Discussion Thread -- May 2021-- 75 Word Story Challenge

Congratulations to Daysman!

I voted for TJ, but there were quite a few that could have won the vote, it was the need to translate the stupendous opening combined with the simplicity of the ending.

It made me laugh.

Thanks to Chris for the vote. I know I won it by random chance, but that it was one of his two favourites is always something that feels extra special.

Congrats @Daysman!!!

----

My story had some convoluted beginnings. I was thinking about how difficult it is to interpret the Bible in some places because of it's use of metaphor, some of which have lost all or almost all historical context. In thinking of that I also remembered the episode The New Generation, where Picard is purposely shipwrecked by aliens so that they can establish communication. The aliens (as I'm sure almost everyone here remembers) seemed to mostly communicate their thoughts by metaphors, never by direct descriptions. I've also lately been thinking about how inane some of our common metaphors are going to sound given sufficient passage of time. (Boob tube anyone?) That would be doubly true if you did not understand much about human context. So I took some commentary about a political debate and had my poor alien try to understand what was meant. ---- The last line sort of wrote itself.

May I offer my congrats to @Daysman - great story. When I first read it I knew it would be a contender. Made me chuckle.
As it happens I was in the mood for light hearted this month so yours @Daysman
@bedyak
@Starbeast
@Mr Orange
@Peter V
@M. Robert Gibson
were my faves this time round. With the quiet humour of @Peter V getting my vote.

As ever a vast array of great content, super stuff one and all.

My thanks to 10, yes 10 peoples for various mentions and listings. (Hopefully got everyone.)

@Mr Orange
@The Judge
@Bren G

Extremely happy with that.
It was said recently, but I will repeat. It is important that we all try to mention at least a few standouts, especially in the 75 as votes are very scarce. Mine for instance was a big fat zero, so if no one had expanded their thoughts I would have no clue the story was quite well received. Thanks again.
Just need to stumble onto that spark to tip them into votes, always next time.

Wasn’t sure where to post this. It is very much about the challenges, so I decided here was ok?

It seems those that enter these challenges come from quite a varied level of writing background.
Some are published authors and have whole complete works to their name. Others always seem to be in the middle of yet another expansive creation. Or have taken this months 75 (or 300) from a larger work or idea they were already working on.

Who else out there is like me, and finds the only creative writing they do each month is actually just here in the challenges!
Actually, the stories I post on here are the only ones I have ever written.
Just wondering.

*Felix Culpa ......... An idea that shows how perfectly rational theological logic can bring forth a really ignorant conclusion.

I've been writing for years, but never taken it to the next level, that is thinking about getting published. I even signed up with a creative writing course, but never saw it through to its completion. I also used to have a monthly 'challenge' with a friend where we would give each other a title and could write about anything

Recently I've been going through all my old scribblings and putting them on my website. However, I haven't written anything much else recently.

So, these here challenges are the only creative writing I'm doing, but I do intend writing that blockbuster series which will bring me fame and fortune, but I'll do it tomorrow, I've got 100 anonymous words to write today ;)

I've been doing the 75's, 100's and 300's since I joined. They are the first shared / public / semi-competitive works I have been involved with, so have been an entirely new concept for me. More often then not, I am scrambling to find the time to squeeze them in around the scheduled times I dedicate to my WIP (not sure if the extra pressure benefits them or not).

Publishing my WIP is still a (pipe)dream of mine, although its probably not going to be the successful career I hoped it would be when I was younger. I think I will still publish them regardless and they will get either picked up, a belated cult following, or buried beneath a thick layer of electronic dust in a kindle store somewhere.

Either way, I love the challenges. They have massively helped me develop my craft, particularly my ability to edit and be succinct and try different styles / formats.

Long may they continue.
