Dark days for Stargate SG-1 fans?

Like most people on here Anni I could not agree with you more I also think that the System Lords had more potential and wish that the writters had taken a different route with this.

I guess I have a problem with drooling, and I have trouble understanding why people do it. It wouldn't make me feel better or make me like a show any more. But I can see that some folk need to do it. Perhaps they perceive that there is some element missing from their own lives and personalities which is fulfilled by watching and applauding others who seem to be fulfilling their lives.... I don't know. That's getting into the human psyche very deeply and I am not qualified to do that. But I do know it's why we have heroes and heroines and why we insist on placing people on pedestals.... it's also why we greatly enjoy watching them fall off!

This is the only other thing that I wanted to comment on, I feel as a sometimes drooler that the coment you made was a little unfair.
I did not just start watching SG1 to drool over the stars of the show. I started to watch it because of my interest in the other aspects of the show.
I will admit to anyone that I like Daniel Jackson the character because of his personality, his intelligence and many more things besides his looks. I also understand that its Daniel Jackson that I like and not the actor Michael Shanks as I don't even know that much about him ;)
I do also feel that its a little unfair for you to say that we drool over these people because we have something missing from our own lives.
I have a "normal" life with a job, friends, family and other interests besides scifi shows.

As nic has said I do value your opinions and views and take all you say on board and I enjoy some of the debates that you enter in.

But also I do like to take part in less serious topics and debates all in the name of fun.
I also like to think that I can join in with the droolers and the non droolers:D

In short I like to think that this is what these fourms are all about, listening to other peoples points of views and letting people have their own opinions;)

I don't wish to upset anyone here and all these comments are just my opinion.

I too hope to go to the UK convention and hope to have many chats and debates with anyone that does not share my opinions (just in the name of fun)

Pamie...... I appreciate everything you say, but please..... read my posting again. I said:

'Perhaps they PERCEIVE that there's something missing'

I did not, and have not said that there IS something missing from your lives. Try not to misunderstand or have a knee jerk reaction. Nobody is saying that you personally don't have a fulfilling life. I am sure that you do. The drooling is fine..... drool away as much as you wish, that is your choice. All I am saying is that no, I have never hero worshipped and no, to Nic, I have never had male or female role models..... and that included my mother and father who were completely uninterested in me at all. I learnt to do for myself and be all that I could be, for me. I probably sought approval by doing rather than copying. That in me is a fault, and it has taken me nearly 45 years to actually approve of myself and like who I am.

I don't need to look at Sam Carter for a strong female or any other female as a role model. I have done my own stint as a strong female. I have even taken life in the name of being a strong military female. Something I am not particularly proud of now. Now I would choose another way. In fact I have been strong to such an extent that even now, sick with a fairly long term illness, the people around me still expect me to be strong, when I could do with someone to lean on instead of being leant on.

Anyway, that's personal stuff really...... I still maintain that the show could contain everything that the diehard fans want in it. I do like character developments and believe in it, but I didn't want the show to have to lose any other aspect in order for it to take place. And although you and many others do agree with me to an extent, there are many, and you must have seen the postings, who prefer this aspect over everything else. The men want the action, the women want the character development and a few of us wanted to have the original concept at least applied to some degree.

I too take a full role in the fun parts of the forum, up to and including baling out the drool from the Daniel's Boddy thread and doing the Cronos and Heru-Ur clone testing!!!!

Pamie...... I thought you weren't able to go the convention, have you changed your mind?

something that originally attracted me to this show was the near infinite possibilies of it all. They have access to a variety of different planets (and apparently dimensions as well) where anything can happen. They could show any way of life, not just our own narrow take on it.

it would be wonderful if the writer's would allow the show to live up to this potential. let's see some real aliens and not just the myriad of humanoid life forms that sg-1's run across so far.

This show is unique in that it's not limited to a city or a ship or pretty much any local. they could do anything. and i like that idea. That is the reason i started watching this show. the characters are what made me a fan. The combination is what keeps me watching.

I would love to meet you too, and you wouldn't BE alone would you? I am definitely going, Caza is obviously going. I know the money is a consideration but it would be just like any other weekend away.

Do try to come......

I'll be alone.... in that I don't have a boyfriend/husband/partner at present and I wouldn't want them to be with me on something like this if I did!!

 I know what you mean. Although my boyfriend would love to come down with me, he's really not into scifi at all (I've only just got him to watch Voyager, and that's nearly finished now!).
In short, he wouldn't have fun and therefore I wouldn't have fun!

However, the idea of coming down to the convention from Newcastle on my own is a bit scary! I've never done anything alone... maybe it's time?...

