The Revived Tolkien Trivia

No apologies whatsoever, and sitting in the back is no fun.

Confession time: The page with the actual calendar was stuck to the preceding page. While looking for the quote, I kept thinking to myself, "Wasn't there a calendar in here somewhere?" Duh. Occasionally, I become my alter ego, Dimward.

Er, right. Moving on...

Where does one find hemlocks and wood-parsley?

Quotes appreciated, but not mandatory. :D

Not dreary, I do tend to miss the notifications half the time.

No idea? Yeah, that's about where I am.
Just read the bit about Treebeards home, and his friend, what's-his-bark the Roan guy. Didn't trip over any mention there.
My first thought was The Shire, no idea why though. Not much for woods except on the boundry where the old forest was.

Bombadill?
Rivendale?
Lothlorian?
The gardens in the halls of healing where Fairimear falls inlove with Eowin?
Any of the hundreds of woods or groves in middle earth? :p

At which point I open up my new video game and start shooting minions :p

lol, still looking :)

Pretty sure the minions won't be of help here, but slaying them won't get you any closer, either. ;)

Listen to the little voice in your head that's whispering, "Re-read your first full paragraph." The WHOLE, first full paragraph (standalone sentences don't count).

OK
I've found it.
But since it's Hope's idea that showed me I'll let her find it.
I nhave no time available to search for another at the moment anyway. :)

I checked around The Hedge, and flicked through Crickhollow and Farmer Maggots place.
Far if you know go for it. Reflected Glory from helping you find it is good enough for me this round. TBH I keep seeing Strider searching the ground with a torch while Sam hovers in the background wringing his hands and muttering to himself every time I look.

Well ok. But you're so close, Hope.
It's in the old forest but after the hedge and before the willow and Bombadil.

They're searching for
The Bonfire Glade
and they find that it appears to have moved.

"No tree grew there, only rough grass and many tall plants: stalky and faded hemlocks and wood parsley, fire-weed seeding into fluffy ashes, and rampant nettles and thistles. A dreary place: but it seemed a charming and cheery garden after the close forest."

'Tis indeed, sir far.

A stalky and faded bell, wreathed in wood parsley and reflected glory, to you, along with all the benefits and privileges that accompany it (see fine print* for details).

Thank you Grim.
I accept this award on behalf of the Hope Far team.

So.
Do you know of anyone who had cats. (I'm keeping to the main books here)
Extra points, if you can quote me something.

Two Towers-Chapter 9 Shelob's Lair said:
...as a man my throw a dainty to his cat (his cat he calls her, but she owns him not) Sauron would send her prisoners that he had no better use for.

From the quote we may discern that men have cats, or we my take Sauron at his word and say that Shelob ( though a spider, not a cat, and not his) is his cat.

Later in that chapter, the Orcs call Sam the Cat and Frodo a Kitten, so if not Men or Sauron, I would guess Elves as the Orcs are ruined Elves. Orcs dont seem the type to keep cats to me, so it must have been the Elves who did it. Which makes more sense than Sauron being silly enough to think that a horrid old spider is a cat. With Sauron and Orcs mocking the practice as references above, one begins to guess that Elves or Men are the one's who have cats.

I like all of this, Hope. It would certainly seem to suggest elves kept cats. (or morelikely cats kept elves as they do with humans.)
But it's not what I was looking for.

In one (**) place, there is a mention of a particular person owning cats. (** If you find another one I'll accept that)
Your ideas come from the darkess in Cirith Ungol. Look for somewhere where cats' eyes might be similarly useful.

"Here, kitty kitty!"

*Grins, coughs, attempts to smother it, then excuses himself, beating a hasty retreat to the Trivia atrium, from whence loud snickering is heard*

Only other place I can think of is murkwood. The only person I know of living there is Ratagast... While it would not suprise me to learn a cat kept him for a pet (I would if I were a cat.) I can't think of where such a thing would come up.

Oh I suppose there are the Wood Elves, but I can't, oh wait. Ok when I get home tonight I'll look something up, but if it's not there I yeald the floor to other searchers

Just a suspicion, but I'm thinking the place where one quote occurs will be murkier than Mirkwood...:D

Queen Berúthiel, who supposedly had many cats?. Haven't read thru all of the Unfinished Tales yet, and am hoping there will be more references to the good Queen (I know of one, but it doesn't have much meat and potatoes to it).

He is surer of finding the way home in a blind night than the cats of Queen Berúthiel.

The Lord of the Rings, The Fellowship of the Ring, Book Two, Chapter IV, A Journey in the Dark

You are quite right Grim.
A jellicle bell for you, if I may mix my references.
And, of course, the next question.
