Book Hauls!

I was supposed to do an amazing 300 km backpacking trip through the Highlands, but COVID kinda ruined that, so now I'm in a serious Scotland mood, even dyed my hair bright ginger (It's gorgeous !!), so of course my next book haul is the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon

Rainy day on holiday, so went to Hay on Wye, as you do. Picked up a couple of Barrington Bayley novels: The Soul of the Robot, and The Grand Wheel.

I think my favourite bookshop in the town is the Cinema Bookshop, a huge warren inside an old cinema, with a fantastic selection. Easy to miss since it is slightly outside the main drag. My son was thrilled to discover that they had recently acquired the library of the late James Nicholas, former Archdruid of the Welsh Eisteddfod. This so far unsorted and very eclectic collection of Welsh language books from the 19-20th century occupies a wall of the uppermost room in the shop. I more or less had to drag my son away after he had picked out 10 or so interesting books, which were much more highbrow than my purchases, and a fraction of the price of English language equivalents. He would happily have browsed that wall of books, of whose existence he had no prior idea, all afternoon. This is something that is missing from online purchasing. The proprietors were delighted that someone had taken an interest.

An underrated author, is Mr Bayley. Let me know how you go with The Grand Wheel, as its one of his I have, but have not yet read, I think. Garments of Caean are Collision with Chronos are both excellent.

Reader’s Digest hardback doesn’t say condensed or abridged anywhere I can see so assume it’s complete. Second hand copy, brand new condition, $2.

I've much enjoyed that relatively little-read novel by RLS, Dask, and I hope you do too.

Leopold Schwarzschild's The Red Prussian, a biography of Karl Marx using newly-available archives.

I was just back in my Mum's house and discovered what I thought was a long lost book. When queried about it my Mum said she found it at the back of an old TV unit she was getting rid of.

Well this is annoying. I ordered a book from AbeBooks and got an email from World of Books (the source) telling me the book sustained damage in the warehouse, would I like a refund or different book? They said they will get it sent within 24 hours. So I selected a different book from around the same price, but they haven't followed it up...There were only 2 copies of the book available...The original book was only cheap (3.60) but that's not the point is it.

Decided to re-read the Nine Princes so re-bought and one of my face authors is Paul Cain and their is 7 unread stories by myself in the anthology, now that made my day, just need it to arrive!

I know there are a couple of U.S. publishers doing that. It used to be reserved for classics and more mainstream fiction, but A Head Full of Ghosts and a few mysteries I've picked up have similar additions. I think to some extent they're appealing to book clubs.

I really liked Dame Cicely's A Coffin for King Charles, which could be considered a sequel to this book, The King's Peace, which I found as a freebie at the library today. I'm delighted, but Tess is unimpressed.
