The Revived Tolkien Trivia

Named with the family name and dogged by his brother's lost possession, one of his son's possessions lent an air to one of his rival's great grandsons.
No quote needed, just name the guy. But if you want to explain the various connections and clues, then I'd give a Bel bell.

No takers? I’ll give a Bel bell… a Beleriand bell.

Named with the family name and dogged by his brother's lost possession, one of his son's possessions lent an air to one of his rival's great grandsons. Here’s another clue to this person’s identity… his name shares an element with one of Saruman’s aliases.

Hmmm.
Just summing up my thoughts, for I am of 2 minds.
It was clear from the start that it was either Curufin, or his father Curufinwe, also known as Feanor.
But then the clues.
The Saraman reference is to Curunir which works for both of them; Curu being skill or cunning, as in Skill of Finwe or the cunning mind(Curunir).
The dogged by one of his brother's lost possessions doesn't work for Feanor, presumably refering to the Silmarils. But it would work for either of his brothers Fingolfin or Finarfin. I suppose both of them start with Fin which could be the "Named with the family name" just as much as Curufin but then doesn't fit the Saruman bit.

His rival's great grandson in presumably Earendil, which points to great granddaddy Fingolfin. Which then points back to Feanor. Aaaarrggh.
On the other hand Earendil's other great granddaddy was Thingol, who doesn't really fit the rivalry bit.

Or we move to Curufin whose son was Celebrimbor, creator of the rings and maybe then the great grandson is Elrond (who had one of the rings),or Elros.
Curufin had a bunch of brothers but I'm a bit lost with the lost possession bit, here. But I'm definitely tending towards this answer.
Main character Curufin
Brother probably Maedros, but I'm not at all certain what the lost possession is
His son Celebrimbor and his possessions the rings
Giving an air to Elrond, Great grandson of Turgon?
I'm not at all happy.

So! More research required.

Ah. So we could say the rival of Curufin is Beren, who leapt upon him when Curufin tried to kidnap Luthien.
Then Beren sprang from before Celegorm full upon the speeding horse of Curufin that had passed him; and the Leap of Beren is renowned among Men and Elves. He took Curufin by the throat from behind, and hurled him backward, and they fell to the ground together. The horse reared and fell, but Lúthien was flung aside, and lay upon the grass.

So. Still Elrond is the great grandson of the rival (Beren), and Celebrimbor is the son whose possession (the ring) lent an air to him. (I’m sure there’s a specific quotation about the ring giving Elrond an “Air”, but I’m not sure where.)
Wait. It's the name of the ring that Elrond kept. Vilya, the Ring of Air. Very nice, @Boaz .:)

I've been waiting for Boaz's confirmation of my guess, but he doesn't seem to want to reply, so I ask something anyway to keep the thread going.
I've just had a van go past, with a load speaker announcing that a travelling circus is coming to town next week.
(Why do they always make these announcements, in French or English, with poorly faked Italian accents? That's not the question.)
The question is
Who seemed to expect something similar in MiddleEarth.

PS. Boaz hasn't made any entry at all since May 24. I've sent a message to check if he's ok. Has anyne heard anything?

No way! I posted a response to this three weeks ago. I was at Starbucks… I must’ve lost connection. My apologies to everyone.

@HareBrain Well done for encouragement. I award you a Richard Simmons' Bell.

@farntfar Curufin is the answer! He was named Curufinwe after his father Curufinwe (Feanor) who had been named for Finwe. Curufin and Celegorm became rivals with Beren for Luthien. Huan is Celegorm's lost possession, and instead of dogged... perhaps I should have said it hounded them. Beren's son was Dior, Beren's granddaughter was Elwing, Beren's grandson was Elrond... who came to posess Celebrimbor's ring, Vilya.... the Ring of Air. You win a Beleriand Bell for spectacular use of knowledge that the rest of the world neither wants nor desires.

I must’ve lost connection. My apologies to everyone.
Thank you Boaz. I'm just glad to know you're ok.
I wouldn't be surprised if even those with magic rings are susceptibles to the vagaries of Starbucks, who, like Bombadil, are probably immune to such things.

Anyway. I've already asked a question.

Who seems to be waiting for the circus to come to town.

PS. Has someone already asked this? If so, I'll find something else.

I think it's Beorn

Gandalf is telling him what has happened on the trip so far, and has told the rest of the party to appear at intervals to avoid annoying Beorn with a sudden influx of dwarves. After Nori and Ori appear:

“As soon as we were asleep,” went on Gandalf, “a crack at the back of the cave opened; goblins came out and grabbed the hobbit and the dwarves and our troop of ponies—”
when Beorn interrupts:
“Troop of ponies? What were you—a travelling circus? Or were you carrying lots of goods? Or do you always call six a troop?”

The Hobbit, ch. 7: Queer Lodgings

Ding, ding, ding...

A nice easy one. Quote, please.

Who were the King under the Mountain and the King in Dale when the King of the West was crowned?

Regarding the circus… I’ve thought it was referring to three rings. As in a three ring circus. I was racking my brain regarding white Council meetings when all three rings might have been present.

I’m serious. The above post was not a joke. I felt really stupid when I saw the answer was Beorn.

I don't doubt it, Boaz. It's the sort of cryptic clue I could quite easily have made. Except this time I didn't think of it. :)
