The Revived Tolkien Trivia

The Hope Grim team accepts. ;)

(It's a good thing that hope tolerates both of us, far!)

All righty then, what are seldom seen in the stoney city?

Quotes enjoyed, but not mandatory.

Horses!

Sorry, Hope. I'd forgotten this was outstanding, and I've been busy elsewhere.

The Pukel men are the ancient stone statues on the way up to Dunharrow and the paths of the dead, above Edoras, aren't they.
So they don't really dwell anywhere and the Paths of the dead are behind them.

On the other hand, Merry noticed that the Wildmen of the Woods, Ghan-Buri-Ghan etc, bore a remarkable resemblance to them and assumed they were the descendants of the original Pukel men.
So in that sense they dwell in Druadan forest and the road to Minas Tirith lie behind them.

Thanks, Hope.
Yes, I think they came into one of mine as a link factor a while ago.

Now to find a new question.

I'm sorry, Grim. I'm very busy.

Where might you keep the price of the shire?
(Quotes appreciated)

PS I'll be unavailable on Thursday and Friday, so if you get it then please continue with the next question.

All the best stuff was kept at the Mathis House wasn't it?

That's where Bilbo's mithrel coat was till he scampered with it to Rivendel. I believe Frodo returned it to its place of honor there when he got back, but can't be certain about that.

In bed atm, so will be looking for quotes in the am. I assume they will be by Gandalf (the Grey) as he says that the coat is worth more than the Shire, though he never told Bilbo so.

If I'm barking up the wrong tree, feel free to pop in with the right one. :)

Well, Hope, you've gone considerably further than I was expecting.
I was only really asking for Galdalf saying that the Mithril coat was worth more than the Shire. You can still find the exact quote if you like.

If my memory serves me correctly Frodo gave it to Sam. ("It goes with Sting" or the other way round), but it probably went back to the mathom house either way.

Anyway, a shiny new ordinary silver bell to you. (It's the best I can do I'm afraid.) And the next question.

Oh! And sleep well!

I think the Matham Houses are my favorite part of Shire lore. I love the birthday tradition that grew up of giving on one's birthday rather than getting. Also that some things get passed about among family and friends, one birthday to the next till they sort of shift to the Matham House. I picture them like old family estates that become something of family museums; full of the old treasures and stories of who courted whom with what, favorite garden finds and recipes, metals of honor, books, essays, art no one wants hanging at their place but has too much family value to be tossed out or made into something else...

I imagine wandering through the various Mathas Houses and smelling the different dusts associated with past hobbits and enjoying the bits of their private lives that are on display for those curious enough to look.

But then I also wonder what future archeologists will make of what remains of our museums when they are found, what of their culture will lead them to make assumptions about ours, and how well those assumptions will match up. Mostly I like imagining what they'll get wrong.

"Time vortexes collected artifacts from all over, so it's difficult for us to place the buildings in question. This was clearly a ______ which they used in their primitive cerimonies to the gods of commerce and industry."

I'm sorry, Grim. I'm very busy.

No apologies, good sir; I was looking for any excuse to type "Shiftgrethor". ;) Am well acquainted with the catch-22 created by time constraints and the urge to place a well-considered challenge.

Ms. hope, I take it we're to fill in the blank?

Lol, no. Apparently the post I put up with the question didn't take. Happens sometimes with my phone-posts.

Name all the villages in the South Farthing.

Oooh, tougher than it seems at first glance. Let's see...assuming the river Shirebourne separates South from East Farthings on the more easterly section where the two farthings share a border...

1. Longbottom
Fellowship of the Ring, Prologue, 2 Concerning Pipe-weed, and The Two Towers, Book Three, The Road to Isengard (a rare text reference, as you noted, hope)

2. Pincup

Fellowship of the Ring, Prologue Map of A Part of the Shire

3. Sarn Ford (we really only know this as a river crossing...it might not be a town, but it's accorded the same prominence as Longbottom on the map)

Fellowship of the Ring, Prologue Map of A Part of the Shire

Several mentions of Hornblowers, and one also of the Sandyman family owning South Farthing land, but of these three, only Longbottom is mentioned as a place where people live.

I've not checked Lost or Unfinished Tales for any other hidden nuggets.

The map I have only shows Pincup, but there are roads to San Ford and Longbottom that point off map. My map is the same as yours A Part of the Shire just before book 1. The little dashed lines _.._.. separating the farthings. I thought it was quite interesting that there was only one collection of homes with a Place name in the whole of the South Farthing while most hobbit metropolises seem to be in East Farthing or West Farthing. North doesn't have any, just a road going off map to Oatbarton. Which is why I picked South.

Three Town Cryer Bells to Misser Grim and the honor of another stumper ;)

Thank 'ee kindly, Ms. hope. my map seems to run out of dashes at the point where it meets the Shirebourne.

Pallid light is my game. What is my name?
