The Revived Tolkien Trivia

Still nothing?
It would be a howling shame If I had to give any more clues.

Why does your last post have me wanting to search for wearwolf-elfs, and why does my sleep-deprived mind want them to be battling vampire-ents in the forests outside the mountains where the Dwarves are sleeping until such time as they are allowed to wake??? Dont Ents and Dwarves come into the world at the same time? What am I thinking?

Wanders back to Pern muttering to herself about crossing fictional realities.

So where and how might you hear the voice of the horns of Oromë and the hate of Morgoth, when neither Oromë nor Morgoth were present.

Assuming this is correct, I'm giving this one to hope; I was on vacation, then looking in the wrong place for wolves.

In that moment Huan leaped from the thicket upon the back of the Wolf, and they fell together fighting bitterly; and no battle of wolf and hound has been like to it, for in the baying of Huan was heard the voice of the horns of Oromë and the wrath of the Valar, but in the howls of Carcharoth was the hate of Morgoth and malice crueler [Tolkien spells it "crueller", causing me to ponder on crullers filled with malice...but I digress!] than teeth of steel; and the rocks were rent by their clamour and fell from on high and choked the falls of Esgalduin.

The Silmarillion, Quenta Silmarillion, Chapter XIX, Of Beren and Luthien

'Tis yours if correct, Ms. hope.

It certainly is. Well done Grim. A holiday bell (Tolkien might spell it holliday like the Doc) to you Grim. Have a good time.

And over to you Hope for the next question. (I wouldn't want to meet a vampire ent on a dark night. :))

I believe, Grim, that vampire ents love to eat malice crullers and apple fretters. :p

Thanks for the question, both of you.

*scampers from Pern to the closet where the books are boxed* I'll have one up for you in a bit here.

Hmm, calendars in appendix vs. birthday party comments...

*rummages thru the various works, muttering absent-mindedly...then has a thought*

Er, you're not actually referring to YOUR birthday, right?o_O

I thought along the same lines, Grim, and that Hope's birthday way just before midsummer, so with 2 lithes and midsummer and an overlithe (on leap years) she just couldn't get the caterers.
But it doesn't really work, and anyway your birthday is in April, Hope, according to your profile.

Is it a play on your name? Hope = Estel ?

My birthday, as listed on my profile.
On the right track there Grim.

Not a pun on my name this time Far.

I can see a case for your party being 4 days before your birthday, where "in the west Farthing, especially in the country around Hobbiton Hill, there grew up a custom of making holiday and dancing in the party field, when weather permitted, on April 6." (Appendix D last paragraph.)
But not 4 days after.

I'm equally confused on this (hence the long gap between replies). The Golden Tree did flower first on that day later in the same paragraph cited by far, but it was still on April 6th, not April 14th. And I looked at all of those calendar corrections, trying to find one that would explain the missing 4 days, but none of them seem to apply to that early part of April....

*stews in his ignorance*

You've set us a good 'un, hope.

I cant think of a clue that doesnt say too much.

I could come up with something less stumpy if you like, I just got a new copy of LotR (all three books in one with two forwards) and have been enjoying rereading it. There were a few times I came across something and thought, "oh that would make a good question."

I think it's a case of over thinking so I'll give.

Appendix D
Shire Calendar
for use in all years
... (4) Astron, the 10th falls on a Monday (every year began on the first day of the week, Saturday, and ended on the last day of the week, Friday.) so the party must wait for the following weekend, four days after.

Better question:
who was at the council of Elrond?

Still not seeing it, but will happily make attempt at the replacement question instead. :D

Frodo and Bilbo followed the wizard quickly along the winding path back to the house; behind them, uninvited and for the moment forgotten, trotted Sam.

Gandalf led them...

Elrond was there, and several others were seated in silence about him. Frodo saw Glorfindel and Gloin; and in a corner alone Strider was sitting.

There was a younger dwarf at Gloin's side: his son Gimli. Beside Glorfindel there were several other counselors of Elrond's household, of whom Erestor was the chief; and with him Galdor....

There was a strange Elf clad in green and brown, Legolas....

"Here", said Elrond, turning to Gandalf, "is Boromir..."

The Lord of the Rings, The Fellowship of the Ring, Book Two, Chapter II, The Council of Elrond

As far as I can see, you've got them all, Grim.

As for the party question, it's clear that, in the Shire the 10th of April, or at least of Astron, is always a Monday.
The piece of information that was missing for me though, Hope, is that you always have your parties on the following Friday. Whilst a perfectly reasonable practice, it's not one that I necessarily follow. :)

A summonsing bell to Grim, and I'll sit quietly in the back for a bit. :p
Sorry about the confusion on the first question.
