DISCUSSION THREAD -- 300 Word Writing Challenge #54 (July 2024)

Congrats to @Astro Pen

Huge thanks to @Mad Alice for the vote.

Catch you lot next quarter. Don't break anything in the meantime. Ciao. :giggle:

Wow! What a ride that was. I'm not usually a nail biter but I won't be playing classical guitar for a couple of weeks. :giggle:
Voting wise I knew @Peter V was right behind me but I voted for his excellent story anyway and took that chance.
A chance that took a surprising turn when @The Judge voted @Peter V and @Parson to level lead late last night, which could have meant a three way tie breaker. Yikes. (Would that be the first in a 300 worder?)

Re: the story. I worked in psychology for years and you see many things,(although this one was not based on an individual). A lot of my experimental film and short stories are about seeing the world from such different viewpoints. Paranoia, autism, OCD, dyslexia etc'. Hopefully bringing a little understanding, along the way, of the invisible challenges some people face daily.

Thanks for the votes from @mosaix @Parson @Victoria Silverwolf @THX1138 @elvet @Ursa major @johnnyjet @Hugh @Daysman and @Christine Wheelwright.
Well done Peter and Parson too, both stories touched many hearts.

Congrats Astro Pen! Commiserations Peter and Parson!

In our third ever 300 Worder we actually had a four-way tie break -- TDZ (who won the tie-break, as she always did!), alchemist, mosaix and The Spurring Platty.

Congratulations, Astro Pen! Fine story.
Well done Parson and Peter V for writing fine tales that helped make the last few hours of voting such a nail-biter. A good Challenge all around.

I don't know if it's interesting to hear thoughts on what a person intended with their entry, but what the heck. My story came to me voice-heavy, and seemingly light and frothy (silly), but with a few hints (I hope) of deeper, more ominous issues than its surface easily revealed. A little something on the coming AI situation, but more, immigration in the States, and how a certain part of the country wants to attack it (Project 2025). Any-who, enough of that. Looking forward to the next Challenge image reveal, in early October. Again, congrats Astro Pen! CC

I was hoping my piece would strike a chord with fans of the Goon Show. Of course there were both cultural and age related risks involved. I couldn't resist it however as, as I was writing it, the in-roll voices of Harry Secombe and Peter Sellers were echoing round my head and urging me on.

With regard to (not actually necessary) links/references to the picture....

My idea came from a (feeble) pun on the last word of the second line of the poem, Leisure by W.H.Davies --

What is this life if, full of care,
We have no time to stand and stare.
-- and while the story is, on the surface, more about the first four words of the poem than anything to do with stairs (hence the title), it's also about the raising** of consciousness in whatever it is that thinks itself as being at one with the temple.

** - I'd have said "elevating", but one rarely sees stairs in an elevator (although many elevators are contained within flights*** of stairs).

*** - Oh... and, of course, the story is a flight of fancy....

Good evening!

I apologize if I've been absent from the forum, but I follow it whenever I can. Many patients, work, and I'm also finishing my second book. I appreciate all the comments here in the forum and I'd like to explain my votes:

@Parson - This story resonated with me deeply, and I really liked it!
@AnRoinnUltra - I found this story sweet and different. I really enjoyed the abstraction.
@Peter V - Deep, engaging, and very tasteful.

All the authors were sensational, and each one took me to a different place!
Congratulations to all of us!
