The Revived Tolkien Trivia

I cannot find my copy of the trilogy... but, initial reactions to hunters are treasure hunters and rangers. Treasure hunters means dwarves. Rangers means Dunedain.... but it could be the three hunters of the Two Towers visiting their old friends during the Fourth Age. Those are my thoughts. Someone with a book will need to make a more accurate guess.

Rangers of the North?
Lonely men are we, Rangers of the wild, hunters--but hunters ever of the servants of the Enemy; for they are found in many places, not in Mordor only.

Sorry, Py -- it's specifically the Shire.

ETA: to help a little (perhaps), when I say "which hunters", it's really not at all specific.

Ents hunting for the Entwives?

(Treebeard) made them describe the Shire and its country over and over again. He said an odd thing at this point. 'You never see any, hm, any Ents round there do you?' he asked. 'Well, not Ents, Entwives I should really say.'
'Entwives?' said Pippin. 'Are they like you at all?'
'Yes, hm, well no: I do not really know now,' said Treebeard thoughtfully. 'But they would like your country, so I just wondered.'

TT, Book 3, Chapter 4, Treebeard

Good call Pyan (I actually thought you'd nailed it with the Rangers quote), but I think it may be in search of Bilbo's/Frodo's mithril shirt.

"If it were known that Hobbits had such hides, all the hunters of Middle-Earth would be riding to the Shire." Fellowship, Lothlorien

Drat! Pretty sure you've got it there, PM...(y)

I was also chasing King Argaleb II, and the royal hunting grounds of Arthedain, given over to Marcho and Blanco to found the Shire: but I'm damned if I can find a quote in the allowed books that confirms that it was a hunting preserve of the North-kings.

Thanks guys. This is my first, so hope it's not too obscure (or indeed too easy)

Which character could hit a bullseye?

Just the passage proving it please.

In the version of The Lord of the Rings that exists in my head, this is a reference to Sam's Uncle Andy, and it comes when Sam is throwing stones at Shelob. However, it seems that for some foolish reason, Tolkien went with a different version.

Sam Gamgee? As they're leaving Bree,
Sam turned quickly. 'And you. Ferny,' he said, 'put your ugly face out of sight, or it will get hurt.' With a sudden flick, quick as lightning, an apple left his hand and hit Bill square on the nose. He ducked too late, and curses came from behind the hedge. 'Waste of a good apple,' said Sam regretfully, and strode on.

I had (and discarded) the same reference, Py. One of my absolute favorite passages in the Trilogy, too. Still looking...

From The Hobbit:

Bilbo was a pretty fair shot with a stone... As a boy he used to practise throwing stones at things, until rabbits.... got out of his way as quick as lightening if they saw him stoop; and even grownup he had still spent a deal of his time at quoits, dart throwing, shooting at the wand, bowls, ninepins, and other quiet games of the aiming and throwing sort...

Yes, you have it, well done!

Thanks, PM. Okay...

I was an orphan.
I was seemingly chosen by supernatural powers of Arda for a mission.
I was given a special blade.
I was given a special chainmail shirt.
I had a guide to lead me by hidden paths and a tunnel.
While on my quest, my path diverged from my cousin's.
I watched in horror as my companion battled an ancient evil and fell to his doom.
The great Eagles are mentioned in my story.
After the quest, I served in government.
My heir was highly praised.
Finally, I sailed west.
The tradition is that I arrived in Valinor.
Who are we?

(I like quotes, but I'd have to summon half of The Silmarillion to settle this one!)

Tuor was an orphan (Huor died in Niernaeth Arnoediad, Rian died of grief on Haudh-en-Ndengin)
Tuor was chosen by Ulmo to bring word to Turgon of Gondolin's doom
Tuor was given (by Ulmo's guidance) a blade of the house of Turgon
Tuor was given a special chainmail shirt of the house of Turgon
Tuor was guided by Voronwe (sent by Ulmo) on hidden paths and to the hidden door of Gondolin and the tunnel that lay beyond
While on his quest, Tuor's path almost crossed his cousin's, Turin Turambar, but "...he passed them by and they said no word."
Tuor and Idril watched as Glorfindel their guide battled the Balrog and fell with it into the abyss under Cirith Thoronath
Thorondor and the Eagles arrived in time to drive back the orcs after Glorfindel's fall, saving Tuor, Idril and their companions
Tuor led the remnant of Gondolin after Glorfindel's fall to the mouths of the Sirion (I guess that's governing?)
Tuor's heir was Earendil, slayer of Ancalagon the Black and bearer of the only visible Silmaril, and is highly praised (and was also highly raised, if you will ;-) ).
Tuor and Idril sailed west
In after days it was sung that Tuor alone of mortal men was numbered among the elder race

I'd have to summon half of The Silmarillion to settle this one!
Which is what I was doing Grim, or I'd have beaten you.

Nah! I was still at the half of it's Bilbo and the other half Sam stage. Which is what Boaz was tempting us with. :)
Good one.