Oh please DO come Nic..... I'll even meet you at Kings Cross if you like just so you don't have to go through London on your own. I've been travelling from since being a very small child so I've never been afraid, but I do know that other people are. Trust me, once you've done it once, you'll not be afraid to do it twice!!

Faint heart ne'er won fair lady you know!!!

:D :D :laugh2:

Ive just checked out the Wolfevent site.
It says the convention is to be held at the "Heathrow Park Hotel".
I've been trying to find the hotel on the web, but this is the only address I can find:

http://london-heathrow.crowneplaza.com/

Do you know is that's the place?

Thanks Anni x x
Lordy have you seen the prices?
Plus, when you think about the ticket price and train ticket :erm:

I'm gonna have to have a LONG think about this!
If I do go, I think it will have to be very last minute.

Nic..... If you do decide remmber that there is National Express at £25 return, if you are a student you can get it cheaper still. Failing you not wanting to travel by bus... (it is a 7 hour trip), if you book seven days prior to travel you can get something called an Apex train fare which cuts the price down drastically. Even a Saver or a Supersaver return is much cheaper, but you are restricted to travel times with these tickets. British Rail won't tell you if you don't ask. Ask about special deals to London. the hotel is a little prohibitive and if I was staying at home and travelling in to Heathrow each day, I would invite you, but I have decided to stay the whole weeked instead. The convention rate is £59.50 per night as opposed to the £123 on the website.

I can't think of anything else to tell you really.

My Anni, you know your stuff!
£60 a night is ALOT more appealing.
And I think a return train ticket's between £25-£50 - I'm not a bus person, if you know what I mean :dead: :p

BTW, thanks for offering to put me up for the weekend if you ahd of been staying at home. You're a kind person.:star:

I travel a lot both inside and outside of the UK, and as for inviting you to stay had I been travelling in, you are very welcome, I know all too well what its like to be a struggling student with little or no money. It's really frustrating. and then there are old ladies like myself who are able to do it apparently without batting an eyelash!! when you get older the inclinations are not as strong but you are more likely to be in a financial position to indulge yourself, when you're young the inclincations are passionate but you have no money. You'd think we'd manage to achieve some sort of balance and harmony wouldn't you?

LOL

Yeah I'm like nic as I grew up with three very protective brothers and some good friends I have never done anything like this on my own.....although I am lucky that its only about a two hour drive from me I know that I will be very nervous going on my own as Im a shy person at best.
But as Anni has said faint heart ne'er won fair lady and I do really want to go.......
So I think I will find out a little more and then I might just book it;)
So go on nic if Im going to go you really have to as I would love us all to meet up just think of the debates we can all have:D

I discuss many aspects on many threads in a few forums, and I say the same every time. Stargate started off on a promise of a show with a wonderfully menacing, mysterious and highly dangerous enemy, and has turned into a Space Soap Opera in which the dangerous enemy have now become cariacatured, hilarious, camp and fit for nothing but pantomime while SG1 skip gaily through the Stargate and whack hell out of every single Jaffa and System Lord in sight. No menace, no mystery, no exploration, no real venturing into why and how we all developed..... no alien cultures really. None of what originally attracted me to the movie and the series. But I do keep watching in the hopes that they have a mental aberration and actually put something like that in, instead of it becoming "A Day Out Through the Stargate with Jack, Sam, Daniel and Teal'c" :D

I can agree with this statement to some extent. I have, for some time, been complaining that the show needs to add some controversial subjects. The writers need to stop wrapping every ep up nice and neatly. And they need to keep their villains, villainous! {Ever notice how S L O O O O W the Jaffa are? Half of them are already dead by the time some of them even raise their weapon to fire.}

And did you see Fri.'s ep.? They may as well have put a big red bow on it! Another Nice and Neat ending.

For the most part the show is really good, like the ep Beneath The Surface--it actually had a plot and a moral! There have been a few mental aberrations, though, like Urgo. That was just an excuse, IMHO, for Peter to get his dad work.

I will continue to watch, mainly because of Jack/RDA and the hope that the SGC will come across something they can't solve by the end of the ep or it's sequel.

ya that part about the Jaffa being dead before they even raise their wepons seems a bit silly. In the pilot episode, didn't they only kill on Jaffa even with all their fire power? What happened to the strength of the serpant guard uniform? No point in wearing it if it doesn't have any affect anymore.

soory, one more little pet peeve. It disturbs me how easily Teal'c can fire on & kill his own kind when it's his own kind he's trying ot convince to be free from the G.
