on a dead body which is washed up on the Spanish coast where Germans have their spies. Well written and gripping.

Then I turned to fantasy with A Darker Shade of Magic by VE Schwab, which is set in a world(s) where there are three Londons overlying each other with differing amounts of magic, and our hero, Kell, is one of only two magical adepts who can travel between them. It's apparently not a YA book, but to me it screamed YA, from the age and rather tiring self-obsession of the protagonists, to the simple writing and lack of complexity, and I rather struggled to get through it. Some clever ideas -- not least an infinitely reversible coat -- but the magic system didn't seem either new or profound and both characterisation and plot felt limited.

Because of a lack of enthusiasm for reading the Schwab, I alternated reading it with a couple of re-reads, both of which were excellent: Witches Abroad by Terry Pratchett where a fairy godmother leaves her wand to Magrat, and a city is ruled by a witch who intends every fairy story shall come true, a princess shall marry a frog-prince and everyone will live happily ever after, if she has to kill everyone to ensure it happens; and Strong Poison by Dorothy L Sayers, the novel which introduces Harriet Vane to Lord Peter Wimsey when she's on trial for the murder of her former lover.

I returned to fantasy with Spinning Silver by Naomi Novik, a riff on Rumpelstiltskin set in a medieval analogue of somewhere like Ukraine where the daughter of a Jewish moneylender boasts too loudly she can turn silver into gold, and she's held to it by a winter king. A deeply feminist novel in which three young women move out of the roles allotted to them and act together to produce their own happy endings. Highly recommended. (Werthead reviewed it here Spinning Silver by Naomi Novik but I can't help thinking there's a whiff of male condescension in the attitude to Novik's making an epic of it instead of keeping it small scale. The only criticism I'd agree with is the issue of all the POVs being in first person, but in the event there was only one scene which caused me any confusion -- all the others were clear within a couple of sentences.)

Then it was back to crime with another Dorothy L Sayers and The Unpleasantness at the Bellona Club in which LPW investigates the death of a general found in his club on Armistice day. Neat, but not the cleverest or wittiest of her books.

And I finished the month with The Last Smile in Sunder City by Luke Arnold, the first of what will undoubtedly be a series which is being touted as another Rivers of London or Dresden Files, but which to me is greatly inferior to both. He gets full marks for the very different milieu, with an invented world in which magic has been destroyed leaving all the fae, vampires, werewolves, banshees etc etc literally powerless, but I found the mix of would-be hard-boiled noir detective language/snappy one-liners with the main character's relentless self-pity very off-putting, as was his stupidity, the author's dumping of backstory and his heavy-handed moralising about the human's responsibility for the death of magic.

just don’t dare to call it “time travel” A sometimes fun and sometimes somber and usually thought provoking romp through history.

"The Shadow Weave," book 2 of the spell weaver series by Annette Marie.
This series, at least so far, is not what I expected from Annette Marie. Urban fantasy that falls quite close to the paranormal romance end of that continuum. Worth reading so far. We'll see if it remains so.

Sounds very up my alley, like Kafka’s TheTrial.
