Never heard of The Marathon Photograph. The Other Worlds Of... is eye-popping.

Might be getting a mix of anthropology books (my major) and science fiction books soon. I like world-building, especially when it comes to culture. I'm just not very good at it myself. But the authors I read are good at it!

The friend who sent those 23 Simaks and the Brunner and I have been sending books back and forth. Below is a picture of a bunch of books that another friend sent last year. Most of these I sent to my Simak-Brunner friend. Don't think of this traffic in books as a trade. Just keeping books moving. My Simak buddy had, I gather, read and reread at least some of the Simaks so much that he need only look at them to remember the stories. He does like van Vogt a lot.

My second last book haul was The Heart of What Was Lost by Tad Williams. In preparation for reading it, I was going to reread Memory, Sorrow and Thorn. So I went searching for the books, and can't find them. I either lent them out, or gave them away. So this month's shop was repurchasing the series. Also got The Scarlet Tides by David Hair.

Yeah, I've been doing the same thing, mostly with sf megapacks by less known authors. At 99 cents you can hardly go wrong. There's two more I want to order when I get home but I can't recall their names.

Found this at Goodwill the other day:

This isn't my copy however, wish it were. Mine's pretty beat up but still worth the $2.99 I paid for it. Couldn't log in to Photo Bucket to last night to upload a scanned image so I copied this from ebay. 1954 British hardback, all stories from the magazine Startling Stories and contains a Jack Vance story that doesn't sound familiar, at least by its title, "Noise."

Picked this up at Barnes & Noble tonight with a gift card I got for my birthday last month:

Though each topic is dealt with quickly they seem well researched and presented in a style that doesn't induce tedium.

Disappointment amidst the joy, I returned from Devon tonight (visiting my Dad) and found two of my recent purchases on the doormat.

One (The Martian Chronicles) was fine, the other less so.

Permutation City was described as "Condition: Used - Very Good - The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged."

It turned out to be "Condition: Used - to defend the previous owner from an attack by a wild animal"

Grumpy email sent.

Oh dear. I had one like that via Amazon once but as it had come from the States, thought it would be too much hassle and expense to return something that only cost minimum plus postage charge.

This week picked up two Robin Hobbs novels which completed the 'Rainwilds' four-set, and a Diana Wynne Jones' Chrestomanci novel, Conrad's Fate. All pretty cheap from charity shops.
