Brienna's "Last" word

I concur, Stannis is a good guess for the following reason. Revenge seems paramount to Stoneheart. She has (in this life or the previous) decided that all her dear children are dead and so she's getting as much revenge as possible. If Stoneheart thought that Stannis might have been in any way responsible for any of her children's deaths, then she might send Brienne off to murder Stannis. But even if Brienne is cut loose, we still have to see if she'll even survive her present wounds let alone be able to take up a sword again in battle.

I know I'm draggging an old thread up buuuuuut....

I think she says "Stannis."

Why?

I'm in the process of rereading the books from start to middle and have just come to Renly's death in aCoK. Brienne is talking with Catelyn about what she will do after leaving her when they have arrived at Riverrun and says that she swore to kill Stannis no matter what "I swore a vow. Three times i swore. You heard me."

After offering to serve Catelyn Brienne says "...And I think that, when the time comes, you wil not try and hold me back. Promise me that. That you will not hold me back from Stannis."

Catelyn's reply is "When the time comes, I will not hold you back."

Good catch there. I had completely forgotten about that. But would that be enough to jar unCat's memory?

I think "Stannis" and their shared moment in the past is a little weak reason to make Stoneheart pause. Yes they shared that moment way, way, way way way back when, and it sounds like a good reason if you're shuffling back and forth between the books looking for connections (which I have done), but in her current Avenging Angel(demon) stage (don't forget the words of the red priest) that statement shouldn't be enough to stop Heartless from being the violent, vengeful, born-again killer GM is painting her to be. I just don't think such a momentary exchange would carry that much emotional weight under these final circumstances. It may happen, but I'd be disappointed with the big G for going there.

In the heat of this moment, I think only naming one of the daughters would be enough of an emotional kick to halt the (long overdue and hopefully soon anyway) execution.

Stoneheart has no emotion. Stoneheart? She's only concerned with "justice" anymore and keeping her word is part of that.

Interesting...I don't see it that way. I see it as she's only interested in venveance, not justice, which is why the "Robin Hood" bunch have become meaner and uglier looking (and the red priest is so upset).

The Lightning Lord was interested in justice, and they were all happy little campers. But what GM gives with one hand, he takes away with the other, and now we have StoneEverything slitting throughts.

I'm fairly sure that's what TSW meant by the "" around justice.

Can I say, I really hate the fact I don't like the BWB anymore.

Catelyn, dead or alive, screws up everything, lol.

Theres justice, then theres justice without compassion. I think one of the major themes of the novel is the extremes of honor. Ned vs Stannis for example, Ned possessed compassion and Stannis didnt. So now ya got the juxtaposition of Stoneheart and Berics ways of doing buisness and quite frankly Catelyn has no qualms with anything anymore except her need for justice (ie revenge in this case). Shes like a bad Steven Seagal movie at this point, okay theres no such thing as a good Steven Seagal movie....

So

So maybe her earlier oath would stay her hand...maybe, I dont know how deep
