Spider-Man 2 (2004)

Re: Late opinion on Spiderman 2. It sucked.

You thought it was emotionally complex and funny? Spiderman 2? As for my complaints, they may be trivial to you, but they are after all my opinion.

I go to see a superhero movie expecting the elements of the comic to make a somewhat successful transition to the big screen. When changes are needlessly put in, it becomes a bit confusing and stupid for fans of the series. Two dimensional villians are what superhero comics are all about. I'm supposed to believe that Doc Ocks arms were the real evil? Since when? Otto was always unhinged, even before he gained his arms.

And um...the webbing...that is not anything new..that was covered in the first film and carried over, I'm talking about the sequel.

For Doc Ock arms, since some story in 90s, IIRC, in the comics. Don't worry, Spiderman 3 could be about Clone saga.
And, on this one I agree with Poly, as a movie Spiderman 2 was well above most comics adaptations, and above most movies produced in 2004.
Now, as in terms of loyalty to the comics that's another question, but these days not even recent comics are loyal to the character. So...

Re: Late opinion on Spiderman 2. It sucked.

I agree that basically all superhero movies suck...my biggest complaint about this one was that I actually did enjoy Spiderman (for the most part) and everyone raved about this film. I normally don't fall for hype, but I guess I was expecting too much.

The clone saga is what really killed the modern spiderman stories, I must admit...my knowledge goes as far as the Maximum Carnage series. I know Scarlet Spider and Jackal were around quite some time before then, but when they started the whole spidey quitting thing...it became too much effort to enjoy them anymore.

The one with Max Von Sydow as Ming? And the queen soundtrack? I love that film.

I didn't like Spiderman 2, but I was never hot on the comics too. Teeny photoromance mixed with a few action setups doesn't do it for me.
Amongst films based on comic book characters, I liked Richard Donner's Superman and Tim Burton's Batman movies. Batman Returns was especially brilliant in its good parts only it got a bit muddled between it's truly anguished moments and the exchanging silly one-liners moments.

The new Batman film has some interesting actors but I'll reserve judgement till I see he final product. Christian Bale's voiceover in the trailer I saw once seemed a bit too deadpan and I'm not quite happy with what Christopher Nolan achieved in Insomnia. But anyway, this does sound decent on the whole and I like that they're going to use Ras-Al Ghul as one of the villains.

I'm however more excited about the upcoming Superman film. Bryan Singer's comment that the Donner films have an influence on how he envisions his version of the Man of Steel hold grand promise for this old-skool fan.

Oh no another flying boy scout fan. ;)
At least the cast is good, and Bryan Singer already proved his capacity in the comics-to-movies realm.

I didn't like too much Spiderman 2 either. Why did they make no. 2 after all ? To earn more money from it ?

On the other hand, I liked Spiderman 1.

Re: Late opinion on Spiderman 2. It sucked.

And lets not forget peter once again agonising about being spiderman, and having to recieve a posthumous lecture from Uncle Ben.
Most overused line in any film to date:
With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility
both films relied far to much on CG and used the 'awww shame' scenes with the citezens of New York standing up for Spidey in the crunch to nauseating effect. I love comic book movies. No matter how badly done, but this was exceptionaly bad.

Note my vote for Best comic book film also goes to Flash Godron

Nooooo nooooooo :p

So long as they're grossing $200+million in the box office, you better believe more Spiderman films will follow.

Re: Late opinion on Spiderman 2. It sucked.

Actually, Spiderman 2 was much better than the original, but I can't understand his attraction to Kirsten Dunst. When she goes in to kiss Peter (just before the car comes flying in), the close-up of MJ on the big screen scared me more than anything I saw in The Grudge. They should have used CGI on her.

Re: Late opinion on Spiderman 2. It sucked.

Oh ya, MJ in the comics is a much more glam and oomphy character than this...you'd think Hollywood'll go for that sort of thing.

Number 2 was a huge improvement over the first. American critics loved the first but it had shoddy special effects and the story was not quite there. But Raimi nailed the second one with Peter's backstory.

You're kidding. I was dissapointed with the second. You knew where it was going whether you'd seen it before, knew what should happen or anything. The first, I loved much more. Yes, you always knew Spiderman would win, and some of the special effects weren't top quality, but overall, it was better.
