The Revived Tolkien Trivia

Hildigard Took died young. The Lord of the Rings, Appendix C, "Took of Great Smials".

Welcome to the thread, Corbier!

The question contains a specific age, and Hildigard's entry in the Took's family tree has no dates attached - so I'm afraid you'll have to look elsewhere for the answer...;)

I hope this is what you mean, Pyan. Otherwise I'll have to give up!

But Aragorn was only two years old when Arathorn went riding against the Orcs with the sons of Elrond, and he was slain by an orc-arrow that pierced his eye; and so he proved indeed short-lived for one of his race, being but sixty years old when he fell.
The Lord of the Rings, Appendix A: I The Númenorean Kings, (v) here follows a part of the tale of Aragorn and Arwen.

That's the one!

A sexagenarian bell goes to you, plus an opportunity to baffle the rest of us...:)

Yay! Thanks, I suppose. *tinkles the bell so it rings for sixty years* :D

What couldn't come undone until it was commanded to do so?

Magic cuff-links?

Gandalf, Gandalf! Good gracious me! Not the wandering wizard that gave Old Took a pair of magic diamond studs that fastened themselves and never came undone till ordered?

The Hobbit, Ch 1, An Unexpected Party

Well, well...

Who, specifically, preferred hunting to farming?

Well, indeed.

Not sure by the very quote if this is specific enough, but my answer is the Fallohides....

The Fallohides, the least numerous, were a northerly branch. They were more friendly with Elves than the other Hobbits were, and had more skill in language and song than in handicrafts; and of old they preferred hunting to tilling.

P.S. My answer for the young death in their 61st year was Eorl the Young. A guess, of course, because I don't have the month of his birth or death.

You've hunted down the answer, Mr Fallowgrimhideward! A novelty bell-shaped carrot to you, and it's your turn...

*munch munch munch*

Tastes like cram. :D

Thank 'ee kindly all the same, Py.

Much as hobbits were involved in the creation of the game of golf, they also bore witness to am early bowling incident. Name the pins.

Hmmm...

And by the way:

I refer my esteemed colleague to the answer previously given, #2042 above.
Come on mate, you know me: when did I ever pose queries that would allow "guesswork" answers?...:D

Were it the spiders in Mirkwood perhaps?

As a boy he [Bilbo] used to practise throwing stones at things, until rabbits and squirrels, and even birds, got out of his way as quick as lightning if they saw him stoop; and even grownup he had still spent a deal of his time at quoits, dart-throwing, shooting at the wand, bowls, ninepins and other quiet games of the aiming and throwing sort-indeed he could do lots of things, besides blowing smoke-rings, asking riddles and cooking, that I haven't had time to tell you about. There is no time now. While he was picking up
stones, the spider had reached Bombur, and soon he would have been dead. At that moment Bilbo threw. The stone struck the spider plunk on the head, and it dropped senseless off the tree, flop to the ground, with all its legs curled up.

Reasonable, Corbier, but not what I'm looking for (although the quote I'm looking for isn't far away from this one...).

Too true. Part and parcel to why I didn't submit my answer. ;)

The pins were thirteen dwarves - and the ball was a deer.

There was a flying sound of hooves on the path ahead. Out of the gloom came suddenly the shape of a flying deer. It charged into the dwarves and bowled them over, then gathered itself for a leap.

awe damnt. that's two paragraphs above where I backed up to. I started when their arrows were flying after it and then Bilbo found a boat, then skipped ahead till there were spiders to fight. *disappoint face*

Almost, hope. Keep trying!

And yes, that's the one Mr. Pyan sir. A bowling-ball shaped bell to you, and the floor for the next question.

Ah theng yow...

Who had a face like windows with shutters inside?

'Saruman is a Wizard,' answered Treebeard. '[...] his face, as I remember it—I have not seen it for many a day—became like windows in a stone wall: windows with shutters inside.'
