Book Hauls!

Today bought....

Storeys From The Old Hotel - Gene Wolfe *collection of some of Gene's lesser known fiction. Winner World fantasy Award 1989.

Before They Are Hanged - Book 2 - Joe Abercrombie

Today I purchased my first HPL book. That's right folks, I've read a number of the stories but never owned a single book by this great author. Shock Horror I hear?...:):

Tales Of HP Lovecraft , selected by Joyce Carol Oates incl. The Outsider, The Music Of Erich Zann, The Rats In The Walls, The Shunned House, The Call Of Cthulhu, Colour Out Of Space, The Dunwich Horror, At The Mountains Of Madness, The Shadow Over Innsmouth & The Shadow Out Of Time.

Also a parcel arrived today from the cat, thanks heaps to Nesa!!...:) containing:

The Shadow At The Bottom Of The World - Thomas Ligotti. Unbelievably Ligotti is never seen on any bookshops in this country, which is a crime in itself!! Hence my added excitment at having received this book.

From The Dust Returned - Ray Bradbury. Being a very recent Bradbury convert I very much look forward to reading this.

Can't say that I'm surprised about the Ligotti, actually. He doesn't seem to get great distribution around here, either... or maybe it's the fact that his books are often sold out before they even hit print...

As for the Bradbury... I'm curious what you'll think of that one, especially as some portions of that novel reach back to the earliest part of Ray's career, and were published as stories in his first collection, Dark Carnival.....

On the Lovecraft --   ! (That do fer ya?:p )

Unfortunately for us it's a case of the book never even reaching the shelf in the first place.

I'll let you know my thoughts on the Bradbury book.

Cheers....:)

How about this? The charity shop round the corner has just got in what looks like someones 1960s/1980s SF collection of paperbacks, including lots of Simak, RAH, Asimov, ACC, etc, at the same time as they are selling P/bs off at 20p (about 40 US cents) each, and buy one get one free to reduce stock!!
Hobbled in there yesterday on the way to the chemist, and for the only money I had spare, (20p, luckily), I got Ring around the Sun, by Cliff Simak, 1967 4-Square P/b, and Red Planet, by RAH, 1973 Pan P/b , both immaculate.
Guess where I'm off to later!!:D

Wow, wish I was there :) I really wouldn't mind fattening up my collection of works by Simak.

I got the following in the mail today from Nesa. Thanks Nesa :)

Tigana - Guy Gavriel Kay

Just what is the exact address of this bookshop Pyan? I think we need to know.

Mine! Mine! Gerroff!!:D

I live in what was a village incorporated into Southampton years ago, and when a lot of the shops closed due to improved transport to the city centre, the charity shops moved in. At the moment, I have no less than seven within 100 yards of my house, all carrying a book section, so every so often, I take a trawl along the row to see what's come in. Yesterday, the net was bursting at the seams!!:D

Today I picked up at a sale....

The Longest Way Home - Robert Silverberg

Caught in a rebel uprising while visiting his relatives in House Getfen, 15-year-old Joseph, heir to House Keilloran, flees a massacre and undertakes a journey across his world to reach his home. In danger from pursuing rebels, Joseph also finds himself exposed to the unfamiliar world of the Indigenes, a race of nonviolent sentient beings who coexist with the dominant human race. The latest novel by sf veteran and master raconteur Silverberg (The Majipoor Chronicles) relates the coming-of-age of a young man raised in luxury who learns resilience and compassion in the face of adversity.

No, Gollum, no! The Book Depository have books at Amazon prices or less, and they ship for free! I get my books within 5-7 days!

More on topic, I just ordered a small pile of books from there.

Rendezvous With Rama by Arthur C. Clarke
H.P. Lovecraft Omnibus 1 by H.P. Lovecraft
The Forever War by Joe Haldeman
The Sirens of Titan by Kurt Vonnegut
The Blade Itselff by Joe Abercrombie
Heroes Die by Matthew Woodring Stover
Trading In Danger by Elizabeth Moon

I'm quite looking forward to getting stuck into The Forever War, Number 1 in the S.F. Masterworks series. I've also heard many good things about The Blade Itself.

I was out and about it town today (for want of something to do, really. Oh, and to buy some random tea!) and I popped into Waterstones (can't resist). And I came across a book...with an "Explict content" sticker on it. Now, you know me by now...that's just crying out to be read! :D It's Haunted by Chuck Palahniuk. I skimmed through it and read a bit of the afterword and got a taste of why it's got an explict sticker on it. :D

Guts, from Haunted is posted in full on his website - I don't think I'll bother buying it, Hoops - I feel quite ill.:(

Yes, Guts is the first one. Apparently people fainted when they heard it being read out by Chuck. Mostly men. A section of the Afterword gave me a clue as to why it was mostly men. I'll let you know my own reaction when I read it :D
